At the launch of his latest album “Master Of Soul,” Thor’s long list of thank yous was commensurate to the eight years he’s had to wait for the second wind he now enjoys.
In between songs, the singer lauded people who believed in him from the time he bravely stepped foot in Manila from Davao in 2002 to make a name for himself with just a prayer in his pocket, those who stood by him when that bid did not turn out the way as hoped, and the key players who’ve rallied behind his triumphant return to the music scene. In a business where talents are dime a dozen and breaks are hard to come by, Thor should be grateful.
Then again, he deserves it. Thor’s talented. We hear that in his rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing,” which paved the way toward his entry in the first season of “The Voice” under Team Apl. He’s got good judgment—just check out the two promotional songs of “Master of Soul” and know that he’s placed his bets on the best picks (“Paano Ko Sasabihin” and “I Miss You”). The singer is versatile in that he can sing both old and new songs in style all his own.
It wasn’t an easy climb. When he was still a struggling a musician, Thor lived in a bare room and slept on the floor. When his radio show got shelved, the singer has had to learn to accept that though he’s one of the better singers around, he’ll probably just be a backup singer for the rest of his career. Even when he made it to “The Voice,” he only went as far as Top Eight; no shabby achievement there but many agree it could’ve been more because Thor has more to offer.
These days, the singer can afford to look back on those challenges with a smile. The grin grows wider when he begins to count his blessings through the years. These include sharing the stage with international acts David Benoit, Air Supply and David Foster; doing duets and recording songs with Jay Durias, Nina, Luke Mejares; the two albums he did previously; last year’s back-to-back concert with Jovit Baldivino; and breathing life into the works of top tunesmiths Jonathan Manalo, Jungee Marcelo and Soc Villanueva in “Master of Soul” produced by Cornerstone Music and distributed by Star Music.
Thor’s on radar alright. He’s back in the game.
