Miley Cyrus blasts Joe Jonas for claiming she and Demi Lovato forced him to smoke weed

LOS ANGELES | Miley Cyrus fired back at pop star Joe Jonas, formerly of the Jonas Brothers, who said she pop singer Demi Lovato introduced him to marijuana.

“If you want to smoke weed, you’re going to smoke weed. There’s nothing that two little girls are going to get you to do that you don’t want to do,” Cyrus told the New York Times in an interview to be published on Sunday and made available early online.

She was responding to an earlier New York Times interview given by Jonas, older brother of her ex-boyfriend Nick, who said he was 17 or 18 when his fellow former Disney Channel stars Cyrus and Lovato, who were around 14, when the incident happened.

Cyrus, now 21, has grabbed headlines in the past year for her admitted drug use, sexually suggestive dancing and wearing as little as boots in a music video. She said she was surprised by the scrutiny her new persona has attracted.

To the daughter of country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus it is all about sex, drugs and pop music — and she is fine with it that way now that the provocative singer has shed her innocent Disney star image along with most of her clothes.

“I went from people just thinking I was, like, a baby to people thinking I’m this, like, sex freak that really just pops molly and does lines all day,” Cyrus said in the interview, referring to the drugs MDMA and cocaine, respectively.

“It’s like, ‘Has anyone ever heard of rock ‘n’ roll?’” the “Wrecking Ball” singer countered. “There’s a sex scene in pretty much every single movie, and they go, ‘Well, that’s a character.’ Well, that’s a character. I don’t really dress as a teddy bear and, like, twerk on Robin Thicke, you know?”

Cyrus, who rose to prominence as a teen star of the Disney musical TV series “Hannah Montana,” has become a bad girl of pop music since her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September when she “twerked” (a sexually suggestive dance) during a performance of Thicke’s hit “Blurred Lines.”

“I don’t have a bunch of celeb friends, because I feel like some of them are a little scared of the association,” Cyrus said of her new persona. “This is terrible. I was backstage with (the rising pop star) Ariana Grande. I’m like, ‘Walk out with me right now and get this picture, and this will be the best thing that happens to you, because just you associating with me makes you a little less sweet.’”

Cyrus, whose newest music video “Adore You” shows her writhing between bed sheets in her underwear, sucking her thumb and rubbing her body, said she feels more free to be herself now that she is no longer under a Disney contract.

“When I was no longer employed by anyone, that’s when I was like, ‘O.K., I’m going to do my own thing.’ But I waited until I felt like I had respectfully finished out what I was supposed to do, you know?” she said.

Cyrus signed with label RCA this year after releasing her first three albums on Disney’s Hollywood Records.

‘10,000 Hours’ sweeps MMFF awards; Robin Padilla, Maricel Soriano win top acting honors

Robin Padilla raises his trophy after being hailed Best Actor at the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival awards night on Friday. (Teddy Pelaez/InterAksyon)

Turning down a chance to direct two of the Metro Manila Film Festival’s certified blockbusters in “My Little Bossings” and “Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel”, director Joyce Bernal instead opted to try something different in “10,000 Hours”.

The gambit paid off handsomely as the veteran filmmaker not only won her first Best Director trophy since helming her first film in 1998, her film also swept most of the MMFF awards at ceremonies held at the Meralco theater Friday night.

In her acceptance speech, Direk Joyce remembered to thank former senator and now Yolanda rehabilitation czar Panfilo Lacson for trusting her with his story. “10,000 Hours” is a fictionalized account of the senator’s life on the run after being charged with the Dacer-Corbito double murder case during the Arroyo administration.

The film won a total of 14 awards, including Best Picture, Best Story, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Supporting Actor for Pen Medina and Best Actor for Robin Padilla.

It is Robin’s first Best Actor award since 2006 when he won the FAMAS, Gawad Urian and the Golden Screen awards for his lead role in “La Visa Loca”. In “10,000 Hours”, he plays a senator who went into hiding in Amsterdam after being framed for a murder he didn’t commit by no less than the president of the Philippines.

“10,000 Hours” is also the first time Robin and Direk Joyce worked together on a project after working together four times in the films “Tunay na Tunay: Gets Mo, Gets Ko”, “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw”, “Buhay Kamao” and “Pagdating ng Panahon” from the year 2000 to 2001.

“I’ve read both the scripts of ‘Kimmy Dora’ and ‘My Little Bossings’. Dito lang talaga ako sa ‘10,000 Hours’ na-challenge, na para ma-iba lang talaga. Medyo naging mahirap ang desisyon kasi kaibigan ko so Kris Aquino and then company namin ang nag-produce ng ‘Kimmy Dora’ pero eto talaga ang gusto ko at nabiyayaan naman,” Direk Joyce told InterAksyon in a post-awards interview.

While the night clearly belonged to “10,000 Hours”, top grosser “My Little Bossings” bagged four awards namely 3rd Best Picture, Best Theme Song, Best Child Performer for Ryzza Mae Dizon and Best Supporting Actress for Aiza Seguerra.

“Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” won three awards: 2nd Best Picture, Best Actress for Maricel Soriano and Most Gender-Sensitive Film. The multi-awarded Diamond Star last won the MMFF Best Actress trophy in 2011 for Jun Lana’s “Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”. She was not around to accept her award, though.

“Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay” won Best Make-Up and the Youth Choice Award as selected by the National Youth Commission.

Other than the Best Festival Float honors, “Boy Golden Shoot to Kill: The Arturo Porcuna Story” failed to win any major and technical award. The film had received favorable reviews from critics and had been considered a strong contender for the top honors.

Films that failed to win a single award were “Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel”, “Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir” and “Kaleidoscope World”.

Just like last year, the awards night was hosted by Kris Aquino and KC Concepcion. Kris happily announced that according to Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Francis Tolentino, the opening day gross of this year’s film festival is 12 percent higher compared to last year’s opening day receipts.

New Year, New Life

Everyone starts fresh come the New Year. We vow to do something new, get thinner or give more. In reality, it is simply the next day on the calendar, but the notion nevertheless gives people hope to change for better.

During the pocket press conference for the upcoming drama series on GMA-7, “The Borrowed Wife,” Bulletin Entertainment asked some of the cast members to share their New Year’s resolution or at least what they wanted to change in 2014.

Camille Prats, who described New Year as a symbol of new beginning, said, “I pray for prosperity and just happiness throughout the year… (And) siguro to start eating healthy, which is nagawa ko naman last year. So next year goal ko is to continue… be consistent about it…”

Rafael Rosell revealed that 2014 for him is “the continuation of journeys” that he started in 2013.

“If you want to start something, start it now… Maybe I’ll get a new walk, new smile or new attitude. I don’t know… keep more in touch with my family, with friends and just continue life,” he said.

TJ Trinidad, who doesn’t have New Year’s resolution, just hopes that he can do more films in 2014.

“Like what I did in ‘Mga Anino Ng Kahapon’ (a film entry to New Wave full-length category in Metro Manila Film Festival 2013) and ‘Sana Dati’ (Cinemalaya 2013)… (And) personally, just good health to my family, especially my wife and kids…”

Luckily for these celebrities, their “new life” this new year comes with a new TV series as well. “The Borrowed Wife” is a story about love and obsession, and how infidelity changes people’s lives and affects those they hold dear.

The series also stars Pauleen Luna, Kevin Santos, Caridad Sanchez, Yayo Aguila and Sherilyn Reyes, among others, and will start airing in January.

Angeli Bayani wants more support for film industry

Angeli Bayani (Photo by Marjorie Duran)

Angeli Bayani (Photo by Marjorie Duran)

Fast-rising actress Angeli Bayani, who was nominated as Best Actress at the recently concluded 2013 Asia Pacific Filmfest (the honor went to Zang Ziyi) laments the local cinema’s “severe” lack of support from the powers that be.

Bayani insists that the country could claim a larger piece of the international market if only the industry movers and shakers would stop caring too much about “what happens on the home front,” like “how much they will earn (for a given project) or how famous it will make them.”

She insists, “They seemingly don’t realize that we have serious talent here and it is so sad when a country fails to acknowledge and support its own art & culture; and I’m not just talking about film.”

Adding to this, she opines, “A lot of people care about ratings and box office sales, which of course doesn’t hurt, but it should not be the ultimate goal. It is possible to have a good story and good sales. Why not do both?”

For Bayani, quality film means “one with a good story.”

She notes, “People should remember that without a good story, a film won’t have a leg to stand on. You can put an all-star cast in there and hire a hotshot director but without a good story, it will simply be a waste of time and effort.”

The success of “Ilo Ilo” has shone a bit of international spotlight on Bayani but she would definitely welcome local projects.

“Work is work no matter where you get it,” she says, adding that the important thing “is to have a venue to practice your craft.”

She admits, however, that she is more inclined to accept international film offers.

“I do love working with an international crew because there is so much to be learned from working with different cultures. It’s very good to get out of your comfort zone once in a while. You see things differently. You see yourself differently,” she explains.

Asked to differentiate between local and international productions, Bayani shared:

“First thing, definitely, is their working hours. They stick to a 12-hour working schedule, which is great because, for the cast to the crew, you have time to rest and prepare for the next day. Time is also allotted for research, for immersion, for rehearsals.

“And everything moves like a well-oiled machine. Another thing is, everyone is equal. No one is given special treatment, the atmosphere is collaborative and open. Everyone and anyone can contribute. And no one is in a hurry to run off to some other taping or shoot.”

Bayani likewise refuses the “celebrity” tag, going on to insist that she never aimed for fame. She simply wants to be a working actress.

“If you think that I am in a position where I can claim such a thing (celebrity status), I can only credit it to my body of work and the work ethic that has been passed on to me by my mentors including Irma Adlawan, Ana Valdes-Lim, Dennis Marasigan, Jay Cruz, Filomar Tariao,

Agnes Barredo and last but definitely not least, Herbie Go… I would never have gotten to where I am now were it not for them.”

Is money now an option when accepting roles?

“I hate talking about money,” she retorts. “It’s the last thing that concerns me when offered a project. It’s just a bonus to be paid for doing what I love best. What I do ask about is the story, the role, sometimes I ask about the people I’ll be working with, but that doesn’t really matter to me especially if the story is good.”
