EDSA Revolution key players share thoughts on 28th anniversary

Certain personalities who played significant roles during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution have differing perspectives on the commemoration of “the revolution that surprised the world.”

“Hindi ganun ka-tagumpay ang pinaglaban,” film director Joel Lamangan told “TV Patrol,” adding, “(But) someday, some time we’ll really be free. Wala nang corruption.”

Lamangan was among those detained and tortured during the Martial Law era for taking part in one of the first rallies against the regime.

OPM icon Freddie Aguilar, meanwhile, deems that what they had fought for had already been forgotten, adding that the promised “daang matuwid” is non-existent. The singer-songwriter is behind a version of “Bayan Ko” which many people regard as one of the unofficial anthems of the revolution.

In contrast, singer and theatre actress Celeste Legaspi is all for celebrating the EDSA spirit especially for the youth, because of the prevalence of misinformation on the matter in this age of social media.

During her stage comeback in Nick Joaquin’s production “Mga Ama, Mga Anak,” Legaspi reminisced in a report on “TV Patrol” her “walang ligo, walang toothbrush” days together with actresses Mitch Valdes, Tessie Tomas, and actors Noel Trinidad and Subas Herrero at Channel 4 station during the revolution.

Jim Paredes, who penned the EDSA People Power Revolution anthem “Handog Ng Pilipino Sa Mundo” continues to write songs about patriotism. Paredes recently wrote “Thank You World,” a song of gratitude for all those who provided help for the “Yolanda” victims.

“There are stages of it that are healed up, fulfilled, there are stages na kailangan pang gawin,” he said of the status.

The APO Hiking Society member thinks “It’s going to be an open road, always we’ll fight for justice, freedom and equality.”
