Although the decades that came before it are considered by many as arguably more eventful and colorful, those who have lived through the 1990s will remember it as a period of transition that changed the way people do things.
With the emergence of the internet and cable television, the ‘90s was indeed, as a new National Geographical Channel documentary mini-series aptly puts it, “The Decade that Connected Us”. Yes, the same channel that brought us “The ‘80s: The Decade That Made Us” has now come up with a similar presentation that looks back at the decade known for its technological, political and entertainment milestones.
Among the several highs chronicled in the series include Steve Jobs’ triumphant return to Apple Computer and the subsequent innovative products that he oversaw such as the iMac and the iPod; the transformation of MTV from a purely music video channel to one that pioneered groundbreaking reality shows like “The Real World”; the popularity of the sitcom “Friends”; the grunge sound pioneered by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana; and Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and subsequent rise as leader of South Africa.
The decade also had its low points which included the tension brought about by feared leaders like Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden; Bill Clinton’s scandals such as his much-publicized liaison with Monica Lewinsky; the OJ Simpson double murder trial, the violent LA Riots; the horrific civil war in Rwanda; and the untimely demise of Princess Diana.
The series uses memorable video footage from the ‘90s to recall the spirit of the decade along with 120 original interviews with the biggest newsmakers of the decade who shocked, wowed or changed the world and helped make it what it is today.
From the unsung heroes to well-known personalities from the fields of technology, politics and entertainment, the featured interviewees recall their roles in shaping up this extraordinary era including familiar faces like Courtney Love, Arsenio Hall, Vanilla Ice, Jerry Springer, Tony Blair, Colin Powell, Connie Chung, and Dan Rather.
“The ‘90s: The Decade That Connected Us” currently airs on the National Geographic Channel every Thursday at 9PM on the National Geographic Channel.
