The West End restaging of “Miss Saigon” received raves sfrom past members of the original ensemble during the red carpet premiere held at the Prince Edward Theatre in London.

Actor Jonathan Pryce, who originally played the role of The Engineer, watched the premiere to support a colleague that he worked with in the original production of the show.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Jon Jon (Briones) playing my part – the usurper. I worked with him for a year in London when he was in the ensemble,” Pryce said in an interview with ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau’s Rose Eclarinal.

He added, “I just felt very proud of him. I felt quite paternal watching him. I thought he was extraordinary. He has made it absolutely his own. He’s stolen a couple of bits of my business but on the whole he does his own thing.”

Pryce also missed the presence of their lead, saying, “I’m sorry Lea (Salonga) isn’t here.”

Asked what he thinks of the show, he answered, “There’s still lots of elements of the original production but I think it has become much darker, a little more violent, certainly more passionate.”

Pryce also lauded the portrayal of Fil-Am Eva Noblezada as Kim. “(She) is just phenomenal,” he said.

Myleen Klass, a British-Filipina television personality who was also part of the original cast of “Miss Saigon,” spoke of her experience.

“It was my first job out of college, so, yeah. It’s a very big deal. I mean, many Filipinos owe this show (so much) because it showcased the talent that Filipinos have and brought it to an international scale,” she said.

Meanwhile, the producer of the show, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, said that “Miss Saigon” would never “survive” without the cast from the Philippines.

“I am very grateful. Very proud of all the wonderful Filipino performers tonight. Brilliant,” he said.

Mackintosh said that the production has already regained the 4.5 million it invested from advance ticket sales.
