I enjoyed watching the premiere of “It Takes GUTZ to be a Gutierrez” on E! last Sunday.
Like many, I have excitedly waited for the show for weeks and the Gutierrezes sure didn’t fail me: They are truly a joy to watch.
That said, I just have a few suggestions.
I was befuddled, to say the least, seeing the family matriarch Annabelle Rama all subdued during the first episode.
I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’m pretty sure she didn’t earn her more than 400,000 followers on Twitter being all calm and quiet and peaceful. The Gutierrez family is synonymous with controversy and mostly because of Annabelle and her devil-may-care attitude.
Sure, some would want to know more about Richard being involved in this and that brawl, or where Ruffa and Raymond are partying over the weekend. Still, there are a lot of those who would also want to see more of Annabelle and hear her quotable quotes.
A character I would like featured on the show is Jun Lalin, the family’s publicist. He is quite opinionated and, like Annabelle, fearless.
Jun is also that one person closest to the family who could critique any of them. I remember catching up with the family in Singapore after they finished shooting the SuperStar Virgo cruise episode and Jun repeatedly kept on calling Raymond “maarte” all because he asked him to help carry his leather bag.
I also want to see more of Ruffa and her seemingly ditzy comments. I caught two during the maiden episode: “Politics is so boring” and “Let’s plan my wedding without a groom.” I want more!
I’ve known Ruffa from way back when we both starred in a TV sitcom and she is naturally funny. Her comments could be so outrageous. I remember this conversation we had some years ago:
Ruffa: Giselle, what does your boyfriend Emil do?
Giselle: He works for Caltex.
Ruffa: He’s a gas boy?
Giselle: No Ruffa, he’s a systems Engineer.
Ruffa: Oh (sudden pause), what’s a systems engineer?
Oh, but I loved the premiere the most because it started with a bang, with Richard finally admitting to being a father already. Indeed, after months of speculation, he finally confirmed that he has a love child with Sarah Lahbati.
It was a good move for the family, to able to make such a controversial topic work for them in the context of the show. After all, the secret to earning high TV ratings is to keep on planting bigger and bigger bombs to keep the audiences coming back for more.
So to the Gutierrez family, good luck and may you achieve the status of the Kardashians!
More ‘gutz,’ more glory
