A flashy proposal

John Prats kneels before Isabel Oli to ask for her hand in marriage

John Prats kneels before Isabel Oli to ask for her hand in marriage

The way John Prats proposed to his girlfriend Isabel Oli has set the bar high. Ever wondered how he pulled off putting together a flash mob, huge audio-visual presentation and a grand fireworks display on the day they got engaged?

The decision to propose to Isabel was made early this year but the planning took about two months.

“Nu’ng pina-plano namin ’yung proposal, gusto ko talaga flash mob – ’yun kasi ako eh. Siguro ’yung pinaka-mahirap lang ’yung pagkuha ng dancers na marami. So, ’yung 350 dancers na nakuha ko, I had to trust them (to keep everything secret) kahit hindi ko sila kilala…” he shared on “The Buzz.”

While fixing everything at the mall where the proposal took place, the actor had to tell – okay, “lie” to – Isabel that he was in Batangas for taping. They even had a fight over it because John was hiding his text messages from her.

He set the grand proposal to coincide with his mother’s birthday celebration at the mall so Isabel would be wearing semi-formal clothes that night. Oli was accompanied by John’s sister, Camille, to stroll around the complex until they reach the plaza.

Funny, but even after seeing actor Sam Milby playing the piano as well as John’s flash mob and visual presentation, it didn’t dawn on Isabel right away that a proposal was being made.

“Ayoko talaga mag-assume. Sabi ko, ‘Ay, baka anniversary kasi namin pala today.’ So, parang mali kasi sabi niya sa akin ilang months ago, ‘Alam mo wifey, kung magpo-propose talaga ako sayo, tayo lang talaga makakaalam.”

Isabel was so surprised by the whole thing that John had to repeat his proposal thrice before she finally said yes.

“Nu’ng nagpunta ako kay Liv (Isabel Oli), she was shaking, talagang nanginginig. ’Yung pag-luhod ko sa kanya sabi ko, ‘Wifey, puwede bang ikaw na ang magiging Mrs. Prats ng buhay ko?’ Ang tagal (sumagot)! Parang nagdadalawang isip pa ’to kasi nanginginig, nagla-lock jaw na siya.

“Tinanong ko pa ulit, ‘Wifey, ano? Will you marry me?’ Ang tagal. Third na sabi ko, ‘Mag-iisip ka pa ba? Sobra na ’to!’

“Hanggang sabi niya, ‘Yes! Sobra!’ Gumanon na talaga siya, na-release niya na,” John recalled.

The actor was overwhelmed with how the crowd was cheering and excited for them.

“That night was the best, so far yet ’cause ’yung dance na ’yun was the best dance of my life,” John said.

Up to now, the newly engaged couple is in bliss. They feel good.

“Ang sarap ng gising ko kasi nag-update na kami ng status na she’s my fiancée. Ang sarap ng bagong status namin, ine-enjoy talaga namin like ’pag ini-introduce ko siya, ‘My fiancée,’” John said.

The two are thinking of tying the knot in April or May next year. Isabel disclosed that she would have wanted to get hitched as early as January 2015, but her fiancé objected because he wanted more time for preparations.

“Sabi ko sa kanya January, sabi niya, ‘Ha? Wait lang, hinga-hinga muna ako,” Isabel said.

Back to the beginning

Isabel first saw John at a mall show in Cebu when she was in high school. John, on the other hand, noticed Isabel on the TV series “It Might Be You” in 2003.

Although they already had a crush on each other for sometime, Isabel was initially reluctant to entertain the actor’s wooing. “Eh parang ang dami ko nang narinig sa kanya na parang nega – babaero parang ganon ta’s parang siya ’yung laging nangi-iwan, may ganon eh,” Isabel explained.

Thanks to Camille, Isabel was convinced to give her number to him. John, who just came from a failed relationship that time, would comment on Isabel’s Instagram, expressing fondness for her.

When John learned that Isabel is dating someone, he rushed to ask her to be his girlfriend.

“Sabi ko, ‘Cams (Camille Prats), may ka-dinner na!’ Sabi niya, ‘Kuya, paspasan mo na!’ So ginawa ko, talagang tinawagan ko na siya, sabi ko, ‘San ka? Dito ako sa Manila. Puntahan kita.’ Lumuhod ako sa kanya. Sabi ko sa kanya, dalawang beses lang ako luluhod sa buhay ko – ngayon na hihingin ko ’yung kamay mo bilang girlfriend and ’yung pangalawa ’pag nag-propose ako,” he recounted.

Isabel’s message to John on “The Buzz” was sweet and sincere.

“I really thank God na binigyan niya ako ng time na makilala ka and I really thank God also na parang bliness pa niya tayo ng ganito kasi akala ko talaga wala na eh, wala nang pag-asa talaga sa love… meron pa pala.” (Photos from Nice Print Photogtaphy)
