Former beauty queen Maria Isabel Lopez echoes the sentiment of many Filipinos that it’s about time local designers make the gowns used by Pinay bets at the Miss Universe pageant.
Her opinion came after the flak that Miss Philippines MJ Lastimosa’s national costume and evening gown got from netizens recently. Designed by Colombian Alfredo Barraza, the costume is a floral terno said to have been inspired by the Panagbenga Festival of Baguio; while the evening gown is a mermaid-style, crystal-embellished dress.
Lopez, a vocal critic of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI), said the decision to let foreigners clothe Pinay representatives is a “slap” to local designers.
“Sampal ’yun sa ating mga local designers. Nobody could interpret the national costumes except the Filipinos themselves,” Lopez said.
She noted that there are a lot of Pinoy world-class designers, citing the likes of Albert Andrada, Rocky Gathercole and Francis Libiran.
Lopez went on to describe Lastimosa’s costume.
“’Yung evening competition na ang haba-haba ng figure ni MJ, nagkaroon ng cut (iyong gown). Tapos naka-white. Imbes na humaba ang kanyang svelte figure, na-shorten ’yung figure niya tuloy…”
BCPI Chairperson Stella Araneta had earlier defended Barraza, pointing out that she has been using his creations since 1999 when Miriam Quiambao placed 1st in the international pageant.
Araneta explained on “TV Patrol”: “If I didn’t do it for several years, it’s because the designs that were given to us were not good enough for our candidates. That’s the reason I went abroad.”
Lopez, the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1982 title-holder, recalled that during her time, they could choose local designers for their dresses. Hers was Rudy Fuentes.
Recall that Lopez slammed the BPCI during her reign for allegedly asking her to resign after walking the ramp and bared some skin at a fashion show.
She clarified that her opinion on Lastimosa’s gown has nothing to do with that rift.
“Nothing personal. I’m just being objective,” she said.
Meanwhile, Lopez looks forward to the stint of Winwyn Marquez, daughter of Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno, on Binibining Pilipinas 2015. It was recently reported that the 22-year-old actress is among the 34 candidates in this year’s beauty tilt.
“I’m so happy for Winwyn. Winwyn for the win!” she enthused.
She advised future hopefuls to “dare to be different.”
She elaborated, “Hindi puwede na ’yung typical beauty queen ka kasi lahat magaganda. How do you stand out?”
Lopez, a freelance talent, is part of GMA-7’s concluding TV series “Ang Lihim ni Annasandra,” topbilled by Andrea Torres, Mikael Daez, Pancho Magno and Cris Villonco.
As advice to other showbiz hopefuls, the actress said, “Popularity – this is not we’re aiming for. We’re aiming for longevity. ’Yung kahit nanay ka na, may anak ka na, you still reinvent yourself, you continue to stay in the industry. Ang labanan dito, hindi popularity. Maraming popular, they come and go but longevity is the key.” (With report from Bhenj Agustin)
