‘X-Men’, ‘Godzilla’ dominate PH box office

Just like in most countries, two rebooted blockbuster franchises have dominated the Philippine box office this month with record-breaking grosses of their own.

With mostly rave reviews and favorable word of mouth, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” made P175 million from almost 400 screens nationwide, making it the top grossing film on its opening weekend covering the period May 21 to 25.

With an 84 percent overall market, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is also the biggest film of 20th Century Fox to open this year so far. Surpassing the total Philippine gross of “The Wolverine” (P175 million), the movie now has the biggest opening weekend for a Fox film all time and the biggest opening weekend for the franchise.

Locally and internationally, it also ranks as the second biggest opening weekend of the year so far, just behind another Marvel superhero movie, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”.

With almost 900,000 admissions nationwide, the top cinemas that raked in the bulk of receipts in the box-office was led by SM Megamall at P8.2 million, followed by SM Mall of Asia at P7.8M and Trinoma with P7.7M. Still within the top five theaters were SM North Edsa/The Block at P6.3M and Glorietta4 at P5.9M.

Completing the list of top 20 screens that contributed to the film’s outstanding opening weekend were SM Cebu (P4.16M); Greenbelt 3 (P4.11M); Alabang Town Center (P3.99M); Greenhills TheatreMall (P3.98M); Eastwood (P3.92M); SM Southmall (P3.8M); Bonifacio High Street (P3.69M); Ayala Cebu (P3.6M); Powerplant (P3.4M); Gateway Cineplex (P3.36M); Shang Cineplex (P3.31); Newport (P3.1M); Robinson’s Ermita (P2.8M); Market!Market! (P2.7M); Robinson’s Magnolia (P2.53M) and Robinson’s Galleria (P2.51M).

Helmed by Bryan Singer, “X-Men: Days of Future Past” effectively reboots the X-Men franchise when Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is sent to the past by both Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen) to alter the future when the X-Men were overpowered by the mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels.

As a result of his visit to the past, not only has Wolverine, with the help of the much younger Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), successfully preserved the mutant race, he also altered the future and, in effect, erased the events that took place in “X-Men: The Last Stand”.

In terms of life-altering events, the Hollywood return of “Godzilla” was warmly welcomed by local audiences who considered it vastly superior to the 1998 version directed by Roland Emmerich.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (“Monsters”), the new film produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures is a throwback to the original Japanese versions of the film depicting the giant reptile monster in a more heroic light that fights alongside humans against a common enemy.

As a result of this sympathetic portrayal, local audiences rewarded “Godzilla” with a P90.4 million opening weekend gross covering the period May 15 to 18. Said figure represented Warner’s biggest opening for the year, surpassing the equally impressive debuts of “300: Rise of an Empire” and “The Lego Movie” in March and February, respectively.

Internationally, the film opened at number one in every major market in which it has been released, including the Philippines, UK, Australia, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Korea, Germany, France and Italy, to name only a few.

As of May 26, the film has a total box office take of P141.58M which contributed to its total worldwide gross of over $323.4 million in 10 days of screening. This also puts it in track to eclipse the $379M plus gross of the 1998 film especially when the new “Godzilla” opens in China on June 13.

Both “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Godzilla” are still showing in cinemas nationwide.
