Coco grateful for Black Nazarene experience

His firsthand experience of the Feast of the Black Nazarene has turned Coco Martin into one of its firm believers.

“Naranasan ko kung ano talaga ’yung naranasan ng mga tao habang nagpiyesta sa Quiapo – ihahagis ka, lalangoy ka sa ibabaw ng mga tao, makikipagsiksikan ka hanggang maabot mo ’yung Nazareno,” Martin recounted of being able to the annual festival in 2007, to film a scene for Brillante Mendoza’s independent film “Tirador.”

He described the ordeal as “hinding-hindi ko makakalimutan kasi alam mo ’yung ang hirap sa dami ng tao,” to the point “(na) pwede kang mamatay.”

But rather than being traumatized of the event’s rough conditions, Coco instead found himself thanking the Black Nazarene for the blessings that poured afterwards, particularly in his showbiz career.

“Mula noong araw na ’yun hanggang ngayon, ’yung blessing na dumadating sa akin, alam ko nanggaling doon kasi ’yun ’yung hiniling ko eh. Siguro sa 10 hiniling ko, 15 ’yung binigay niya sa akin. Sobra-sobra pa,” he said.

The critically acclaimed film and TV actor has since made it a point to drop by the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene – where the religious wooden statue is located – when time permits.

“Minsan ako na nahihiya kapag nawawalan na ako ng panahon sa sobrang busy ko sa trabaho na hindi ako nakakapunta o nakakadalaw man lang. Hangga’t maari kapag piyesta ng Quiapo at may pagkakataon ako na dumaan at magsimba, hindi ako pumapatlang kasi gusto kong magpasalamat sa lahat ng pinagkaloob niya sa akin,” he related.

How Martin treats all his showbiz favors: “Pinagtratrabahuan ko kasi alam kong galing sa Kanya ito.”

The Feast of the Black Nazarene will happen tomorrow, Jan. 9.
