Leave it to Ai Ai delas Alas to catapult an actor’s name to immediate stardom just by mere comment. With her naughty yet funny comment on how “big” his leading man is, Edward Mendez is now a popular name in local showbiz.
“Napaka-gifted ng batang ito. Lahat ng bakla doon fiesta,” Ai Ai said, adding that even her “Kung Fu Divas” co-star and co-producer Marian Rivera noticed the same.
Edward finds Ai Ai’s remark funny and even thanks her for it.
“Naka-work ko na siya before sa ‘Pinay Pie’ 10 years ago so merong familiarity. Pero dito sa ‘Kung-Fu Divas,’ mas longer ang exposure namin. We got to know each other more so grabe lang, laging nakatawa sa set,” he said.
“Big” aptly describes Edward. He stands 6’1 and is ripped as seen in “King-Fu Divas.” He is also big in passion for everything he does including acting. He is big in humility and a big-hearted person.
Before joining showbiz, Edward was keen on pursuing his dream of becoming a successful author. He already penned a health book titled “Your Dream Body Come True.” It is his way of sharing to people his knowledge on fitness and a healthy lifestyle. His body, from years of working out, plus studying Sports Science in the US are his arsenals in helming his book and his book’s website.
In showbiz, Edward has appeared on a number of TV shows like “Magkaribal,” “Alyna,” “Hiyas” and “Please Be Careful With My Heart” among others, and in movies like “One More Try,” “This Guy’s In Love With You Mare.”
And even if he’s under the management of a renowned talent builder Joji Dingcong, he doesn’t have qualms auditioning for roles.
“I auditioned for my role in ‘Kung-Fu Divas.’ Sabi kasi ni direk that time na maraming pinapa-audition. Mahirap daw kasing mag pick ng actor na malapit sa or mag match sa Kojic niya. Fortunately nagampanan ko yung pinagagawa niya sa akin sa audition. Basically I think nakuha ko yung interest niya ng pinahubad niya ako for the first time. Character ko kasi walang garment,” Edward shared.
“Kung Fu Divas” director Onat Diaz said they started looking for an actor to play Kojic in September 2012.
“Si Edward po ang produkto ng isang mahabang search for the role of Kojic. Matagal kaming naghahanap na kami ng actor ng gaganap kay Kojic. December sya dumating and sobrang blessing siya,” commented Onat.
As for Edward, “Kung-Fu Divas” is an interesting twist in his acting career.
“This was unexpected. Sobrang excited and blessed. I’m grateful na nakuha ako. Biggest break ko ito.”
Produced by Star Cinema, Reality Entertainment and The O&Co Picture Company, also in “Kung-Fu Divas” are Roderick Paulate, Gloria Diaz, Nova Villa, Roy Alvarez, Precious Lara Quigamann and Bianca Manalo. The movie opens nationwide today, Oct. 2.
