We see our favorite stars smiling like there’s nothing to it when they shake their moneymakers in front of the cameras, sometimes even being lifted by or thrown between backup dancers, and swished like human mops across the floor on variety shows and in concert.
Exhilarating? Yes, but also exhausting.
In an interview with Georcelle Dapat-Sy, the artistic director of G-Force and choreographer for TV shows “ASAP” and “Eat Bulaga,” the stars allot several days in a week to move like they do on stage, sometimes even learning dance steps for three numbers in one day. Top that with the stars’ schedule for their TV shows, movies, commitments in and out of town, pictorials, fitness regimen and, well, it’s all about dedication, determination, talent and a lot of towels for sweat.
Georcelle cited Sarah Geronimo, Anne Curtis, KC Concepcion, Enrique Gil, Iya Villania, Maja Salvador, Rayver Cruz and John Pratts as among the best celebrity dancers around.
“Sarah has the groove kasi singer siya. Lumalabas yung musicality niya, natural ang rhythm sa kanya. Si Anne naman, yung style of dancing niya ay sexy and naughty, talagang she gives the steps her own flavor. As for KC, may background siya sa dance kaya marunong siyang umintindi ng terms like pirouette and sashay,” the choreographer said.
She lauded Iya Villaniya for incorporating acrobatics into her steps “parang Cirque de Soleil.” Maja, meanwhile, has a way of “owning” the stage when she busts a move. Enrique Gil looks “lasap” when he dances because he is “a natural dancer even if he doesn’t know it…and he is so determined to learn different styles and get the steps right”
The choreographer added that many celebrities book private dance sessions with her. They include Iza Calzado, Dr. Vicky Belo and designer Rajo Laurel who’ve all attended her sensual dance workshops or what she calls the “#WhiteShirtLove” set. The stars undergo this at their own time to fit their busy schedules, but even regular folks can join a group class under them.
“They wear white shirt and whatever bottom they want because we want them to be really comfortable with their movements inside the classroom. The attire also shows what areas of improvement in their bodies they can improve. Para din kita how these shape up as we go along,” Georcelle said to that effect.
Several workshops are open to men. In fact, many of the celebrities the choreographer works with are hunks. Aside from Enrique and John, athlete-turned-actor Sam Milby goes to Georcelle for his dance numbers focusing on moves that show “form.”
Other stars whom Georcelle enjoys working with are Gary Valenciano, Vina Morales and Rachel Alejandro.
G-Force’s series of summer dance workshops dubbed G-Force Project is being offered at their dance studio in Quezon City up to May 29, 2014. Aside from “#WhiteShirtLove,” they offer K-Pop, Burlesque, Hip-Hop, 2-Werk, Kid’s Class, among others. The classes are taught by Georcelle herseld and her homegrown choreographers. Recital will be on May 29, 2014 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Georcelle advises people who want to become good dancers to invest time in learning the basics.
“These days, there’s no such thing as dalawang kanang paa when dancing. Anyone can learn dance.”
