Boy band JYJ and other K-pop celebrities who were banned from appearing on TV may soon find a solution to the problem.
On April 14, Korean National Assembly Rep. Choi Min Hee filed a bill that will effectively sanction Korean broadcasting companies banning celebrities from TV without justifiable reason.
Choi, member of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy party, filed the so-called JYJ bill to empower the Korea Communications Commission to intervene when a broadcasting company decides to prevent a celebrity from appearing on TV, according to the Korea Herald.
JYJ has been unable to appear on Korean TV music programs since 2010 after taking their former agency to court to annul their exclusive contracts.
In February 2013, Korea’s Fair Trade Commission issued an order against the agency and to the Korean Federation of Pop Culture and Arts Industry (KFPCAI) not to intervene in JYJ’s activities.
The order proved futile however, with JYJ still unable to appear on TV music programs till today.
Choi’s bill seeks to amend Article 85 Clause 2 of Korea’s Broadcasting Act, which lists prohibitions for mainstream and cable TV channels.
She said JYJ, which has helped raise the standards of contracts in the Korean entertainment industry, “should not be subjected to an undue disadvantage anymore.”
The bill got an approval and support rating of 80 percent or 1,748 votes among netizens in an online poll.
On Twitter, fans praised the bill, expressing hope to see JYJ on TV soon.
“God bless Choi Min Hee. Hopefully JYJ law will be passed,” one posted.
Choi is a member of the National Assembly’s Committee on ICT, Future Planning, Broadcasting and Communications.
She became the vice chairman of the Broadcast Committee of the Korea Broadcasting Commission, now the Korea Communications Commission, in 2006.
