Closely two decades since he went on hiatus, premier male ballet dancer Nonoy Froilan wears his dancing shoes again on Ballet Philippines’ third major production for its 44th season, “IllumiNATION.”
Froilan will once again play the role of old miser Ebenezer Scrooge in the heartwarming tale of Charles Dickens’ popular “A Christmas Carol.”
The 63-year-old dancer accidentally twisted his knee in one of his landings in a 1989 performance. Although he was operated on after the injury, his decision to accept this “challenge” was greatly influenced by his wife, acclaimed dance artist Edna Vida Froilan, who also happens to be the choreographer of this holiday show.
“I was (initially) hesitant about going back to dancing again. As far as I am concern, I’m done, I already done my part in dancing. (But she convinced me, saying) ‘Dad, you have to do it again, you have to come back and grace the stage again. You have to dance for me.’ She was very confident that I can do the role,” he told Bulletin Entertainment.
While being cautious with his moves due to his knee problem, Froilan is still able to run, turn and jump again.
“I cannot be an old man,” he stressed.
Froilan personally wants to share the lessons of “A Christmas Carol” in the time of adversity in the Philippines, particularly the value of sharing and love in the society.
“Don’t be a Scrooge – ‘Wag kang kuripot, ‘wag kang ganid, ‘wag lahat ng gagawin mo pera lang. – This story gives a message to everyone: ‘Hey, you cannot live in your own, you cannot live in your money, you have to share what you have,’” he shared.
The classic story of “A Christmas Carol” will be retold in ballet storybook/multimedia treatment from Nov. 29 to Dec. 8 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater in Pasay City.
