Kiana Valenciano is slowly carving a name for herself as a singer of note, lending her voice to a song finalist at this year’s Philpop songwriting competition.

In a recent interview, Kiana admitted that she was initially hesitant to interpret “Dear Heart,” composed by Mike Villegas, but revealed that her parents “really pushed me to do it actually.”

Kiana, who described her singing style as a hybrid between Katy Perry’s and Rihanna’s, said, “When I heard it the first time, I was quite nervous because it’s not the type of song that I usually do.”

In the end though, she was happy with the experience. “Working with Mike is really great experience. He’s so supportive all the time. The song is so fun, fun to do,” she related.

Her parents, especially her dad, were great motivators, Kiana noted. “They are just there for me. My dad is helping me vocally, my mom is my manager. They are really both there. They are like my pillars of strength.”

She went on to share that Gary V was actually present during her recording session for the song. “Yeah he was there but it’s not as if I felt super pressured (with his presence). It was more comforting because I have a piece of home. My mom was there also.”

For Kiana, it will not matter who triumphs in the competition; it’s already a win-win situation for her.

“It’s a rare opportunity so I’m just very excited to be part of it. Actually, people are expecting me to feel very pressured and all that, but winning is the least of my problems. The whole experience in itself, it’s like I’ve won already,” said Kiana, adding, “For all of us (interpreters), we were just having fun.”

Music is very much in Kiana’s blood. Still, she admitted to being on the fence about a full time showbiz career.

“Not sure about that but as I said earlier, (music is a) part of who I am. So sooner or later it will come,” she assured.

The rest of the Philpop 2014 finalists are Davey Langit for “NGSB (No Girlfriend Since Break),” interpreted by Luigi D’Avola; Venelyn San Pedro for “The Only One,” interpreted by Thor; Ronaldo Sorioso for “Awit Mo’y Nandito Pa,” interpreted by YouTube sensations Aldrich Talonding and James Bucong; Daryl Ong for “Torpe,” interpreted by Kris Lawrence; Soc Villanueva for “Babalikan Mo Rin Ako,” interpreted by Nikki Gil; Jude Gitamondoc and Therese Marie Villarante for “Song On A Broken String,” interpreted by Nicole Asencio; Jungee Marcelo for “Salbabida” interpreted by Kyla; Allan Feliciano and Isaac Joseph Garcia for “Hangout Lang,” interpreted by Duncan Ramos and Young JV; QYork’s James Palma a.k.a. Flava Matikz and Cedric Bonjoc a.k.a. Knowa Lazarus for “Qrush On You,” interpreted by Elmo Magalona and Jay-R; Cecilia Bocobo and Isaac Joseph Garcia for “Kung Akin Ang Langit,” interpreted by Clara Benin and McCoy Fundales; and Ronaldo Sorioso for “Langit Umaawit,” interpreted by Tom Rodriguez.

Philpop 2014, presented by Smart and Spinnr, will name the P1 million winner on July 26 at the Meralco Theater.
