The ‘angels’ in Pokwang’s life

POKWANG

POKWANG

Memories of her son Shin’s short life remain fresh in Pokwang’s mind.

Shin succumbed to congenital brain ailment at the tender age of five. Pokwang, who was working abroad then, was unable to return home for the funeral.

Although still wrestling with her loss, she relieves herself with the thought that her son is now an angel guiding and protecting her. The actress, in fact, credits Shin with her success over the years.

Note that Shin is just one of many that Pokwang considers her angels. The popular comedian revealed the rest:

The river angel

Pokwang figured in a near-death situation when she was in Grade 2.

“Kasi ang hilig kong maglaro-laro sa mga ilog. Muntik na akong malunod. Pwede kong ikamatay ’yun,” she says.

She was with friends then but they were busy catching dragonflies to notice her nearly drowning. She claimed an angel came to rescue her in what seemed to her as human form.

Pokwang shares, “May nakita akong liwanag. May lumalangoy-langoy. May bata.”

Her siblings as angels

The actress gets emotional recalling her hardships in the past.

“Dati pinapalayas kami sa inuupahang bahay dahil wala kaming pambayad,” she says, adding her siblings would often bail her out of the situation.

She recalled an incident when her eldest child had fever.

“Sobrang tindi ng lagnat niya, (pero) wala akong mapagkunan ng pera (para ipagamot siya). And then dumating ’yung kapatid ko. Sabi niya, ‘Ito, may natira pa akong pera. Itakbo mo sa ospital ’yan,’” she shares.

Pokwang is eternally grateful to her siblings whom she considers living angels.

“Konting bagay na gagawin mo, kung alam mong makatutulong sa kapwa mo, pagiging anghel na ’yun,” she says.

Now financially stable, Pokwang repays her siblings’ kindness one way or the other.

“Lahat sila (kapatid ko), nabigyan ko na ng kanya-kanyang bahay…”

A prophetic angel

Just March last year, Pokwang and her good fried Kris Aquino bumped into a girl in red jacket after attending a mass at The Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag in Pangasinan.

The mysterious girl, who introduced herself as Angel, approached them and told Pokwang that she will meet a blue-eyed foreigner and they will eventually become a couple.

Coincidentally, Pokwang’s new boyfriend is American actor Lee O’Brien who was her leading man in the movie “Edsa Woolworth.” They met two months after Angel’s declaration.

An angelic actor

The newest angel in Pokwang’s life is child actor Marco Masa. They are cast in the upcoming drama series “Nathaniel.” Pokwang plays the role of adoptive mother to the latter’s character, who, according to a release, is “an angel who will be sent back to earth to fulfill a mission to restore man’s faith in God and remind them the goodness that they can find in everyone’s hearts.”

The actress readily accepted the project noting how angels are close to her heart.

Others in the cast of “Nathaniel” are Gerald Anderson, Shaina Magdayao, Isabelle Daza, Benjie Paras, Jason Gainza, Ogie Diaz, Sharlene San Pedro, Jairus Aquino, Yesha Camile, Fourth and Fifth Solomon, and Coney Reyes. The series is directed by Darnel Joy Villaflor and Francis Pasion.

Produced by Dreamscape Entertainment Television, “Nathaniel” premieres on April 20, replacing “Dream Dad.”
