Forty-four year old Janno Gibbs blames it on songwriter’s block when he stopped writing songs a few years ago. But now he’s back and has been helming original theme songs for GMA Network’s soap operas.

According to him, he felt that his songwriter’s block happened after he came out with “Orig,” his album under GMA Records in 2009. His career’s ninth album, he wrote all the 11 songs in it.

“Parang feeling ko naubos lahat doon,” he quipped.

His creative juices as a songwriter came back when he wrote “Bangon Kaibigan” last December 2013. He was so affected by the devastation that typhoon Yolanda brought the country that he wrote the song.

“Sabi ko kay Ma’am Lilybeth Rasonable, I wrote something na pwedeng gawing parang ‘We Are The World.’ Naapektuhan talaga ako. Na-approve naman at ako ang ginawang in-charge. Ako ang nag-bantay sa mga artista. And for three days, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., nandun ako kasi siyempre iba’t ibang oras ang dating ng mga artista pero it paid off naman,” shared Janno.

The next song he wrote was for “Paraiso Ko’y Ikaw” in which he was also a cast member. He said that after reading the script, he was inspired and began writing a song. He again volunteered the song to be the show’s theme song.

Since then, Janno Gibbs’s been on the roll in creating catchy theme songs for GMA 7. He wrote the song “Sa Iyong Mundo” which was the theme song of “Kambal Sirena” and performed by Julie Anne San Jose and Rita de Guzman.

His latest theme song will be heard on the network’s much awaited teleserye titled “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real” which stars Dingdong Dantes, Lovi Poe and the country’s Diamond Star Maricel Soriano. The title of the song which he also performed with Jaya is “Ako, Ikaw, Siya.”

The other theme song is “My BFF” from his new family-drama-comedy series of the same title. He is reunited with ex-love team partner and ex-girlfriend Manilyn Reynes and the series stars, child actresses Jillian Ward and Mona Louise Rey.

So is Janno taking songwriting seriously?

“It’s fairly a new career for me. Kasi noon naman nagsusulat-sulat na ako. I’ve had hit songs like ‘Fallen’ and others. Pero yung writing theme songs and yung serious songs ngayon pa lang.”

In the past, he already penned the theme songs for “Lupin” and “Codename: Asero” to name a few.

“I’m just happy that GMA 7 is entrusting me with their theme songs needs. Happy ako na hindi nila ako pinababayaan,” he remarked.

With regards to writing themes songs, Janno revealed that it’s easier than simply composing songs.

“You have a lot of given variable like may title ka, may story ka so madaling ma-visualize kung saan tatakbo yung kanta,” he said.

His dilemma about songwriting he revealed is that he doesn’t play any musical instruments.

“Isang handicap ko yun sa pagsulat ng mga kanta. So ang ginagawa ko lahat sa phone. Kakantahin ko lahat, lyrics and music. Pati tono ng mga instruments, kinakanta ko rin para maintindihan ng arranger. Para maintindihan ng gagawa ng music, kakantahin ko rin. Doble hirap sa akin,” he confessed.

If given the opportunity, he would like to put all the theme songs he wrote in a new album and hopefully another concert to follow too.

As actor, Janno is again busy with “My BFF” which he described to be his most serious acting to date. There may be touches of comedy from him, but he stressed that the show is filled with heavy drama. To date, “My BFF” is his second soap opera after “Paraiso Ko’y Ikaw” this year.

“Sa soap opera happy ako. Okay naman ang mga roles ko. Hindi naman ako naghahangad na bida siyempre. Basta markado lang.”
