Actor Robin Padilla is against the proposed bill seeking to grant Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao a lifetime exemption from paying taxes.
“Hindi dapat mangyari dito, ‘yung magkaroon si Manny ng tax exemption,” Padilla was quoted as saying in a recent report on ABS-CBNnews.com.
He added, “Pag nagkaroon ng tax exemption, magrereklamo ako.”
The “Bad Boy” of Philippine Cinema maintains that if the bill passes muster, it may be disadvantageous to other Filipinos particularly those in the lower-income bracket.
“Ang daming magrereklamo. Unang-una na riyan ang mga taong hirap na hirap sa buhay, ‘tol,” he said.
Asked for his opinion on the P2.2-billion tax evasion case filed against Pacquiao by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Padilla deemed, “Hindi naman hahabulin ang ating ‘Pambansang Kamao,’ ang ating bayani, kung walang katwiran ang BIR.”
That said, Padilla hopes Pacquaio would be able to clear his name in the end.
“Karapatan din ni Manny na ipagtanggol ang sarili niya,” he said.
The proposed Bill 3521, otherwise known as the Pacquiao Act of 2013, was filed by Valenzuela City Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo.
The BIR ranked Padilla 60th on its latest list of top individual celebrity taxpayers for 2012, while Pacquiao placed 36th.
