Bill Murray on being a saint, – St. Vincent, that is

Los Angeles – “Bring out the champagne!” Bill Murray exclaimed when he walked into the Fairmont Royal York hotel room where we will interview him for his latest film, “St. Vincent.” The iconic actor, a rare breed in Hollywood who has no agent or manager, is obviously in high spirits.

In the comedy-drama, the 64-year-old actor portrays Vincent MacKenna, an old war veteran who is also an inveterate gambler and drunk. He is to learn more about himself babysitting his neighbor’s 12-year-old son.

“Some people may see him as a loser but he is actually just a man who is lost,” Bill said of the character. “He was a hero who saved many people in the war because they needed him. But there is no war now. He loved his wife but there is no wife for the past eight years. There is no real occupation and there is nothing that has grabbed him. He has sex with a pregnant woman and it is because there is a need but he really cannot enunciate the kind of need he has.

“So his family crashes into his life and at first, it’s an opportunity for him to perhaps make more money. But it becomes clear that he sees a value in passing on what he can to someone else, just so he would have something to do with his life. So he is not really a loser, he’s just a little lost. And he is a thoughtful enough guy who struggles with that pain. He is angry and frustrated because he cannot understand where it really comes from.”

Note that Bill recently got a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance in the movie. He also got a nod from the Broadcast Film Critics’ Association Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy for the same role.

On political correctness, Bill commented, “Yeah, I think we can all agree that political correctness, just the term makes your mouth taste like what that tastes like. That it is just appropriate in quotes and it is not right. I mean, there is thoughtful and there is thoughtless.”

He continued, “If we all got a little bit more serious about what the point of this life is, why and what are we doing here, we wouldn’t get so touchy about our neighbor’s dog. And I think if we got a slap in the face and said, ‘What are you doing here anyway?’ you would not be so sensitive about those kinds of things. You would realize there are much deeper issues to get involved in.”

So was there someone in his life who made an impact on him, we asked. “I had a really good baseball coach when I was a little kid,” he revealed. “He was funny. He was not very serious. He was not life or death. We were having fun. We were playing a game. He respected everyone’s personality and he did not try to mold us into one kind of same person. Everyone was very different.”
