After a week of speculations, TV host-actress Toni Gonzaga, 31, and director Paul Soriano, 33, finally revealed they have taken the next step in their relationship.
Appearing on “The Buzz,” Sunday, the longtime couple announced that they are engaged and plan to marry this year.
“It’s been what, seven and a half years, right? And you know she’s been such a great part of my life, the best blessing I’ve ever received, and I want to spend the rest of my life with her,” Paul said.
The “very simple” proposal happened on Jan. 21 at the Gonzaga home in Rizal, just after midnight. The family had just celebrated Toni’s birthday with a dinner and she and sister Alex were about to sleep.
Paul arrived and talked to Toni’s parents, Bonoy and Pinty. “I showed them the ring. I said, ‘Do you mind po if I propose to Toni?’ And the mom was like, ‘Oh, it’s about time.’ And the dad looks at me and said, ‘Why are you asking me? Ask her,’” he shared.
Taking that as blessing, Paul faced Toni’s emotional family and recounted telling them, “I’m not here to take her away from you. I’m actually here to join you, if that’s possible.”
He knelt and was “not even done halfway through the question” when Toni said yes.
“He proved to me that true love waits. And he really waited for me, kaya sabi ko, if I become his wife, hindi na siya number three priority,” Toni said, noting how God, family and career always used to come first. “I will make sure that he will be my only priority and everything else is secondary na lang.”
She’s thankful to Paul “for enduring everything, for the patience, for understanding and thank you very much for honoring my parents.”
Sister’s agony
Toni revealed that Alex, 27, seemed “pinaka-hirap sa lahat” accepting the turn of events. She recalled her sister sulking during Paul’s proposal.
“’Paglabas na ni Catherine (sa kwarto), sumimangot na siya. Habang nagsasalita na (si Paul), sabi ni Catherine, ‘Ay hindi, ay hindi!’ Tapos tumakbo si Alex so hindi siya (Paul) natapos magsalita, hinabol pa (ni Paul), ‘Catherine, go back!’ Sabi ni Alex, ‘Ayaw ko! Ayaw ko ’yan!’ Ume-eksena pa si Alex.”
The scenario apparently happened twice until their dad told Alex not to run off again.
Still, her sister’s reaction is understandable to Toni. They are so close that their rooms don’t only share a connecting door, “our souls are so connected to each other,” she said of Alex.
She explained, “Bago pa ako masaktan, nasasaktan na si Alex for me, bago pa ako magsalita, siya ’yung unang magsasalita for me. And lagi niyang sinasabi, ‘’Pag kinasal ka na tapos may bahay na kayo, may kwarto ako?’ Sabi ko, ‘Oo, Catherine, anytime. And hindi ako mawawala sa buhay mo. May madadagdag pa nga sa buhay mo – si Paul ’yun.’”
Toni believes, though, that her sister is now “opening up her wings and flying on her own,” and no longer needs much of her help.
“Buong day pinagu-usapan namin, bakit daw single siya. Sabi ko, ‘Makakahanap ka rin ng Direk Paul, maghintay ka lang, ’wag kang magmamadli,” Toni shared.
For her part, Alex later said on Instagram, “I will have a BROTHER!! I’m medyo saaad coz may kahati na ako sa ate.” Still, she “can never think of anyone more deserving and suitable for my sister” than Paul.
Honoring parents
During the interview, the couple recalled how strict Toni’s parents were with them but for that she is grateful.
As message to her father, she said, “Talagang ’yung values at saka ’yung faith na in-instil mo sa akin na pinaglabanan ko nu’ng bata ako talaga, na hindi ko maintindihan ang tinuturo mo sa akin, bakit ganon ka. Nagpapasalamat ako dahil naalagaan mo ako sa ganong paraan kasi the way Paul respects me and treats me, ’yun ay dahil sa ginagawa mo. You may not have given us everything that we wanted when we were growing up, but you provided us everything we needed.”
Despite a lot of “disagreements,” Paul believes that “if you love someone with all your heart and if it’s true love, you will also obey their parents and their family and respect them no matter what.”
