On the heels of 10-year-old Barbara Miguel’s Best Actress trophy win at the Harlem International Film Festival for the Cinemalaya film “Nuwebe,” another young Pinay wins a top acting award in an international film festival.
“StarStruck Kids” alum Sandy Talag honored by an Outstanding Achievement in Acting award at the Oaxaca International Film Festival in Mexico for her performance of a child prostitute in the Dutch-Filipino film, “Lilet Never Happened.”
Talag has appeared in several films and TV series, including “Lovestruck,” “Ouija” and “Bahay Kubo: A Pinoy Mano Po!”
“She really immediately portrayed the girl the way I had in mind. She was really the type of energetic girl to play the role,” Dutch film director Jacco Groen said of Talag’s performance in a Sept. 12 interview with Danish website “Filmz,” whose clip was uploaded on YouTube.
In the same interview, Talag shared that she used her “power of imagination” to effectively play the role of an 11-year-old child prostitute named Lilet, nicknamed Snow White.
“I asked some of my friends, like, ‘What will you realize if your mom will told you that ‘Ay, you need to sell your body just to avoid poverty.’ So they answered me wisely.
“And then every single day of the taping that I’m not reading the script, I’m just saying to myself that, ‘Okay, imagine this Sandy, this is not a taping, this is for real, you’re on the streets, and your selling your body just to have some money, just to eat something,’” she recounted.
Set in the area in the Philippines, “Lilet Never Happened” is a real life story of Pinay kid that Groen had met in a mental hospital.
While the film shows hard hitting scenes, Groen assured that the 15-year-old actress was supervised by a psychologist, who advised them not to explain “all things in the script” to Talag “because she’s not yet ready for it.”
Apart from Talag’s trophy, “Lilet Never Happened” recently won Best Youth Film at the 2013 Buster Copenhagen International Film Festival for Children and Youth.
