Behind the scenes at the 87th Academy Awards

Los Angeles – Eddie Redmayne, who just won the Best Actor award for his performance in “The Theory of Everything,” was cradling his Oscar statuette like a baby.

Patricia Arquette, who won Best Supporting Actress for “Boyhood,” got a loud applause from the press for talking about women’s rights in America.

Common and John Legend, whose composition “Glory” for “Selma” won Best Original Song, did not want to leave the press room as they passionately talked about their song and the movie.

“Birdman” director Alejandro González Iñárritu did not want Sean Penn to leave during the pictorial of the winners so the latter is included in the “Birdman” group photo.

These are just some of the behind-the-scenes moments at the 87th Academy Awards held recently at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.

White or silver was the predominant color on the red carpet. Still, our favorite red carpet ladies donned some colorful gowns like Scarlett Johansson, who was stunning in a green sexy Atelier Versace dress; Rosamund Pike in a fiery ravishing red off shoulder Givenchy dress with a high revealing front slit; Jennifer Aniston in a classic sparkly nude Versace gown; and, the very feminine Felicity Jones who was a vision in a silver halter ball gown dress by Alexander McQueen.

Surprisingly, Jennifer Lopez, who was radiant in a nude halter Ellie Saab Couture ball gown that was accentuated with Swarovski crystals, had a similar gown worn by Robert Duvall’s wife, Luciana Pedreza. Must be an awkward moment especially for someone who must have paid a lot for the gown.

One of our favorite moments at the Oscars was host Neil Patrick Harris’ opening musical number, which Filipino-American award-winning composer Robert Lopez and his wife and musical partner Kristen Anderson-Lopez composed specifically for the Oscars. It was their first time to compose something for an awards show.

Robert said in an interview they are big Neil Patrick Harris fans so they said yes immediately to his request to compose a song. The original multimedia-musical sequence, titled “Moving Pictures,” also featured the Lopezes’ experience as Oscar nominees. The couple won last year for their composition “Let It Go,” for the box-office hit “Frozen.”

We also completely enjoyed watching Lady Gaga pay tribute to Julie Andrews and sing some of our favorite tunes from “The Sound of Music,” which was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Even Julie was so impressed with Lady Gaga’s performance she exclaimed after, “Thank you dear Lady Gaga for that amazing tribute. I blinked. And before you know it, 50 years had passed already.”

Backstage, Patricia talked about women’s rights in America that Meryl Streep applauded and got excited for.

Asked if she saw Meryl’s reaction, the award-winning actress said, “I didn’t, but I heard about it, and I hugged her afterwards… She (Meryl) is the queen of all actresses, patron saint of all actresses, so it is amazing. But it is time for us, it is time for women. Equal means equal. And the truth is, the older women get, the lesser money they make. The highest percentage of children living in poverty are female-headed households.

“The truth is, even though we sort of feel like we have equal rights in America, right under the surface, there are huge issues that are applied that really do affect women. And it’s time for all the women in America and all the men who love women, and all the gay people, and all the people of color that we’ve fought for to fight for us now.”

As for Eddie, we asked him if he was nervous when he heard his name called as the winner and getting his first Oscar.

He said, “First of all, I was recovering from the excitement of receiving the award from Cate Blanchett because one of my first films was with Cate when we did ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age.’ She is an exceptional actor. Then I was just trying to bury all this frenzy of nerves and white noise and trying to speak articulately and, of course, you then forget everything. But it just felt like a euphoria really, an extraordinary euphoria. It’s something I will not forget in a hurry.”

He admitted feeling more nervous three years ago when he came to the Oscars for the first time with the “Les Misérables” cast wherein, he said, “I had to sing live on stage. Just before going on, someone with a headset said, ‘Yeah, that’s a billion people watching.’ That’s too much stress for your vocal chords to possibly consider. So that was such a terrifying prospect. But actually today felt much more relaxing. You either win or you lose. Either way, I was so thrilled to be invited to the party.” (Photos by Sthanlee B. Mirador)
