EXCLUSIVE: Teen Drama and more ‘Awkward’ moments

Stories of teenage troubles aren’t new to most young people. For American-born Canadian hottie Beau Mirchoff, these don’t necessarily define a person and could actually teach them valuable life lessons.

Playing Matty McKibben on MTV’s “Awkward,” the 24-year-old Mirchoff noted in an exclusive interview with Bulletin Entertainment, “Everyone is in their junior year of high school, so this season is more about redefining yourself. They’re rediscovering life, growing up. It’s about continuing to navigate their way down this awkward river!”

“Awkward” enters its all-new season 3, with Mirchoff returning as Jenna Hamilton’s (Ashley Rickards) boyfriend. The series picks up from the aftermath of the accident, as Jenna deals with new, not-so-fun stigma, while managing the daily drama that comes with being a teenager.

Calling to mind his younger years, Mirchoff admitted: “I was a little bit of a troubled teen – I messed around with the wrong crowd for a couple of years. I wasn’t too worried about my future for a while.”

Doing “Awkward” has been eye-opener for the actor. “I think I’m able to reflect on that time and remember what it was like to be 16. Everything means more – the stakes are higher, and things affect you in a deeper way. Ostensibly, they’re more important but at times they’re actually meaningless, so I have to remember to not be so mature about things. That’s not how it works when you’re a teenage – you let things build and fester,” he said.

Honesty And Consistency

Mirchoff credits the success of the show to its honesty. “I think a lot of shows after their third season get a little ludicrous or jokey and get away from what it was. I think ‘Awkward’ is maintaining its tone and the content it deals with.”

As such, its impact to viewers – most especially the teenagers – remains high. “We deal with real issues, which will affect someone who’s watching. That’s also a benefit and a goal of the show. We do not just entertain,” he added.

Recalling a potentially awkward experience on set, Mirchoff shared: “I had my shirt off every episode in the first couple of seasons, so I stayed in shape and ate healthy. After a while, towards the end of the last season, I said ‘Who cares?’ and I ate the donuts from the craft services table – so the gut would definitely show up. I figured, ‘Oh, they’ll shoot around it (laughs).’”

Still, that could not have been as awkward as missing a front tooth – for real!

“I had to get a front tooth fixed – it’s been a problem for many years – so they had to take it out and I had to wait for it to heal before they can put the permanent tooth in. So I have a temporary one that I can take out.”

He continued, “The other day, I went to the grocery store and thought it’d be interesting to go to the store without my tooth in (laughs).”

Clearly, the guy doesn’t embarrass too easily and that pretty much makes him perfect for a show built around the uncomfortable times in the lives of teenagers.

“Awkward” airs every Sunday at 11 p.m. with replays every Monday at 3 p.m., Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on MTV.
