Members of boy band 1:43 aren’t worried that their newfound career as actors could confuse fans who love them for their music.
“Well, 1:43 naman is kinda established as recording artists na with the string of hit songs na nagkaroon sila. Tuloy-tuloy pa rin naman na ang core nila is music so, the next level is to try out acting,” founder and now co-manager Chris Cahilig explained in an interview, adding, “Sayang naman ’yung looks and talents nila.”
The group – composed of Anjo Resureccion, Gold Aquino, Yuki Sakamoto, and new member Yheen Valero – recently signed a co-management contract with Viva Artists Agency (VAA), which according to Chris is “the first step to attaining the big dream of 1:43 to do movies and television.”
He added, “Part of the whole strategy talaga is (for them) to venture into acting, to even make them a stronger group.”
As the boys’ talents are put to the test, it’s possible that one of them would outshine the others. Jealousy among them, however, will never be an issue. They believe the friendship they’ve nurtured can withstand any challenges thrown their way.
At this point, the boys look forward to possibly sharing screen time with Viva artists, the likes of Cristine Reyes, dancer Yassi Pressman and singer Sarah Geronimo.
Having tried a bit of acting via the music video for their hits “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” and “Hayop Sa Ganda,” the members of 1:43 are honing their chops further via four short films directed by Lem Lorca.
“Parang ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll,’ na when put together, isang movie lang. And then meron ding Viva movies na upcoming na ayaw pang sabihin (pero) isasali sila,” Chris shared.
Aside from an upcoming TV project, the group also intends to conquer the Internet with videos they hope would go viral.
Chris is hoping for “full integration” with Viva in the near future, in which he envisioned the boys also signing a recording contract with the company.
New face, same case
According to a release, newcomer Yheen has already familiarized himself with the rest of 1:43. He has recorded two tracks for their upcoming feel-good album, “Tara Na.” Apart from the songs for release on radio this week, he was also able to showcase his rap skills on an electronic dance music (EDM) track.
Yheen took over former member Argee Golding’s place after the latter decided to complete an aviation course in Subic.
Letting go of Argee was a hard decision to make, Chris said. “Kung hindi lang talaga siya magpa-pilot, he would really not leave. He tried also to go around sa schedule, hindi talaga kaya,” he related. “He has to be in Subic for 10 months straight (for training), so sayang. Ang laki ng gastos and everything… pero, you know, I think it’s for the future of the kid din.”
Wouldn’t the addition of another oriental-looking guy encourage people to classify them as a K-pop boy band?
Chris clarified, “Actually, ever since naman we started, the whole idea of 1:43 is a rebellion against K-pop. They’re counter-culture…”
1:43, named Most Promising Performing and Recording Group at the GMMSF 45th Box-Office Entertainment Awards, is also behind the hit song “Ang Saya-Saya,” the official theme song of the GMA-7 sitcom “Ismol Family.”
