ELWOOD TURNS 70: A grand, turning-70 party is being hosted by “Mother” Lily Monteverde for Elwood Perez, a close friend of 40 years.

Believe it or not, Elwood is turning a new leaf on Feb. 4.

The multi-awarded director and Mother Lily go back a long way. She produced many of Elwood’s films in the ’70s and ’80s, most of them blockbusters. Time and again, Mother Lily credits Elwood for having been one of the financial builders of Regal Films.

Of late, Elwood has reinvented himself as a critically-acclaimed maker of two indie films, “Otso” and “Esoterika: Maynila.” He has threatened not to retire anytime soon.

“I sure will miss acting in theater, but I’m enjoying my renewed passion for singing just as well,” the 2013 Gawad Buhay best actor awardee says.

PREMATURE MOTHERHOOD FOR ANGELICA: A mother role even before turning 30?

Herself surprised was Angelica Panganiban, who maintains she was unbelieving when ABS-CBN offered her one such role in the forthcoming remake of “Pangako sa ’Yo.”

After recovering from the initial shock, the former child actress eventually reconsidered and accepted the role of Madam Claudia in the remake of the ’90s toprating soap. The Claudia role, originated by Jean Garcia, was the prime antagonist to Amor Powers, to be played this time by Jodi Sta. Maria. The original, unforgettable Amor was Eula Valdez.

Meeting the press to promote her new film, “That Thing Called Tadhana,” Angelica said she’s quite realistic about where her career is going.

“Du’n din naman pupunta ’yon (sa mother roles), so mabuti na ’yung umpisahan ko na sa isang iconic role,” she explained. Angelica will play mother to Kathryn Bernardo in the soap-in-the-making directed by Rory Quintos.

Playing a similar mother role (to Daniel Padilla) in the same series is Jodi as Amor.

DAMAGE TO RIZAL PARK: It was unfortunate that the Rizal Park, which houses the Quirino Grandstand, was damaged severely when Pope Francis offered mass there recently before a record crowd of 6 million.

Around 30 percent of the park was destroyed, according to park authorities. Aside from plants either uprooted or flattened, also ruined were seven sprinklers, iron gates, plant nets, etc.

In a mad rush to portray their strong faith, Filipinos trampled on public property. They are, ironically, the very same environmental treasures that Pope Francis wants to protect.
