Wowie de Guzman, a member of the iconic dance group Universal Motion Dancers (UMD), knows what it’s like to be king on the dance floor. For this, he says one has to give his best during rehearsals.

“Kung ano ’yung gagawing performance sa stage dapat gawin na sa rehearsals hindi ’yung (magto-todo bigay) kapag mismong live performance na,” Wowie said in an interview during the recent Throwback Dance Concert organized by Neurobion.

The event saw the UMD in the spotlight along with dance groups The Manoeuvres and The Sexbomb Girls.

Jopay Paguia of The Sexbomb Girls agrees. “’Pag hindi ka nag-rehearse (magkakalat ka) sa stage,” she said.

As part of the group that popularized dance crazes like Shaggy’s “Carolina (Club Bounce Remix)” that had Pinoys grooving in ’90s, Wowie attests that practice can make or break a dancer, with injury even a possibility.

He also prefers “simple” choroegraphy to stunts and “buwis buhay” performances.

“Kami (UMD) kasi more on simple lang ’yung steps namin pero natatandaan. Sayaw lang, walang tumbling,” he said.

Jopay, whose all-female group is known for their hit “Spaghetti Song” and their unforgettable line “get, get, aww!” maintains that they don’t have specific rules when performing.

“Basta makapag-perform kami nang maayos sa stage,” she said, adding, “Mahalin mo lang ’yung trabaho mo, mag-trabaho ka hindi dahil sa pera. Magtrabaho ka galing sa puso mo.”

Jopay adds that one should always consider his/her audience. “Mag-perform ka para sa tao, hindi para sa sarili mo para mas nakukuha mo ’yung attention nila para mas masaya sila, masaya ka rin,” she said.

Wowie, however, points out a “no-no” in dancing: wearing shoes for fashion’s sake. “’Yung susuotin pangsayaw ay dapat pangsayaw talaga hindi magdadala ng shoes dahil pang-porma lang. ’Yung iba gusto nila maganda sila sa stage… puwede kang madisgrasya.”

The two advise aspiring dancers to be dedicated to their craft, with Wowie encouraging performers to be open to criticism. “

Kasi du’n ka mag-i-improve eh,” he said. “Kumabaga, kapag napuna ng isang tao ’yung pagsasayaw mo at sinabing kulang pa, ’wag mo i-take personally ’yun, i-take mo ’yun as inspiration para pagalingin ’yung sarili mo and keep on dreaming.”

The actress-dancer, for her part, said, “Basta siguraduhin lang nilang lalagyan nila ng puso palagi ’yung pagsasayaw nila and, of course, lagi silang makikinig du’n sa choreographers at handlers.”
