Maxene Magalona said goodbye to her long locks recently in order to help uplift the lives of cancer-sticken Filipino children.

“People know me for my long hair, parang trademark ko na ’yan. But when they asked me to cut it for a cause, ginawa ko talaga kaagad lalo na para sa kids,” she said in an interview.

The activity, dubbed the Matrix 8-Inch Cut for Cancer Challenge, was organized by Matrix in partnership with Kythe Ateneo, an organization that provides psychosocial care and assistance to young cancer patients.

The challenge aims to collect enough hair to create hairpieces for patients.

Maxene explained that most of the kids have no idea why their hair fall off. “And when they lose their hair their self-confidence diminishes,” said Maxene, who joined the effort along with lifestyle blogger Jackie Go.

“Your hair will grow pa, but these kids’ lives are actually very fragile,” Maxene said, encouraging others to join the cause by simply having their hair cut at branches of David’s Salon from Oct. 26 to Dec. 31.

The actress related that she had long been a supporter of Kythe even as a student at Ateneo. “Kasi I love kids… and it’s so hard to see them in so much pain,” she said.

Maxene recalled the organization’s past activities in aid of kids, noting, “May mga parties kami na may clowns kasi we are trying to keep off the topic of cancer. It’s important to distract them somehow.”

Her other reason for supporting the project is her late father, rapper Francis Magalona, who died of complications relating to leukemia in 2009.

“Napakasakit na mawalan ka ng loved one dahil sa cancer but there are people lucky enough to survive this disease and sadly my dad isn’t one of them but he is in a better place right now,” she said.

Freelance artist

The longtime Kapuso star surprised many when she recently sat as one of the judges in ABS-CBN’s noontime variety show “It’s Showtime.”

Maxene, who started her showbiz career with the network as a regular on “Ang TV,” explained that her appearance was “more of a freelance thing lang. Para ma-experience ko lang.”

She then confirmed that she is no long with GMA Network. “Sabi ko sa kanila na there are times talaga na you need to move on,” she said.
