As a seeming reaction to the ongoing brouhaha over the national costume worn by MJ Lastimosa at the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant, popular homegrown designer Rajo Laurel uploaded via Instagram a sketch of his version of the national costume.
In the caption, he said he drew inspiration from “our nations fiestas like the Ati-Atihan.”
The post, which has garnered 3,777 likes as of this writing, elicited mostly positive reviews.
One said, “This hala-bira creation is much more beautiful, sophisticated and relevant to our pagka Pinoy.”
Another commented, “WHOA! I can feel the embroideries from here. *chills* #bravoRajo.”
Yet another kibitzer lauded Rajo for paying tribute to “the richness of our culture,” deeming his take “amazing.”
“Sana magkaisa lahat ng Fashion designers natin dito sa Pilipinas Kung paano nila dadamitan ang mga pambato natin sa mga pageant,” said another.
In a recent interview with a fashion website, Rajo related he is saddened by the whole national costume issue, particularly with the criticism hurled at Filipino designers, whose works are deemed unworthy. He believes the country is home to some of the best designers in the world.
The whole brouhaha started on social media, with some netizens, including former beauty queens and celebrities, airing disappointment over the design of the national costume MJ wore.
GREEN WITH ENVY
MJ is thankful to those who showered her with love and support throughout her stint, particularly the people present on finals night at Doral in Miami.
“Sobrang wala na akong mahihiling pa, the best support system ever,” she said in an interview with “Umagang Kay Ganda.”
MJ revealed how she would tear up every time she sees pictures of Filipinos praying for her. “Napaka-unselfish na magdasal ka para sa ibang tao.”
She added, “’Yung pinakanagagawa ko na lang is ipagdasal ko rin sila na lahat ng mga gusto nila sa buhay, ma-grant din ni Lord sa kanila. Sobrang laking tulong na pinagdadasal nila ako. Feeling ko kaya gumagaan ’yung aura ko is dahil sa prayers, na-guide talaga ako.”
The North Cotabato native shared how envious her co-candidates were of the support she received.
“Sabi nila sana daw sa kanila ganun din,” she related.
