Thousands of fans screamed, cheered and had a night of fun as four K-pop groups performed at the “Best of Best in the Philippines” concert held at the Philippine Arena in Santa Maria, Bulacan on April 12.
Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, BTOB and Red Velvet got the crowd on their feet as they performed their hit songs coupled with unique choreography.
The concert, presented by Globe and Star World, was the inaugural K-pop event at the Philippine Arena, which can accommodate 55,000 people.
“We missed all of you cheering for us in the Philippines,” Super Junior’s leader Leeteuk told the crowd.
Girls’ Generation said, “It’s been a while since we’ve been to Manila and we’re so happy to be here.”
RED VELVET
Rookie girl group Red Velvet, composed of Irene, Joy, Seulgi, Wendy and Yeri, opened the concert with their hit song “Ice Cream Cake,” which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s World Albums chart and won them their first TV music show award.
“It’s our first time here in the Philippines. The energy is so intense. We’re so surprised,” Red Velvet told the audience.
Red Velvet followed the number with “Somethin Kinda Crazy,” “Candy,” and “Happiness.” The group debuted last August.
BTOB
Seven-member boy band BTOB (Born To Beat), composed of Eunkwang, Minhyuk, Sungjae, Changsub, Hyun-sik, Peniel and Il-hoon, came next and opened their set with their 2013 track “Thriller.”
This was followed by “Beep Beep,” “2nd Confession,” “Wow,” “Irresistible Lips” and “Winter’s Tale.”
It was BTOB’s second visit to Manila since performing in the Dream K-pop Fantasy Concert 2 in February last year.
GIRLS’ GENERATION
Girls’ Generation, now with eight members Taeyeon, Seohyun, Tiffany, Yuri, Yoona, Sunny, Sooyoung and Hyoyeon, sang “Mr. Taxi,” “Gennie,” “Gee,” “Hoot,” “Mr.Mr.” “Complete” and “Kissing You.”
“It’s been so long. How have you been?” Tiffany asked the crowd. They told the fans that they’ll be back to perform again in the country.
“We love you, Philippines,” they said.
SUPER JUNIOR
Super Junior came with eight members: Leeteuk, Siwon, Donghae, Kyuhyun, Eunhyuk, Heechul, Ryeowook and Kangin.
“We’ll make sure that you’ll have a great time tonight,” said Donghae.
The group performed “Mr. Simple,” “Shirt,” “This Is Love,” “Evanesce” and “Mamacita” while D&E’s Donghae and Eunhyuk sang “Oppa Oppa” and Kyuhyun had his “At Gwanghwamun” solo spot.
The thousands of fans who attended the concert were thrilled to see the K-pop stars.
It was the first time that high school student Isa Rolda watched a K-pop concert and said her favorite was Super Junior.
“I really enjoyed not only when they sang and danced but also when they did the break dance and kept shouting ‘Mabuhay,’” she said.
PRE-CONCERT FUN FOR FANS
Before the concert, thousands of fans enjoyed activity booths outside the arena.
The booths featured the KPOParazzi where fans had their photos taken; Style booth where hairstylists and makeup artists dolled up fans; OHH! Playbooth that let fans create their own K-pop Spotify playlist; and Upstage that allowed fans to sing their favorite K-pop songs using the Musixmatch app.
“The Best of Best” was part of Globe Telecom’s big summer campaign to let customers experience the wonderful world of music.
“Globe Prepaid is all about bringing wonderful experiences to our customers, may it be through our innovative services and engaging events,” said Raymond Policarpio, Globe Prepaid Portfolio and Brand Management Head.
“We also want to extend the KPOP phenomenon to our prepaid customers by offering them the best music experience with Spotify when they register to our GoSurf promos. With Spotify, they can choose from over 30 million songs so they can listen to their favorite KPOP tunes wherever and whenever they want,” he added.
