Excuse me while I light the sky

There’s something about fireworks that can hold even grown men and women in awe, staring up at the night sky until the explosion of lights paint the black canvass with dazzling colors. Set the pyrotechnics up with the right mood and music, not to mention complex techniques in mounting the firework displays, and they “oooh” and “ahhh” in unison.

Such was the sight at the bay area in Mall of Asia where, for six Saturdays beginning last Feb. 15, the 5th Philippine International Pryomusical Competition was held. Never failing to attract a massive crowd, it has been quite the spectacle for old and young alike. Kicking off with an exhibition by the Philippine team of Platinum Fireworks, Inc. on the first day, the whole competition had seen entries from Australia, Spain, United Kingdom, France, Japan, China, Germany, Finland, Canada and the U.S.

On its last night, the U.S. team of Atlas Pyro Vision knocked out a presentation titled “Rock And Stars.” Setting their fireworks display to various rock tunes, the audience was treated to a spirited show with a Van Halen intro and music from Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Journey, Joan Jett and a couple from AC/DC – the widely appropriate “Thunderstruck” and “For Those About To Rock.”

In the end, only three were proclaimed winners of the competition: Second runner-up Jubilee Fireworks Company Limited (UK); First runner-up Liuyang New Year Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (People’s Republic of China); and grand winner Royal Pyrotechnie (Canada).

The closing night’s highlight was another exhibition by the Philippines’ Platinum Fireworks, Inc., which showcased their winning presentation that, we have to admit, was pretty impressive. Towards the end, the crowd reacted wildly when the background music of the fireworks display segued into “Let It Go,” that massive hit from “Frozen” – incidentally written by Fil-Am composer Robert Lopez.

Surprise With Sarah

Co-presenter SMDC did not let the night end without dishing out their own surprise: a rousing number by the pop superstar Sarah Geronimo.

Performing “Star Life,” the theme song of SMDC’s new campaign with the same name, Sarah wowed her audience with a bit of a song-and-dance amid another exciting pyro display.

As campaign ambassador, Sarah would tell the media that her new “Star Life” song bears “a very positive message; very aspirational (para) sa mga makikinig.”

She noted, “Even me, ‘pag pinapakinggan ko ’yung kanta, nai-inspire ako na talagang ma-achieve ’yung goal ko – hindi lang ‘bilang artist kundi ’yung mag-continue ba ‘yong pagkakaroon ng good life with my family. ’Yun naman ang aspiration ng lahat – to have the ideal home para sa iyo at sa magiging family mo sa future.”

One line of Sarah’s song goes: “It’s a space where the stars like you and I align…” This speaks of their message that one does not need to be a star to live their dreams. In the same way, events like the Pyromusical competition also bring people from all walks to life together, staring up at the sky making a wish.
