‘Junior Bake Off’ series puts culinary spotlight on pre-teens

What’s the most surefire way of making a baking competition series a lot more entertaining?

Why, get kids ages 9 to 12 as contestants, of course. That’s exactly what British celebrity chef Aaron Craze did with “Junior Bake-Off”, a show that aims to “separate the good, the batter and the best of Britain’s young bakers.”

Following a format similar to “Junior Master Chef”, the celebrated kiddie cooking competition that also originated in the UK, “Junior Bake Off” puts the cake making, biscuit baking, pastry and bread making skills of 32 young bakers to the ultimate test.

With names like Coco-Nina, Saffron and Freya, among others, these talented contestants make the art of concocting the sweetest desserts look like child’s play.

As they whisk, stir and bake, viewers will discover how chocolate is made, how to make an exploding volcano cupcake or a werewolf in cake form, and even meet the baker who spent over a month making the enormous royal wedding cake for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

As the face of the show, Aaron Craze not only serves as the show’s host, he is also the de facto mentor and guide of the young contestants. He plays the role of both cheerleader and adviser to the kids and helps them out when they face potential baking catastrophes.

Individually and collectively as a team, these kids will undergo a series of tough baking challenges over the course of the show’s 13 episodes as they try to impress the show’s two expert judges revered famous cookery writer and baker Mary Berry and acclaimed master baker, Paul Hollywood.

Each half hour episode will see these kids face two challenges – a technical test and an invention bake where they can let their imaginations run wild. Each challenge has a different theme that can range from wild animals, outer space, sports, chocolate and even Halloween. The most outstanding and mouthwatering creations must also taste as good as they look.

By the time the show reaches its grand finals, only four young bakers will slug it out in a bake-off designed to get the thumbs up of special celebrity guests.

More than a host, Aaron Craze serves as a mentor and guide to the 'Junior Bake-Off' contenders.

As part of its efforts to promote the show here in the Philippines, Discovery Kids recently hosted a baking workshop and mini junior bake-off for children and relative of selected members of the media. The event was held last week at the Shine Bakery and Café at SM Aura, with pastry chefs acting as both mentors and judges.

Of course, the single session was too brief for the kids to learn everything they need to create their own baked masterpieces. Which was also why they were encouraged to watch “Junior Bake Off” when it premieres this Tuesday, June 3, at 5PM with replays every Saturdays at 1:30PM and 6:30PM.
