The maiden edition of music talent search “Dreams Get Real: The Search for the Next OPM Star” ended with a three-way tie. Pop-rock band Fifth Dynamics, vocal trio JBK and solo performer Neo Domingo were hailed grand winners during the finals night held at Teatrino, Greenhills on June 30.
According to contest officials, the winners were determined mainly through radio airplay. Apparently the winners each charted strongly in different areas – Domingo in Metro Manila, Fifth Dynamics in Mindanao and northern Luzon, and JBK in the Visayas.
Fifth Dynamics’ Mark Cordovales (vocals), John Peterson Leyva (rhythm guitar), Eljon Nono (lead guitar), Daryl Jay Santos (bass guitar) and Aldrin Condat (drums) are raring to share more of their music to eager listeners.
“Sa dami ng banda ngayon, more on rock talaga sila eh. Rock, puro ingay. So kami, bubuo kami ng song na parang puro love song na slow rock ang dating at pang-masa talaga. ’Yung senti song na may halong kalokohan, ’yun ang Fifth Dynamics kung tawagin,” Cordovales said.
Domingo, for his part, couldn’t contain his emotions as he just originally wanted to release his single, “Pagbigyan Mo Na,” written by Urie Tesorio.
He definitely got more than what he wished for, with the song copping the DJ’s Choice award, voted a favorite among radio jocks across the country.
“Sobra siyang powerful,” Domingo described radio as a medium. “Halos lahat yata ng Pilipino, nasa biyahe ka, nasa work ka, pwedeng makinig ng radyo. So kahit isang beses lang ma-play ’yung kanta mo, marami talagang makakapakinig, at kung maganda naman talaga ’yung kanta mo, maraming magkakagusto, so malaking bagay talaga ’yung mga DJ, lalo na ’yung mga radio stations.”
JBK, composed of Joshua Bulot, Bryan del Rosario and Kim Ordonio, also won Critic’s Choice for their pop ditty “Anong Meron Ka,” likewise penned by Tesorio. They are out to shatter the negative connotation that boy bands are all about looks.
“For me, it depends on the group eh, on how you project, kung pa’no mo mapapanindigan ‘yung grupo niyo. And ’yung challenge for us is to (mapalitan ’yung tingin nila sa boy band)… I guess our edge is that we can sing, perform, and entertain,” del Rosario said.
“Dreams Get Real: The Search for the Next OPM Star,” organized by McJim Classic Leather, awarded each winner cash prizes, gift packs, recording and management contracts, and grants to film and release the music videos of their winning singles.
