Actor Jake Cuenca has scored a Best Actor Male nomination at the 4th Queens World Film Festival (QWFF) for his role in Joseph Israel Laban’s “Nuwebe.”

Cuenca is up against Kevin Thomas Costigan (“Killer”), Robert Nolan (“Mourning Has Broken”), Dexter Camara (“Silencio”), Rob McClure (“Recursion”), Robbie Capaldi (“Brighton”), Daniel Kyri (“Perfect Day”) and Chaske Spencer (“The Hero Pose”).

Laban is also nominated as Best Director for Narrative Feature, while lead star Barbara Miguel is also nominated as Best Actor-Female.

“Nuwebe,” an entry in the New Breed section of last year’s Cinemalaya, tells the story of Krista, a young girl made pregnant by her own father.

The film garnered a Special Mention Citation at the Puebla Internacional de Cine in Mexico as with the Youth Jury’s Mention of Honor at the III Festival Internacional Lume de Cinema in Brazil.

Prior, Miguel was already named Best Actress at the Harlem International Film Festival for the same role.

Also nominated in this year’s QWFF for Best Director Documentary Short is New York-based director Neha Gautam for her work on the documentary “Juana,” which is about a Filipino domestic worker subjected to domestic violence.

The 4th Queens World Film Festival will run from March 4 to 9 at Jackson Heights, Long Island City.
