The hosts of “It’s Showtime,” including Jugs Jugueta Teddy Corpuz, Anne Curtis, Karylle, Iza Calzado, Kim Atienza, Eruption and Jhong Hilario, took their own selfie, inspired by Ellen DeGeneres’ record-breaking shot taken during the recently concluded Oscars.

Jugueta posted the photo on Twitter, in his effort to make it the most retweeted selfie in the Philippines.

“Hindi kami magpapatalo sa #selfie ng @oscars2014_! Let’s make this Showtime Selfie the most retweeted selfie in Philippine history! Let’s go! RT na!,” he said.

As of this writing, his post has amassed 601 retweets, a far cry from that of DeGeneres’ that has already accumulated over three million retweets.

Due to the overwhelming response, DeGeneres’ selfie, posted on Monday during the Oscars telecast (Sunday night, US time), crashed Twitter.

“So this is true. We just crashed Twitter. We got an email from Twitter, and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history. See, Meryl, what we did? You and I? It’s amazing, we really just made history. It’s fantastic,” she said shortly after posting the photo.

It wasn’t the first time.

Twitter briefly crashed on the same day as well during the live Q&A of “The Walking Dead” stars Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon on the show, with fans storming the site with the hashtag “#AskTWD.”

Recall that during the death of pop superstar Michael Jackson in June 25, 2009, the internet and cellular networks experienced a lag of sorts, allegedly due to a huge number users spreading the news all over the globe.

Social media has proven a great sounding board for fans all over the world to comment, discuss and share various topics.

Following the Oscars, in fact, netizens worldwide expressed grief and sympathy with Leonardo DiCaprio for failing to snag an Oscar yet again.

Nominated as Best Actor this year for his role in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” DiCaprio lost to Matthew McConaughey, who portrayed AIDS activist Ron Woodroof in “Dallas Buyers Club.” This is DiCaprio’s fourth Oscar nom (one for Best Supporting Actor, his first, 20 years ago; and three for Best Actor) where he went home empty-handed.

Thereafter, several sarcastic memes involving Leo circulated online.

Hashtags like “#PoorLeo,” “#GiveLeoAnOscar”#TeamLeo,” and “Leonardo DiCarpio” also became trending topics on Twitter.
