Popular boy band One Direction is embroiled in a controversy after two of its members, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, were filmed smoking what appears to be a rolled-up “joint” while joking about drug use.
The footage, published by British news site Mail Online, was taken inside a sports utility vehicle (SUV) while the band was in Peru for the Latin America leg of their 2014 concert tour.
Tomlinson, the one narrating from behind the camera, was heard saying, “So here we are, leaving Peru. Joint lit. Happy days!”
Joint is slang for marijuana.
Tomlinson went on asking Malik, “What do you think about that kind of content?”
“Very controversial,” the latter replied.
Later, Malik sang while smoking the joint.
“That’s just Zayn warming up there before the show,” Tomlinson said. “Zayn takes his job very seriously. He makes sure he goes through a two-hour intense warm up regime before every show, just to get himself in the zone. One very, very important factor to Zayn’s warm up, of course is Mary Jane, herself.”
Mary Jane is also another term for marijuana.
At one point, the video pans to a police on a motorcycle.
The authority’s presence had Tomlinson laughing. He said, “He’s having a look. He’s thinking, ‘I’m sure I can smell an illegal substance in there…’”
Other members Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan were not seen in the five-minute footage.
According to a report on Mail Online, a representative of the band sent a statement, saying “This matter is in the hands of our lawyers.”
One Direction will have a two-night concert in the country on March 2015.
