Francis Xavier Pasion’s “Buwaya” bested eight other Asian entries in competition to win Best Film at the ongoing Tokyo Filmex Film Festival in Japan on Saturday.

Based on actual events in the marshlands of Agusan Del Sur, “Buwaya” tells the story of a grieving mother who is looking for the body of her missing daughter who was attacked by a crocodile.

The award came with a cash Prize of 700,000 yen (approximately P265,000).

In August, “Buwaya” also won four awards, including Best Film, at the Cinemalaya X festival’s New Breed section.

Coincidentally, two other filmmakers who were involved in Cinemalaya also won big at the Tokyo Filmex.

Giancarlo Abrahan, who directed “Dagitab” in that same Cinemalaya batch, also won big in Tokyo but for an upcoming project. Abrahan won Best Project at at the Talents Tokyo pitching competition sponsored by the Berlinale Talents.

“There are actually five Pinoys in Talents Tokyo. Francis Xavier and Hannah Espia also won funding from the Masters program,” indie producer Alemberg Ang, who is also in Tokyo attending the festival, told InterAksyon.

Established in 2000, Tokyo Filmex has been known to attract emerging filmmakers from Japan and neighboring Asian countries. Talents Tokyo, on the other hand, is a creative and networking platform for 15 up-and-coming filmmakers from East and Southeast Asia.
