Winning big in 2014

We always rejoice when a fellow Pinoy gains praise abroad. Our sense of pride swells with each accolade, knowing that with it comes an acknowledgement of our heritage and talent.

2014 is a landmark year for Pinoy pride, with several of our talented countrymen eking huge attention on the global stage, particularly in the realm of entertainment.

From London to Nuremberg, Singapore to Vietnam, the following gave us reasons to wave Pinoy flag even higher:

RACHELLE ANN GO, MARK BAUTISTA

Mark Bautista was recognized at the 60th Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his portrayal of Ferdinand Marcos in the musical extravaganza “Here Lies Love,” which is currently being staged in London.

Mark also received rave reviews from different international websites for his portrayal of the late president.

Critic Michael Billington of The Guardian noted Mark’s “effective” performance. Paul Taylor of The Independent found the Pinoy’s essay “sexy.”

Rachelle Ann Go, on the other hand, wasnamed Best Featured Actress at the Broadway World UK/West End Awards for her performance as Gigi in “Miss Saigon.”

‘NORTE, HANGGANAN NG KASAYSAYAN’

This Lav Diaz-helmed four-hour opus about crime and punishment has consistently earned accolades locally and internationally.

Aside from winning Best Screenplay (Pinakamahusay na Dulang Pampelikula) at last year’s Gawad Urian Awards, the Filipino drama won Best Film at the Pancevo International Film Fest in Serbia and Audience Award (Feature Film Competition) at the IBAFF Murcia International Film Festival 2014.

“Norte” also received the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Award at the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival.

Variety, an online site considered as one of the most respected sources of information in Hollywood, named it one of the year’s best films under the article titled “Variety Critics Pick the Best Films of 2014 (So Far).”

As if those were not enough, the film was also included in American men’s magazine Details’ “Top 10 Best Under-the-Radar Films of 2014.”

Sarah Geronimo continues to add to her multi-decorated cap this year.

Just recently, she was handpicked to record an English version of the Disney Princess theme song “The Glow” – the first Pinay to do so.

Prior, Sarah already made waves internationally winning the Best Southeast Asia Act plum at the 2014 MTV EMA. Of course, Sarah also won several awards in home turf. She nabbed the Best R&B Recording award for her single “Ikot-Ikot” at the 2014 Awit Awards, Female Performer of the year at the Yahoo Philippines OMG! Award, Favorite Media Soundtrack (“It Takes a Man and a Woman”) and Favorite Artist at the MYX Awards.

She also took home four trophies at the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Box Office Entertainment Awards (GMSSF) including Box Office Queen (“It Takes A Man And A Woman”) and Female Concert Performer of the Year (“Perfect 10”), among others.

Acting wise, Sarah won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role (Musical or Comedy) plum for her performance in “It Takes A Man And A Woman” at the ENPRESS Golden Screen Awards.
