Andrea Torres has gotten a little familiar with Cambodia from her last few visits to the country with perennial onscreen partner Mikael Daez. In fact, the two have gone a little native, trying a local delicacy thatcan make any arachnophobe catatonic with fear.
“Nag-try kami ng tarantula ni Mikael,” she brightly shared at a recent presscon. “’Yung lasa niya parang adobo. Parang may white sa loob. Tapos ramdam mo ’yung mga paa niya kapag kinain mo.”
Andrea and Mikael are set to make more Cambodian memories as the two fly off to Phnom Penh on April 17 to shoot the TV series “Blood In Dispute,” the first-ever project produced by GMA-7 in partnership with a foreign TV station, Cambodia Television Network (CTN).
“Kinuha nalang po nila kami based du’n sa TV series na pinalabas sa bansa nila,” she said, noting they didn’t have to audition.
Last year, “Sana Ikaw Na Nga” and “With A Smile” were shown in Cambodia. These led to trips there in the same year to promote the shows. “Nagulat kami sa reaction nila kasi parang parehas sila ng fans sa Philippines. Hindi namin in-expect na ganu’n ka-warm ang pagtanggap nila,” she said.
According to the release, “Blood In Dispute” sees Mikael’s character leaving the country and his girlfriend (Andrea) for Cambodia to pursue a career in Bokator, said to be the oldest fighting system in Cambodia and earliest systematized Khmer martial art. The series is helmed by Canadian director Ken Simpson and is scheduled to premiere on GMA and CTN this year.
Birthday plans
With a successful career and a rosy personal life, Andrea’s only wish for her 25th birthday on May 4 is: “More projects and dere-derecho lang talaga na career and sana makumpleto ’yung family ko. ’Yung isa ko kasing kuya nasa Australia. Mga three to four years na siyang andu’n,” she said.
Skipping a birthday celebration in favor of shooting “Blood In Dispute,” she is nevertheless happy she gets to mark her special day in Cambodia with her mom.
“Kailangan tapusin ko muna ’tong series para makapasyal nang konti du’n,” she said.
Thankful for the opportunities given to her by the Kapuso Network, she added, “Halos every year naman ng birthday ko eh, may work ako kaya feeling ko blessing lang talaga ’tong dumadating sa akin.”
No beauty queen
With her height and classic mestiza looks, Andrea does have beauty queen potential. Still, showbiz remains her priority.
“Wala po akong balak (sumali sa pageants) at bawal din po ata ako sumali sa Binibining Pilipinas kasi naging cover ako sa FHM,” she said, referring to the magazine’s December 2014 issue. “Pero pwede ata ako sa Miss World.”
She added, “Wala sa personality ko… basta parang iba ’yung aura nila eh. Feeling ko hindi ko keri.”
No competition
If her interest in joining beauty pageants is nil, so is her desire to compete with Miss World 2013 Megan Young, who is being romantically linked to Mikael. The beauty queen returns to showbiz after inking a one-year exclusive contract with GMA Network.
“Sa akin naman kasi okay lang. ’Di ko naman inaangkin si Mikael. Alam ko naman kasi na darating ’yung time na paghihiwalayin rin kami sa love team,” she said.
Should the time come, Andrea hopes to work with actors Alden Richards, Tom Rodriguez and Dennis Trillo. “Feeling ko kasi kapag sila ’yung naka-partner ko madadamay ako sa kagalingan nila. Magle-level up ako at may matutunan akong bagong techniques,” she said. (With report from Jojo P. Panaligan)
