Richard Gomez is both an actor and an athlete and apparently, he is “determined” to flex more of his sports muscles by vying to be part of the Philippine volleyball team.

Gomez, whose interest in the sport started in high school, is among close to 30 players that have been invited for the tryouts currently being held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

“I’ve been joining the tryouts since coach Francis (Vicente) issued the call and I’m not going to miss this chance at serving the flag once more,” said Gomez in a report on Spin.ph.

The official lineup of the national volleyball team that will compete in the 2014 PLDT HOME Fibr Asian Men’s Volleyball Club Championship (AMVCC), which the country will be hosting from April 8 to 16, will be announced by The Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF), on March 9.

It will be the first national volleyball team organized by the federation after many years of inactivity.

If ever he is picked, Gomez is set to make history as the first Filipino athlete to be able to don the national colors via four different sports.

In the early ’90s, he was part of the national team for rowing. He brought home numerous medals during his stint with the national fencing team from 1995 to 2005. Gomez also competed in a shooting event at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila, placing fourth.

In a separate interview, the film-TV actor, who is turning 48 this April, stressed that volleyball hasn’t really lost its relevance, pointing out that “It is (actually) number two in terms of popularity.”

“‘Yung volleyball association naman is doing something in terms of forming a competitive team sa region. It is also a welcome development na may effort sila to put up a team,” Gomez told Spin.ph.

He even noted that if the national team places well in the Asian volleyball landscape, “may chance tayo na masama sa Asian Games. Next year, may SEA Games kaya hopefully, magtuluy-tuloy ang programa.”

AMVCC organizing committee chairman Philip “Ella” Juico, former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, welcomes Gomez’s possible inclusion in the national team.

“Aside from his leadership, his experience playing for the three national teams will be a big factor for the team,” she said.
