Did “Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy” overtake “My Little Bossings” down the homestretch of the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival box-office race?
Wenn Deramas, the director of the Vice Ganda comedy, certainly thought so when he posted this exuberant message on Facebook on Monday: “Hahahaha hooooo!!! Ganyan talaga sa karera! Lalo na sa Kabayo! Sa umpisa kunyari natatalo! Pero pinapadama lang kayo!!!! Vice Ganda is now Number 1!!!!”
“My Little Bossings”, a comedy starring Vic Sotto, Ryzza Mae Dizon, Kris Aquino and Kris’ son Bimby, had been the consistent box-office leader during the first week of the festival since it opened last Christmas.
However, festival chairman Francis Tolentino acknowledged on Monday that “Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy” had been ruling the daily grosses since late last week, pending the release of official box-office figures.
As of Monday, with both films claiming to have well surpassed P300 million in total gross receipts, Tolentino said that “My Little Bossings” remained the overall top grosser by a slight margin.
He told News reporter MJ Marfori that the festival had already posted a record total haul of P943 million and he expected it to exceed the P1-billion mark on Tuesday, the festival’s official closing day.
With the horror film “Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay” holding fast at the number 3 spot, another dead heat had emerged at 4th place with best picture winner “10,000 Hours” giving “Kimmy Dora: Ang Kiyemeng Prequel” a run for its money.
“Malaki hatak ng ’10000 [Hours]‘ dahil sa awards. Consistent sila so may chance talaga lahat ng pelikula na humatak pa pataas sa ranking sa takilya,” Tolentino noted in his interview with Marfori as posted on TV5.com.ph.
Tolentino added that given their impressive performance at the tills, “The top four films are extending hanggang 18th so malaki pa ang mako-contribute niyan sa overall box office.”
Although the festival officially ended Tuesday, the top-grossing films that will extend their run can still change the final overall rankings.
Last year’s festival had a total gross of P767 million, according to Tolentino.
