Kathryn Bernardo admits feeling awkward around Nadine

Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre

Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre

Is there an issue between young stars Kathryn Bernardo and Nadine Lustre?

Fans have been pitting the two against each other with Nadine rising to popularity after the success of her movies with heartthrob James Reid.

Kathryn admitted she is uncomfortable about the whole thing, to the point that she now feels awkward around Nadine.

She told “The Buzz” on Sunday, “Kasi, first, of course, with (people talking about it on) social media, parang nauunahan ng lahat ng tao (na may rivalry kami) bago pa kami mag-meet, ’di ba?”

Kathryn hopes to clear the air with Nadine personally.

“Hindi pa nabe-break ’yung awkwardness na ’yun kasi hindi pa kami formally nagme-meet,” she added. “Like siguro sa backstage (ng ‘ASAP’), du’n lang kami nagkikita kaso (pareho kami) parating nagmamadali.”

“The Buzz” host Kris Aquino quickly offered herself as mediator between the two, relating how she is to meet with Nadine for a taping. She vowed to bring Nadine to a cinema to watch Kathryn’s latest film with Daniel Padilla titled “Crazy Beautiful You.”

On co-’It’ Girls

Apparently, Kathryn doesn’t want to be seen as competing with actresses of her generation.

In fact, when asked who among Julia Barretto, Liza Soberano, and Janella Salvador she considers her rival, Kathryn quipped, “I think hindi ako ’yung right person to answer that.”

She cited each of the girl’s strengths, noting how Julia is smart and pretty, Liza a vastly improved actress, and Janella a good singer.

Kathryn believes competition won’t help their careers. She’d rather that they support each other, much like what she and Julia Montes, her former “Mara Clara” co-star, are wont to do.

“Kami kasi (ni Julia), nagwo-work ever since talaga, na hindi namin iniisip ’yung ganon (rivalry). Like sinasabi namin na ‘Magtulungan tayo kaysa magpagalingan tayo (kasi) hindi siya makatutulong,’” Kathryn shared.

Still a no-go

Meanwhile, when asked if she and Daniel are already an item, Kathryn shared, “Hindi pa (kami romantically involved). Kasi parang kami ni DJ (Daniel’s nickname), parating tinatanong niyan. Kami, hindi naman namin maitatago na special (ang turing namin) sa isa’t isa. Siguro we’re very close,” she said.

Kathryn clarified rumors on them supposedly celebrating an “anniversary.”

“Kasi kino-consider na lang siguro namin na ’yung day na naging love team kami o na-pair up kami sa isa’t isa (via the teen-oriented show “Growing Up” in 2011) na ’yun na lang ’yung parang anniversary namin,” she said.

As if to stress a point, the 18-year-old maintained she will not stop Daniel from seeing or wooing other girls.

“May right naman (siya). Siguro ang selfish ko naman kung sabihin ko na ayaw ko siyang manligaw sa ibang babae. He’s very young, 19, and hindi ko siya ipagkakait sa iba,” she said.
