Bill Cosby unlikely to face charges over sex abuse claims

Bill Cosby. (AFP)

WASHINGTON, D.C. | In recent weeks, about 20 women have come forward to accuse veteran comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault and even rape.

But with most of the alleged attacks now more than 10 years in the past, the 77-year-old Emmy and Golden Globe winner — who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing — is unlikely to face criminal charges due to statutes of limitations.

The legendary star of “The Cosby Show” and “I Spy” was the subject of a civil suit brought in 2005 by 15 women, 13 of whom remained anonymous. A settlement was reached in 2006 with one of the plaintiffs.

The following is a look at the allegations against Cosby, and the legal parameters surrounding them:

Different US states, different laws

The allegations against Cosby date back to the 1960s, and the encounters took place in several US states including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and California.

In America, laws vary from state to state in terms of the gravity of the crime, the burden of proof, the length of the statutes of limitations and the possible punishments.

An act of rape “by forcible compulsion” in New York can be considered to be an “illegal sexual relationship” in California, and thus the punishment is less severe.

Too late for criminal charges?

Most of the allegations go back to the 1970s and 1980s. In the states involved, the statutes of limitations bar charges from being brought, except in Pennsylvania, where an alleged victim has 12 years to file a criminal complaint.

In the East Coast state, Andrea Constand, former director of operations of the women’s basketball team at Temple University, has accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2004.

A year later, prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges against Cosby, citing lack of evidence. Constand then filed a civil complaint accusing Cosby of battery and assault.

No chance for civil suits

With respect to possible civil suits against Cosby, the statutes of limitations have expired everywhere.

However in late 2006, the comic reached an out-of-court settlement with Constand, the terms of which were never disclosed.

Constand had asked for $150,000 in damages plus interest, arguing that Cosby’s alleged behavior had caused her to “suffer severe emotional distress, humiliation, embarrassment and financial loss.”

If Cosby made any admission in that civil case, that could work against him, attorney Stuart Slotnick told AFP.

But as this case involves a public figure, it is more likely that Cosby simply paid the money to avoid publicity.

In that event, the only thing prosecutors could use is that “he paid money to make a case go away, but that’s not evidence he did it.”

High burden of proof

On the criminal side, no matter what the state, “the legal standard to prove the crime is actually the same everywhere, and that’s ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ and that’s a very high standard,” said Slotnick.

That is why the then district attorney in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County, Bruce Castor, chose not to charge Cosby in 2005.

“I didn’t say that he didn’t commit the crime,” Castor told NBC Philadelphia.

“What I said was there was insufficient admissible and reliable evidence upon which to base a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt. That’s ‘prosecutors speak’ for ‘I think he did it, but there’s just not enough here to prosecute.’”

No more physical evidence

“Criminal cases don’t get better with age — they usually get worse,” said Slotnick. It is difficult, if not impossible, to gather physical evidence and testimony 10 or 20 years after the fact.

Even for the most recent case concerning Cosby, it is too late to gather any physical evidence that would prove rape or the presence of drugs in the woman’s system.

“You lose the ability to test for blood or intoxicating agents, whether she was drugged,” said Slotnick.

“Years later, the kind of evidence that prosecutors would be able to collect would be the women’s testimony,” the New York-based attorney said.

“That makes it difficult for a jury, especially when a woman comes forward 10 years later, because that automatically raises questions for the jurors: why did they wait? When there’s someone who is a celebrity, there’s always the question: do they seek to profit from the criminal prosecution?”

That is the main argument put forward by lawyers for Cosby. The comedian himself has largely stayed quiet, only saying to a Florida newspaper that “a guy doesn’t have to answer to innuendos.”

‘Mockingjay’ disarms ‘Penguins’ to retain top spot at U.S. box office

Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1'.

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK | “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” the third film in the dystopian action series starring Jennifer Lawrence, collected $56.9 million to hold off advances by animated films “Penguins of Madagascar” and “Big Hero 6″ and claim victory at the U.S. holiday weekend box office.

“Penguins of Madagascar,” the fourth in the series of “Madagascar” films, waddled into second place on its opening weekend with $25.8 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters for the three days ending on Sunday, according to tracking firm Rentrak.

Walt Disney’s “Big Hero 6,” the box office champion three weeks ago, was third with $18.8 million in ticket sales. The film has generated $167 million since its Nov. 7 release.

“Mockingjay,” which stars Lawrence as young archer Katniss Everdeen who leads a rebellion, recorded $82.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving Day weekend and has generated more than $225 million since opening on Nov. 21, according to Rentrak.

The film, which scored the third-highest total ever for a five-day Thanksgiving weekend, has raked in $254 million outside the United States and Canada, for a global take of $480 million.

“Penguins” added another $36 million from overseas box offices for a global total of $72 million, according to distributor 20th Century Fox. The family film saw 58 percent of its audience under age 25 amid what the studio called a soft Thanksgiving marketplace overall.

The Thanksgiving box office haul of $230 million for Wednesday through Sunday fell far short of the record-setting figures a year ago, when moviegoers flocked to theaters for films including the second “Hunger Games” installment, spending $293.7 million on all releases combined.

Rounding out the weekend’s top five, director Christopher Nolan’s space adventure Interstellar starring Matthew McConaughey took in $15.8 million boosted by premium-priced IMAX screenings, while the new Jason Bateman-Jennifer Aniston film “Horrible Bosses 2″ was fifth with $15.7 million.

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ was distributed by Lionsgate. 20th Century Fox, the unit of 21st Century Fox, released the Dreamworks production “Penguins of Madagascar.” Warner Brothers, a unit of Time Warner, distributed “Horrible Bosses 2.” “Interstellar” was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom.

Jose Manalo gives Eugene Domingo token of friendship

Eugene Domingo and Jose Manalo

Eugene Domingo and Jose Manalo

Awarded actress Eugene Domingo got a “diamond” ring from “Celebrity Bluff” co-host Jose Manalo on their second anniversary episode but they maintain it’s merely a friendship band.

Jose said the ring symbolizes their closeness since they’ve been working together for some time now.

“Kasi ’yung friendship namin ay malalim na. Alam mo ’yung masaya ka kasi may kaibigan ka,” he said.

The comedian added in jest: “Hindi naman kamahalan ’yung singsing kasi may crack na (’yon). Mahal kasi ’yung buo kaya ’yung may tabas na (’yung binigay ko).”

The tandem of Jose and Eugene (“JoGe” to fans) has a large following on social media, especially among viewers of the show. Eugene is grateful for the support and admits to admiring Jose “kasi mahirap magpatawa.”

“It takes a witty person to do that,” she pointed out.

The actress joked she initially thought it would be impossible for her and Jose to establish a connection since she’s used to being partnered with a certain type of leading man.

“Kasi naman noon, kung kani-kanino ako nali-link na talagang mga guwapo, ’di ba? Pero ngayon siguro, tanggap na nila na pinartner ako sa hindi masyadong guwapo,” she said, laughing.

Awed by Uge

Jose admitted feeling “intimidated” around Eugene though quickly adding she inspires him to become a better actor.

“Natatakot ako gumawa ng movie with Uge… magaling eh. Kasi kapag bumira siya, kailangan ready ka,” he said.

The “Eat Bulaga!” mainstay shared that aside from helping him in hosting and doing comedy, Eugene makes the work easier and fun by always cracking jokes on set.

“Iba ang atake niya sa pagho-host eh, kasi alam mong nandu’n pa rin ’yung comedy,” Jose lauded.

Jose believes he still has a lot to learn in comedy.

“Sa comedy kasi hindi pwedeng sugod ka lang ng sugod. Dapat pakiramdaman mo din ’yung mga katrabaho mo… ”

On Ai Ai

Eugene agrees Ai Ai delas Alas deserves to take some time off for much-needed R&R.

Recall that the Comedy Queen said in a prior interview that she’s actually looking forward to taking a break. A few days back on “The Buzz,” Ai Ai even revealed plans of migrating to the US in time.

“She has done a lot and I think ’yung responsibility niya as a mother ay nagawa niya na rin,” Eugene said.

She believes, though, that Ai Ai will not leave show business. “Siguro sa ngayon magpapahinga lang siya… ’di naman siya mawawala,” Eugene said.

Indie projects

Eugene wants to do more independent films in the vein of “Barber’s Tales (Mga Kwentong Barbero)” and “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank (The Woman In The Septic Tank).”

“Wala (pa) akong balak na gumawa ng malaking pelikula kasi mahirap makipag-kompitensiya. Marami kasi ngayong films na maganda,” she said.

She prefers doing sitcoms because “ayoko ng madrama, gusto ko happy lang.” She also wants to hone her hosting skills even more.

Celebrating Christmas

Eugene and Jose hope to spend more time with their respective families during the holidays. For that, they need to tape their show in advance, especially since “Celebrity Bluff” will have more seasons in 2015.

“Approved na (ang extension ng show) kasi maraming nanunuod sa amin. Mula sa mga lolo at lola hanggang sa mga apo ay nai-entertain,” she said.

She also credited the success of the show to Boobay and Isko Salvador, saying, “Maganda talaga ’yung combination naming apat (dahil) iba’t-iba ’yung mga abilidad namin.”

GMA-7’s “Celebrity Bluff” airs every Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

Alden still friends with Aljur

Alden Richards

Alden Richards

Alden Richards has three words on reports that Aljur Abrenica is supposedly mulling a return to GMA-7: “Good for him.”

For the nth time, Alden reiterated he and Aljur remain friends. They greet each other within GMA premises though they don’t see the need to talk about the issue of alleged rivalry between them, Alden said.

Aljur filed his petition for rescission of contract with GMA-7 when the two were about to start work on the series “Cain at Abel.”

The GMA Artist Center (GMAAC) talent surmises GMA-7 would welcome Aljur back if the latter decides to return. The former thinks Aljur was just “confused that time.”

Alden said, “Sino (pa) ba naman ang babalikan mo kung hindi ‘yung magulang (referring to GMA-7) na nagpalaki sa ‘yo?”

Alden in Hanoi

Alden recently attended the Hanoi International Film Festival to represent the indie film “Kinabukasan” co-starring Nora Aunor and Rosanna Roces.

“Kinabukasan” was an entry under the short film category. It was Alden’s first time to attend an international film event.

“I was able to meet the stars and directors from different countries at paniguradong isa ito sa highlights ng aking career bilang isang aktor. The experience inspires me to do more and be the best that I can be,” Alden was quoted in a release.

The film, directed by Adolf Alix, Jr., is a story “about reconciliation, forgiveness, and accomplishing unfinished business.”

Alden found working with the Superstar quite overwhelming. He said she is the epitome of perfect acting and that she works from the heart.

“Sobrang nag-enjoy talaga ako na nakatrabaho ko siya at mas lalong nadagdagan ang self-confidence ko (because of that),” he said.

‘Bet ng Bayan’ finalists

Alden and singer Regine Velasquez host reality-talent search “Bet ng Bayan” and at the press conference Thursday, they were with the show’s semi-finalists, namely singers Veronica Atienza and Apple Delleva; dance groups Names Going Wild and A’s Crew; and magician Adrian Adriano and stunt performers Techno Jazz.

The actor said he is enjoying work on the show and that it strengthened his belief that Pinoy talents abound even outside Manila. He looks forward to the grand finals to be held within the month.

Bianca the busydody

Bianca King

Bianca King

Heavy workload hasn’t stopped actress Bianca King from making time to start two businesses: a restaurant and a yoga studio.

The yoga studio, which offers hot yoga classes, anti-gravity and Zumba, opened last month at Rockwell. The restaurant, located along Tomas Morato, commences business soon.

“Matagal kong pinagisipan kung saan pwedeng ilagay ‘yung pinagipunan ko sa showbiz,” said Bianca, who took a short course at the Center for Culinary Arts (CCA).

Her venture into the food business was prompted by good friend, Xander Angeles. They wanted a restaurant that caters to health-conscious people “kasi there is lack of those in Quezon City kaya naisipan namin.”

Aside from acting and hosting, cooking has always been one of Bianca’s passions and she is excited to put her talent to good use.

“Nag-try akong mag-apprentice sa directing dati pero wala eh. Nasa puso ko talaga ang cooking,” she said.

Bread and butter

“Sa totoo lang, hindi ko na alam paano i-juggle ‘yang mga commitments ko. Pero I’m very happy kasi maraming work… blessing ‘yan,” said Bianca.

She enjoys being an actress but knowing how an acting career could be fleeting, she embarked on becoming an entrepreneur as well.

“Kaya din naman ako nagsisipag kasi kailangan ko ding kumita nang malaki to pursue my other dreams ,” she said.

She clarified, however, that acting is her “number one priority,” her “bread and butter” so she is unlikely to give it up in favor of her other endeavors.

Single and freelance

Bianca and her non-showbiz boyfriend of a few years have no marriage plans yet.

“Bilang babae kasi, hindi mo alam kung kelan ka magpapakasal, kung kelan ka niya tatanungin. Pero kung ibibigay na ni Lord, tatanggapin ko naman,” she said.

After her GMA Network contract expired last year, Bianca remains a freelancer.

“Nage-enjoy pa kasi ako na parang ‘di ako nakatali sa isang network lang. Sa ngayon kung sino ang may offer at maganda ay pwede kong tanggapin,” she said.

Bianca will be seen on TV5’s “Wattpad Presents His Secretary,” wherein she plays a girl bent on supporting her family even if it means taking on odd jobs. It’s a role she has never done before and that’s the allure and challenge for her.

“Comical love story kasi eto and this is my first full length comedic role on primetime TV,” she said, adding, “Pressured ako kasi maganda ang feedback sa mga Wattpad stories.”

Co-starring John James Uy, “Wattpad Presents His Secretary” airs today at 9:30 p.m.

By her grace: Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman

Film biographies have and will always be subjected to criticisms, particularly in terms of historical accuracy. Some newly released Oscar buzz-worthy and much talked-about biopics like “The Imitation Game” (on English mathematician and logician Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and “The Theory of Everything” (on physicist Stephen Hawking, played by Eddie Redmayne) also raised some eyebrows in this regard.

“Grace of Monaco,” starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly, also had its share of critics, notably Kelly’s own children, Prince Albert II of Monaco and his sisters, Princesses Carlorine and Stéphanie. This pushed both Kidman, to say in a 2012 interview that the film is more of a character study; and director Olivier Dahan, in 2013, to insist that he did not make a biopic, instead, “a human portrait of a modern woman…”

“Grace of Monaco” premiered in Cannes in March this year. Kidman says it covers only a specific point in Kelly’s life, “six years into her marriage, with two children.”

Kelly, of course, was a Hollywood actress before giving it up at age 26 and marrying Prince Rainier in 1956, becoming known as Princess of Monaco since. As an actress herself, Kidman has empathy for what the princess could have gone through at the point in her life depicted in the movie.

“Inevitably if you’re a creative person and if you have a passion, which Grace did, there’s a pull to what you used to do,” Kidman says. “The reality of walking away from it is very different to the idea of it. Then (director Alfred) Hitchcock offered her the role of Marnie and she is more than tempted to return to Hollywood.”

However, Kidman – also a mother –understands walking away from the limelight. “I think she chose love. Many people do that in their lives. She was a major American movie star; at a very early age she won an Academy Award and she then said: ‘I’m actually going to leave it all because I want a marriage, I want a family.’ And I think that that’s a very strong thrust for many people – not just women.”

Kidman notes that when faced with the same dilemma, “there’s no question what I would choose.” However, she may still feel the pull of acting given that she feels it’s in her blood. “It’s just some sort of creative desire to express myself and I would need that – otherwise I would be a nightmare to live with,” she says laughing.

Noting her sadness at not getting the support or the approval of the Royal Family of Monaco, Kidman says, “I don’t think that this movie does harm to anybody. If they had seen it, they would have remarked that ‘Grace of Monaco’ has been filmed with a lot of affection and respect for Grace Kelly.”

Playing a real person, an actress at that, Kidman gets a firsthand experience of how tricky it can be. Although she finds similarities in their lives, she points out, “I obviously did not marry a prince.” She pauses but quickly adds with a laugh, “Ah well, probably I’m married to a prince – a country prince!” Indeed, Keith Urban is a prince to her, an “American Idol” to many others.

The movie does not skirt depicting glamour, something Kidman knows a thing or two about. She is, after all, a perennial red carpet stunner. The production had access to clothes from the House of Dior and jewelry from Cartier, making the set virtually a fashionista haven! Asked if she took anything, Kidman jokes, “I kept the $5 million necklace!”

“Grace of Monaco” finally screens in local cinemas nationwide on Dec. 3.

Solenn wants to do more

Solenn Heussaff

Solenn Heussaff

Already one of the industry’s more popular multi-hyphenated stars (an actress, singer, songwriter, TV host, VJ, fashion designer and painter), Solenn Heussaff still wants to do more. On top of her list is writing a Tagalog song and posting it on YouTube.

“Kahit anong kanta okay lang… feeling ko naman hindi masyadong halata (’yung accent) ‘pag kumakanta ng Tagalog,” she said in an interview.

Solenn is still not happy with her Tagalog and continues to study the language.

“Akala ko kasi ’pag nag-stay ako dito nang matagal eh magiging fluent ako. Pero hindi pala. Pero paunti-unti natututo ako,” she said.

She also said she now understands Tagalog films better. “Pero minsan may mga words akong hindi maintindihan,” she said.

‘Wedding can wait’

The French-Filipina beauty didn’t mince words when asked to comment on her brother Erwan’s supposed impending marriage to girlfriend Anne Curtis.

According to Solenn, his brother isn’t ready yet being only 27 years old. “Para sa akin 35 pa ang age na alam mong mature na ang lalaki,” she said.

Solenn stressed, however, that it doesn’t mean she disapproves of Anne, whom she considers one of her closest friends. But, she’d rather that both focus on their respective careers at the moment.

Solenn, for her part, maintained that marriage is not among her priorities.

“Ayoko ngayon. Pero siguro after ko mag 30, pwede na rin,” she said. “Wedding can wait. When it happens, it happens.”

Nonetheless, she said that if her boyfriend of almost four years, Argentinian businessman Nico Bolzico, suddenly pops the question, she wouldn’t know what to do, surmising that she’ll probably shed tears of joy.

“At ’pag nangyari ’yun, secret lang namin,” she laughed.

Solenn is the ambassador of Sun Shop on Wheels, Sun Cellular’s latest effort to make their products more accessible to people.

“Sun is the right choice for me kasi I’m always on the go…For that I always need to be connected,” she said.

The Sun Shop on Wheels is currently making the rounds of Metro Manila. It will proceed to select provinces next year.

Brian Poe out to prove himself in the biz

Brian Poe (Photo by Marjorie S. Duran)

Brian Poe (Photo by Marjorie S. Duran)

Newbie actor Brian Poe beamed with pride in sharing how his mother, Senator Grace Poe-Llamanzares, never fails to support his career despite her heavy work schedule.

Sen. Grace Poe took time out to attend the premiere night of Brian’s first movie, the comedy musical “Filemon Mamon,” held at SM Megamall on Thursday.

“Nakakataba ng puso talaga, malaking karangalan ito para sa akin. Kahit hindi naman ako ‘yung lead role, pumunta at nanood pa rin siya, considering kakatapos lang ng budget season sa Senado (so) sobrang pagod siya,” he told Bulletin Entertainment in an interview.

Brian said the senator is his top critic and fan, who often acts like his manager too in that “’yung mga roles na ino-offer sa’kin, ini-screen niya. Kung hindi okay sa kanya ‘yung role, talagang aayaw siya (at) siyempre, sinusunod ko.”

Although his surname gave him a jumpstart in show business, Brian admits he is still “trying to find my place” in an industry where there are many good actors.

In order to get more projects and win new fans, the 22-year-old Virginia-raised man not only attends acting and singing workshops, but also practices his Tagalog often.

What took him long to enter show business?

“Sabi ng nanay ko, bawal ako mag-showbiz hanggat hindi pa natapos ‘yung pagaaral ko. Pero nung 17 ako, sinabi ko na sa kanya na gusto kong magartista.”

Brian graduated last year at the Ateneo de Manila University with a degree in Political Science.

Looking up to The King

To be the grandson of the late Fernando Poe Jr., the King of Philippine Cinema, is proving itself challenging for Brian.

“Ang taas ng ekspektasyon ng tao sakin, pati ’yung standards nila, dahil lolo ko si FPJ. Kaya kahit small ‘yung role ko, talagang binigay ko lahat ng effort ko,” Brian said.

Like FPJ, Brian wants to be “pang-masa,” pointing out how “lahat ng roles ng lolo ko, siya ang bida. Galing sa mahirap tapos magtatagumpay… kaya siya ang peg ko eh. I have my name because of his hardwork…”

On another relative, Lovi Poe, Brian admitted they rarely see each other but he describes her as “sobrang bait.”

On entering politics

Brian is open to joining politics eventually but only when he is prepared to do so.

“Kailangan pa ako magaral kung papasukin ko ‘yan someday. Hindi kasi pwedeng basta-basta na sasabak ka. Sa ngayon, showbiz career ko muna iniisip ko,” he said.

As early as now, Brian is involved with the charity efforts of her mother.

“Filemon Mamon,” a comedy musical about health and nutrition which was recognized as the Best Advocacy Film by the 62nd Filipino Academy of Movie, Arts and Sciences (Famas) Awards, also stars Jerome Ignacio (lead role), Rayver Cruz, Nanette Inventor, Smokey Manaloto and Giselle Sanchez.

Meryl Streep on motherhood, beauty, aging and love

Los Angeles – “I would like to heal the sick,” Meryl Streep revealed when we asked what magical power she would like to have. “I think we all have healing energy and we can help each other. We can also hurt each other. It’s two sides of the same coin.”

The 65-year-old award-winning actress talked to us at the Waldorf Astoria in New York about love, children, beauty, motherhood and her role in Rob Marshall’s musical fantasy film, “Into The Woods,” where she portrays The Witch.

On aging gracefully and naturally, Meryl said, “Sometimes women get mixed up and they think that if they’re more beautiful, they’ll be more loved. They think that if they look better on the outside, they are more lovable, that gives them meaning in the world. So just like The Witch, she thinks that if she gets this potion and become beautiful, her daughter won’t be ashamed of her anymore. She will stay with her and, of course, it doesn’t have anything to do with how she looks. It has to do with how mean she is and the beauty in her heart.”

Growing up, she revealed, her mother never told her to be careful. “I used to go out in the woods all day with a little gang of kids and she’d say, ‘Come home when you hear the bell’ and not worry,” she narrated. “It was a different time. That has changed. Childhood has really changed in that way.”

As for her own kids, Meryl disclosed, “I remember when my little boy was maybe two or three, a six-year-old boy was taken from a street in Soho, four blocks from where we lived. He was going to meet the bus on his first day of school and his mother watched him in the corner. Seconds later, he was taken and that changed childhood in New York City. That event for everybody I knew who was a parent, really did shift things. People went nuts.

“So with my own kids, I tend to be supervisory in everything I do. I was more the bad cop and more worried. My husband was more laissez faire but I think the film identifies the strains of dread that live in you once you are a parent. Nothing should happen. But things always do and you are hard pressed00 to prevent it.”

In the movie, The Witch was also an overprotective mother. In her life, was there an incident where her children said, “Back off mom,” we asked.

Meryl replied, “You know the feeling of everybody else is allowed to, why can’t I? I don’t care if everybody else is allowed to. I remember saying them to my mother and her saying I don’t care. These things carry on but the mothers often are the task masters, aren’t they?”

So what keeps her grounded and normal, as most of her colleagues described her, we asked.

Meryl replied, “I don’t know if I am normal. I don’t know what normal is. I feel so grateful.

That’s all just for the opportunities. I have friends who have not had these same opportunities.”

As for being called “normal,” she continued, “I don’t even know what normal is. I have four children. Each one is different. Which one is normal? Which one is abnormal? Are they all normal? Or are they all abnormal? And is it my fault or is it their father’s fault?”

As for love, Meryl admitted, “Love is everything to me.”

Jamie Herrell, a self-proclaimed animal rights advocate from Cebu City, was proclaimed Miss Earth 2014 at the grand coronation night of the pageant held Saturday at the UP Theater in Diliman, Quezon City.

The 20-year-old mestiza stunner bested 84 other entrants from all over the planet and became the second Filipina to claim the Miss Earth title after Karla Henry won in 2008.

Loudly cheered by her hometown crowd, Herrell looked confident and regal right from the start. En route to her victory, she also won three special awards: Miss Earth Hannah’s Beach Resort, Miss Hannah’s Beach Resort’s Best in Swimsuit and Sun for Miss Earth Award.

Herrell was particularly impressive during the question and answer portion when she was asked, “If you win tonight’s crown what will you do to reverse global warming?”

Her reply? “Global warming has been known to be a long, overdue issue. I will use my title to inspire others, help our environment, and we start with the kids—the kids are the people of tomorrow.”

Previously a contestant at the Miss Resorts World Manila 2013 pageant, Herrell is also the owner of Mactan Dynamics Dance Company based in her native Cebu.

Completing Herrell’s court are Andrea Neu of USA who was adjudged Miss Earth Air, Maira Alexandra Rodriguez of Venezuela who won Miss Earth Water and Anastasia Trusova of Russia, who was crowned Miss Earth Fire.

Candidates from Brazil, Mongolia, Slovak Republic and Spain comprised the rest of the Top 8 finalists. This field had been whittled down from the Top 16 that also featured the ladies representing Colombia, Egypt, Korea, Mexico, Scotland, Tahiti, Thailand and Zambia.

Considered as one of the Big Four international beauty pageants along with Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss World, Miss Earth was founded in the Philippines in 2001. Since the establishment of the Miss Earth Foundation in 2004, the country has hosted the pageant in 10 of the last 11 years except for 2010 when it was held in Vietnam.

Dating Couple back on top as Mag-Ama, Nerds exit ‘Amazing Race PH’

Phoebe Walker and Matt Edwards.

For all the squabbling that almost led to a breakup at one point, all Matt Edwards and Phoebe Walker needed was their love for each other to win another pit stop on the episode of “The Amazing Race Philippines 2” aired on TV5 on Saturday.

In the 8th leg of the reality competition series that saw the remaining six teams negotiate several challenges in Iloilo, including one that involved zombies in an Intersection task that forced two teams to work together, Team Dating Couple emerged victorious to add another P200,000 from Shell V Power Nitro Plus to the P600,000 they had already earned from three previous pit stop wins.

With only one week to go, Matt and Phoebe are now the odds-on favorite to win the fabulous grand prize that consists of two house and lots from RCD Royal Homes, two Kia Sportage SUVs and a whopping cash prize of P2 million courtesy of PLDT Home Telpad.

Unlike Chef Roch Hernandez of Team Chefs who plans to realize her dream wedding if she and teammate Chef Eji Estillore win, Matt and Phoebe are not even thinking of settling down.

“We’re only 22. A lot of things can happen. In my case, I hope to use the prize money for my family,” Phoebe told InterAksyon in a recent interview.

“Bata pa kami. Maybe in 10 years time,” Matt added.

Of course, the race is far from a done deal and they still have three other formidable teams to contend with as the 8th leg also saw a heartbreaking double elimination for Team Mag-Ama AJ and Jody Saliba and Team Nerds Vincent Yu and Ed Maguan. They were sent home by “TARP 2” host Derek Ramsay after finishing 5th and 6th respectively at the pit stop atop the Injap Tower Heliport in Mandurriao.

In the end, smarts (Nerds) and heart (Mag-Ama) were not enough to carry both teams through the homestretch. But they can still take consolation in the fact that they both won one pit stop each and the P200,000 that came with it.

Teams Nerds and Mag-ama are sent home after the conclusion of the 8th leg on 'The Amazing Race Philippines' Season 2.

As for the Team Magkapatid of Jet and Yna Cruz, their “bridemaids” streak of runner-up pit stop finishes continue as they ended up second for the fourth time in the race. Still taking inspiration from last year’s grand prize winners LJ Moreno and CJ Jaravata who clinched the championship in the final leg, the rich siblings still feel good about their chances.

“Like CJ and LJ, we’re also fans of the show even way back when it started in the US so we’re very familiar with the rules. CJ and LJ were also not the physically strongest team so we thought we might have a chance since we keep finishing second or third,” Jet noted.

For the Team Chefs, landing in the Final Four with only one leg to go brings Roch closer to her ultimate objective. But before she even thinks of proposing to her boyfriend, there’s still the matter of racing ahead of the others.

Of course, not to be taken for granted and possibly the most dangerous team among the remaining tandems are Team Mr. Pogi Kelvin Engles and JP Duray. Behind the leaders in the first five legs, the team dubbed by online fans as “miracle boys” have since finished in the Top 4 from then on.

Asked what they would do with their prize money should they win, both said they would give it to their parents, although Kelvin said he was also considering using some of it as capital for a business he intends to venture in.

Is there one more miracle that awaits the Pogi Boys? Can Team Chefs cook up a storm as the race reaches it climax? Will knowing “The Amazing Series” by heart finally pay off for the Team Magkapatid? Or will the Dating Couple prove that they really have “the best combination of brains and muscle” as Matt had declared?

The only way to find out is to tune in for the finale week of “The Amazing Race Philippines 2”. Powered by Rexona and sponsored by PLDT Home Telpad, Summit Natural Drinking Water, Kia Motors, RCD Royal Homes, Shell, and Resorts World Manila, the series airs on at 9PM Mondays to Saturdays and Highlights airing every Sundays on TV5.

Peter Gabriel, Pussy Riot rally for Hong Kong protesters

Singer Peter Gabriel and Russian punk band Pussy Riot pose with symbolic umbrellas in these pictures projected to a gathering of Hong Kong protesters on Friday.

NEW YORK | Musicians including Peter Gabriel and Pussy Riot are offering support to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters in the form of photographic tributes.

In pictures that started being projected on an outdoor screen in Hong Kong’s Admiralty District on Friday, the musicians each stand with umbrellas, a symbol of the two-month protests calling for free leadership elections in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.

In one image, Peter Gabriel — the Genesis vocalist turned icon of world music — stands under an umbrella with the caption in English and Chinese, “Water gets everywhere — like the will of the people.”

Another shot features a captionless picture of Pussy Riot wearing masks under umbrellas. Members of the all-female Russian punk band were arrested for staging a protest against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s Orthodox cathedral.

New York-based human rights activists helped organize the campaign to show international backing for the protests.

“We want to show the faces of some of the people around the world who so admire what these young people are doing,” said Hunter Heaney, founder of The Voice Project, which supports imprisoned artists and campaigned to free Pussy Riot.

“We wanted to show them that we still stand with them and to help counteract propaganda that they don’t have support out there,” he said in a statement.

Protesters want free elections in 2017 for Hong Kong’s leader, whom Beijing says must be vetted through a loyalist committee.

Lars von Trier worries he can’t make films now he’s sober

Lars von Trier. (Reuters)

COPENHAGEN | Danish director Lars von Trier fears he won’t be able to make more films because he has quit drinking alcohol and no longer uses drugs.

“No creative expression of artistic value has ever been carried out by former alcoholics and drug addicts,” von Trier told the newspaper Politiken.

It was his first interview since Cannes film festival organizers banned him from their event in 2011 after he joked he was a Nazi at a news conference to promote his film “Melancholia”.

The interview was a front page story in Politiken, a Danish broadsheet, and ran to seven pages inside.

Von Trier, who has shocked audiences with sexually graphic films such as “Antichrist” and “Nymphomaniac”, said he will be sober for 90 days as of Sunday and is going to meetings at Alcoholics Anonymous every day.

The filmmaker was quoted by the newspaper as saying he used to drink a bottle of vodka every day but to be creative he combined the alcohol with different kinds of drugs.

“I can’t recommend anyone to do the same. It is very dangerous and stupid in every way,” he said.

The father of four, who is married to a teacher, said in the interview he had come to a point where he had to choose between the human Lars Trier and the director Lars von Trier.

The director adopted “von” while studying at the Danish Film School.

The Star-Lord’s Awesome Mix

Guardians movie poster

Guardians movie poster

If you knew you were going to be abducted by a bunch of marauding space invaders but still have time to scrounge a few essentials, what would these be? Personally, I’d grab my collection of blues, pop, rock, new wave, classic rock, some Katy Perry and the Harry Potter audiobooks, upload the contents onto an iPod classic and pray the spacecraft has an outlet to recharge my gizmo.

Well, fictional Marvel Comics character Peter Quill of the “Guardians Of The Galaxy” didn’t have that luxury. What he had was a Walkman and a 60-minute cassette with a bunch of tunes taped by his just-deceased mother. Far from being screwed, Pete, who would later forge a career as space pirate with an ominous-sounding handle, Star-Lord, will find inspiration in the mix, using it as soundtrack to his adventures.

While saving the planet Xandar, Quill actually sang “O-o-h Child” by The Five Stairsteps to distract the enemy. He wooed green-skinned chick, Gamora, by playing for her Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around And Fell In Love.”

What else did he have in there? Blue Swede’s “Hooked On A Feeling,” with it’s “ooga chaka, ooga, ooga” adlibs; “Moonage Daydream” from a Spiders From Mars-era David Bowie; “Go All The Way” by The Raspberries; and Norman Greenbaun’s trippy “Spirit In The Sky.”

Therein lies the appeal of the mix: There’s everything for everyone. The inclusion of some songs (e.g. “Escape [The Pina Colada Song]”) might prove a tad confusing but, hey, it works.

If still unconvinced, put The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” and Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” on repeat and just let ‘er rip!

Gab on Beyoncé: To meet her would be ‘an honor’

GAB VALENCIANO (Photo by Marjorie Duran)

GAB VALENCIANO (Photo by Marjorie Duran)

Gab Valenciano is thrilled that his own “Super Selfie” videos have been the inspiration for a new DIY-style music video starring no less than Beyoncé herself.

Produced and directed by the global superstar, her video for “7/11” not only recreates the dance routines Gab made familiar in his own clips, it also mimics the lo-fi look and quick-cut edits that characterize the “Super Selife” series.

In an interview, the son of Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano shared, “We did speak to the producers and they are saying definitely there are possibilities for the meeting kasi Beyoncé and her team (Parkwood Entertainment) really enjoyed the concept.”

He added that should the meeting push through, “It would be an honor and privilege for me.”

Gab related, “When she shot the video, it was only her with friends and dancers, walang official camera man, and by the time she returned to her team, tapos na ang video so, editing na lang.” The process took only two, three weeks.

Gab claimed the singer told her management about incorporating elements of “Super Selfie” in her “7/11” video, with her supposedly saying, “This is something I want to do… I would love to bring him on board this project.”Beyoncé’s camp contacted Gab through his US agent followed by “consultations” via email.

Gab was overwhelmed that someone of Beyoncé’s stature would notice his creation and borrow his dance moves – including his signature at the end where he goes down on his knees and throws his arms in the air.

“It’s not every day that you’re handpicked kasi usually you apply (to give concepts or ideas). She and her team put that trust in my concept and choreography,” he related. “Beyoncé is one of my biggest inspirations and the fact that I got to work with her, that really boosted my morale.”

He lauded the Queen Bee for remaining true to the spirit of “Super Selfie,” which, he said, is all about “having fun and putting your own flavor to it.”

Wait, there’s more

Before “7/11,” Gab choreographed and appeared in rapper Lil Jon’s election-related campaign video “Rock The Vote” released last month.

He recalled telling the rapper at one point, “I was following your music since I was in high school and you’ve been such a big impact in our lives and I said, ‘Thank you.’”

Describing the rapper as “approachable, sobrang bait,” Gab noted, “Bilyonaryo na yata siya pero naka-jeans lang, naka T-shirt lang. It was a humbling experience kasi I was able to meet A-list artists like him and their personality are very, very normal.”

Gab revealed that he is also part of another “big” project “featuring a lot of cool people” that will be released mid-December.

Pinoy representative

More than gaining popularity, Gab is happy to share his talent with others and is doubly inspired to bring more attention to Pinoys on a bigger scale. “The fact that you can represent the Philippines, even in this way, is very rewarding. Nakakakilig sa puso kasi you’re not just doing things for yourself anymore,” said he.

Gab, a graduate of Full Sail University, Florida with a degree in Recording Arts, is grateful for his family’s continuous support and their encouragement for him to bring his talent abroad.

“It is right na umalis ako… I felt I wouldn’t be able to grow as an artist dito (sa Pilipinas). Kasi, at the end of the day, I’m still the son of Gary V. No matter what I accomplish, people see me as that, (although) I don’t mind that.”

He reasoned, “I’m a content creator, ’di ko magagawa ’yun dito kasi people already know me as a dancer. So I had to step out of the box, go somewhere else, learn, study. And when I did, I felt kind of vindicated.”

Gab returns to the US on Monday but he hopes that his involvement in “7/11” would open more doors for international opportunities.

Jon Jon Briones looked fresh and relaxed in his spacious dressing room at London’s Prince Edward Theatre despite having sang, danced and acted as The Engineer in “Miss Saigon” just a few minutes before. In The Engineer’s red-and-black jacket and pants, the actor earlier acknowledged the audience’s cheers and standing ovation for him and the rest of the cast. He has changed into a brown half-zip jacket, red shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes and warmly received us.

In The Supremo’s shoes

No one knows exactly how Andres Bonifacio looks like. Apparently, only one picture of the Supremo has survived through the years and it is fuzzy at best. Many who try to honor his memory, be it through some magnificent public monument or painting, rely mainly on imagination. The same goes with actors who have portrayed Ka Andres in films.

As we celebrate Bonifacio Day today, Bulletin Entertainment features the actors who’ve portrayed the revolutionary leader:

EDDIE DEL MAR

This late Kapampangan superstar is actually recognized as the Rizal of local silver screen, having played the National Hero onscreen twice: In Sa Dating Kandungan (1959) and Buhay at Pag-ibig ni Dr. Jose Rizal (1956), the latter earning him a FAMAS Best Actor award.

He also played one of Rizal’s most enduring heroes, Crisostomo Ibarra, in the screen adaptation of Noli Me Tangere (1961) and Sisa (1951). Moreover, he was named a Knight of Rizal by Calamba, Laguna.

Seemingly buoyed by the success, Eddie tried to spread his wings by taking on the title role in Teoderico Santos’ Andres Bonifacio (Ang Supremo) in 1964. He starred opposite Lolita Rodriguez. It proved to be his last memorable performance before fading into obscurity in the decades that followed.

His last stab at glory came in 1986 via an appearance in the drama Tinik sa Dibdib.

GARDO VERSOZA

The beefcake actor who first gained notice via the erotic-thriller Machete portrayed Bonifacio in Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s José Rizal in 1998.

While the movie earned critical acclaim, Gardo’s performance was simply ignored by most, except popular lawyer-movie reviewer Francis “Oggs” Cruz, that is.

In his blog, Cruz did not exactly give the actor a glowing review. He wrote: “Gardo Verzosa’s Andres Bonifacio is an unconvincing romantic wreck, written as a cardboard cutout of blind idolatry.”

ALFRED VARGAS

The hunky actor-turned-politician played Bonifacio twice via Supremo (2012) and Ang Paglilitis Ni Andres Bonifacio (2010).

Alfred, who considers Bonifacio his idol, earned rave reviews for his efforts. In an analysis of Supremo that appeared online, Alfred’s performance was described as having “a real sense of passion.”

The Quezon City solon has since been pushing for the recognition of Bonifacio as National Hero.

CESAR MONTANO

Cesar earned fame for his numerous action flicks. He earned respect as actor when he took on the role of Rizal, which earned him several acting awards, including a FAMAS trophy.

In 2012, he tried to gave life to the Supremo by the ER Ejercito-starrer El Presidente, for which he won the MMFF Best Supporting Actor plum. However, some people had questioned the portrayal of Bonifacio as hot-headed man.

SID LUCERO

Sid is the latest actor in our list to play Bonifacio. He did so via the TV series Katipunan.

In our interview, he admitted to initially having laughed off the offer, pointing out how he hardly looks the part. He also had problems with some of his Tagalog lines.

Despite his dilemma, Sid eventually earned accolades for his portrayal.

ROBIN PADILLA

Unlike the rest in this list, Robin’s turn as the Supremo is yet to be seen. The action star is hard at work on Boniacio: Ang Unang Pangulo, a movie that he hopes would change how the public, particularly the youth, regard the hero.

Will Robin’s performance find its mark? We’ll have to wait for this year’s MMFF to see.

Korina Sanchez files leave of absence

Korina Sanchez

Korina Sanchez

Award-winning news anchor Korina Sanchez has filed a three-month leave of absence from her news work starting January 2015 up to March 2015.

In an official statement from her camp, Korina filed the leave because of her studies, which requires her to make a trip abroad. Currently, the news anchor is taking up Master of Arts in Journalism at Ateneo de Manila University. She’s also applying for a simultaneous course at the London School of Economics and one of the requirements is taking a trip to Europe.

“I’ve talked about this with network management since middle of last year. The bosses were all for it. My advanced studies have taken the backseat for too long and if I don’t do this now, I may never. Kaya nga pinagsasabay-sabay ko na. It’s not easy but I’m optimistic I can do this,” Korina said in the statement.

Her business manager, Girlie Rodis, said the leave could take effect earlier depending on Korina’s travel plans for Christmas.

ABS-CBN News Head Ging Reyes confirmed that she has already received Korina’s request.

“The company values higher education as it is always a plus among our ranks. Many in our stable have also taken leaves of absence to pursue further studies. When they come back, there is always better output. We wish Korina the best of the experience,” Ging said.

Even while on leave from her daily live newscast, Korina will continue hosting her weekly magazine program “Rated K” and appearing in her occasional, award-winning interview show “Up Close and Personal” on ANC.

Korina will cover the visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines in January 2015.
