In the world of beauty pageants, 2013 will go down as a banner year for the Philippines. And we just ended it with a bang.
With three major crowns in Miss Supranational, Miss International and Miss World already secured, the last day of the year brought a fourth and final international title for the country as Angeli Dione Gomez wins Miss Tourism International 2013/2014.
Held in Malaysia for the 16th out of its 17 stagings, this is the third Miss Tourism International crown for the Philippines and its second consecutive after fellow Cebuana Rizzini Alexis Gomez (no relation) won the title last year.
The 20-year-old aspiring filmmaker bested 60 hopefuls, including 1st runner-up Sunidporn Srisuwan from Thailand who was also crowned Miss Tourism Queen of the Year 2013/2014 and 2nd runner-up Sarah Czarnuch from Malaysia who was crowned Miss Metropolitan 2013/2014.
Before she won the Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism International 2013 title that became her ticket to represent the country for this year’s Miss Tourism International pageant, Angeli Dione previously competed in this year’s Binibining Pilipinas but did not make the semifinals.
Last September, Mutya Johanna Datul won the country’s first Miss Supranational crown in Minsk, Belarus. That same month, Megan Young won the country’s first and long awaited Miss World crown in Bali, Indonesia while Bea Rose Santiago took home the country’s fifth Miss International title in Tokyo, Japan.
All these titles, along with the 3rd runner-up finishes of Koreen Medina in Miss Intercontinental pageant and Ariella Arida in Miss Universe have cemented the reputation of the Philippines as a beauty contest powerhouse along with perennial winners Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the United States.
