Maestro Ryan Cayabyab is thankful that the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra is showcasing his work via its Spotlight Series.

“I’m very grateful that they’re doing this kasi ang bilis ng turnover ng mga songs. Kung baga ang aming songs, ‘yung mga songs from the ’70s, from the songs of Canseco, Cuenco, Cruz and my songs, malapit ng ma-obliterate kasi meron ng bagong wave of songwriters,” he expressed.

Mr. C is referring to bands like the Eraserheads, After Image and Rivermaya among others.

“All the band songs kasi these are, for now, ‘yung songs na ‘yun ang parang mga bagong Filipino music literature,” he said, adding, “The young people now, they don’t know our songs. By featuring some of my music, a lot of them from the past, hopefully, the younger singers will get to know my songs.”

It is not surprising that the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra chose the music of the Maestro for the first-ever Spotlight Series because their main aim is to remind the younger generations of OPM’s colorful history.

Reinstating symphonic music into the lives of Filipinos is another.

Aptly entitled “The Music of Ryan Cayabyab,” the concert happening on May 3 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the CCP’s Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, is also an advanced birthday celebration of sorts for the Maestro who

will turn 60 on May 4.

To be showcased at the concert are Mr. C’s well-loved hits, as well as songs he wrote for musicals, films, commercials, and more.

The guest performers include Basil Valdez, who is singing two of the 14 compositions written for him by Mr. C; Mitch Valdes and Celeste Legaspi, who are singing songs from the musical “Katy”; and Hajji Alejandro who will sing “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,” the song which won Grand Prize at the 1977 Metro Pop Song Festival. Hajji will wear the same salakot he wore when he performed the song years ago.

Other big named performers who will grace the celebration are OPM President Ogie Alcasid, Piolo Pascual, Martin Nievera, Noel Cabangon and Bugoy Drilon. Also performing are The Ateneo Chamber Singers, Mass

Appeal Choir, jazz-vocal group Baihana and The Ryan Cayabyab Singers.

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, a joint venture of ABS-CBN and First Philippine Holdings, is composed of 42 musicians under the baton of Music Director Gerard Salonga and the guidance of Managing Director

Mickey Munoz.
