Audio Junkie: Smooth and easy does it

Diana Krall

Diana Krall

Fresh off the record pressing plant is Canadian singer-pianist Diana Krall’s 12th studio album, “Wallflower.” Released worldwide last month, it’s an all-covers album from the jazz act that is homogeneous in the choice of collaborators and songs (mostly from the ’60s and ’70s).

The album’s guest performers share the same North American (Canada) roots. There’s Michael Bublé who does an excellent job of blending with Krall on “Alone Again (Naturally)”; and Bryan Adams, who lends his throaty vocals on “Feels Like Home.”

It’s interesting to hear Krall cover songs by The Carpenters, the Eagles, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, etc. She took exceptional care in making these her own. My personal picks are her subdued take on 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” and Elton John’s “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.”

She made John Lennon’s “In My Life” more poignant by easing on the tempo. Her version of The Mamas & The Papas’ “California Dreamin’” is also nice.

The title track is a cover of an old Bob Dylan song and this particular “Wallflower” manages to bring a barroom and country flavour to the relaxed affair.

Seemingly random picks that surprisingly still worked given the context of the album, are her take on the Crowded House staple “Don’t Dream (It’s Over)”; Randy Newman’s “Feels Like Home”; and Paul McCartney’s “If I Take You Home Tonight.”

Overall, the package has a languid feel to it, if too smooth; perfect for easy, cozy Sundays and holidays.
