Korina Sanchez, who hosts the 10-year-old weekly magazine show “Rated K,” enumerates the factors that could help people become successful.

“Number one, kailangan mahalin niyo at pagsilbihan niyo ang mga magulang mo. Kapag hindi mo minahal at pinagsilbihan ang magulang mo ay mailap ang suwerte sa‘yo,” Korina shared in an intimate gathering with select entertainment editors and writers.

Second is self-confidence. The award-winning broadcast journalist shared the example she often cites in her talks when driving the point home.

“Ginagawa kong example (eto): ‘Si Enrique Gil, gwapo?’ Oo daw. ‘Si Daniel Padilla ba gwapo?’ Nagsisigawan na ’yan. ‘Si Piolo (Pascual)? Si Coco Martin?’ Oo daw,” she said.

“’Eh, si Willie Revillame?’ Hindi sila kikibo.”

Korina continued: “Sabi ko, ‘Pero sino sa kanila ang may 12 sports cars, apat na mansion, dalawang yate at isang eroplano?’ Magsisigawan sila, ‘Si Willie!’ (That’s when I say) ‘I rest my case’ (dapat) ‘bilib sa sarili.’”

To reach success, one should should set and work toward achieving goals.

“Kailangan may pangarap pero kailangan pinaplano ang pangarap,” she quipped.

Factors four and five require even more diligence and some help from the divine.

“Angat ang masipag kesa sa matalino. Totoo naman, ’di ba?” Korina said, adding in jest, “Malaki ang sweldo ko sa valedictorian namin…”

“(Finally), pray and believe.”

Her show’s track record bears wisdom to her words. Based on Kantar Media Philippines, “Rated K” remains the most watched and number one Sunday TV program in the country to this day. “Rated K” features a diverse line-up of stories that mirrors and highlights Filipino culture – from inspiring stories of both celebrities and ordinary Pinoys to the latest trends in technology, food, and fashion to unusual tales of mystery and suspense to the hottest entertainment and lifestyle and leisure venues around the Philippines to even funny and trending events and personalities.

“Hindi ko ito ma-attribute to anybody except for the fact na sinusuwerte ako,” humbly said of her show’s success.

Asked on her mindset when it comes to competition, Korina likened it to how horses keep blinders on to focus on the road and their own speed especially in a race.

“I don’t look at competition,” Korina said. “Ang target ko is my own. Ganoon ako. I hardly look left and right and I want my own pace because I know I work really fast. I don’t want to be dictated by competition.”

On rumors that she was “fired” by the Kapamilya News management, Korina reiterated she’s simply “on leave.”

“Saan ba nanggaling ’yang kuwentong ’yan? It’s really because of school (that I had to lighten my work load). I’m taking my Master’s tapos meron akong London School of Economics, parehong online,” she said.

As brilliant as she is, Korina admitted striking a balance between school and work hasn’t been easy.

“Komo parehong online, akala ko madali. Diyusko, sukdulan pala ng hirap! (’Yung sa) Ateneo pa lang, nagkukumahog na ako.

“So, I lessened my load sa London pero meron pang on-campus two weeks ang Ateneo. Twice kong muntik nang ma-drop ang subject ko kasi I have a daily, ‘TV Patrol,’” said she, who plans to get a doctorate and resume studies in French after completing her master’s.

Korina said she doesn’t know yet if her husband, DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, is running for higher post in 2016 or not.

“Hindi pa naman nag-de-decide si Mar,” she said. “I’ll only find out in June.”

This is the reason she is thinking of extending her leave from “TV Patrol” till June.

“Kasi kung babalik ako (earlier) tapos magde-declare din pala siya…

“(Kaya) tuloy-tuloy ako (sa leave). ’Pag hindi siya mag-declare, balik ako (sa ‘TV Patrol’).” (With report from Alex V. Brosas)
