Breakup rumors hound Louise, Enzo anew

enzo

Louise delos Reyes (File)

Another showbiz couple has purportedly called it quits: Kapuso actors Louise delos Reyes and Enzo Pineda.

If rumors are true, this would be the second breakup for the two, after having mutually decided to split up for the first time in March last year.

It was Enzo who made public their reconciliation the following September.

The recent spate of rumors has shed some unwanted light on Aljur Abrenica, Louise’s leading man on the TV series “Kambal Sirena,” who was tagged as the supposed third party responsible for the split.

Rumors of a burgeoning love affair between Louise and Aljur started online, with a report about the two supposedly sighted being cozy in an event in Eastwood and another in Subic, Olongapo, supposedly both on March 27.

Louise has refuted the allegations, telling PEP, “Wala naman po, hindi.”

That said, she admitted to being physically attracted to Aljur, noting, “Guwapo siya.”

“Kasi ako ha personally, isa din sa mga weakness ko talaga mga Moreno. Hindi ako maka-tisoy kasi, ako, more on Asian, moreno, mga ganun,” the 20-year-old actress added.

She went on to assure her public that she and Enzo are okay.

“As of now, I’m secure and I’m happy,” she said, maintaining that Enzo feels the same way.

They’re both so secure that they could now focus on their work. As Louise said, “Siguro po dumating na rin kami sa point na ganun, ‘yung security nandun na. Ang focus talaga namin ngayon is trabaho, kaya parang okay na lahat ng aspects.

“For the past two years, I think ‘yung focus ko sa work hindi siya ganun ka-solid, since I have my boyfriend, my family… so ngayon it’s time for me to focus on my work,” she added.

Asked if Enzo is husband material, Louise quipped, “He is naman… pero hindi pa ‘yon ang focus ko.”

Dingdong Dantes on marrying Marian Rivera: ‘In God’s time’ (file)

Dingdong Dantes is still on a high after finally earned a diploma from West Negros University (WNU), where he took up BS Business Administration major in Marketing.

“Ang sarap ng pakiramdam until now,” he told Bulletin Entertainment in a recent interview.

Pointing to his diploma, he added, “’Yun ’yung nag-e-embody ng word na certification – it validates, it certifies that all your hard work, all the learning and the wisdom na na-gain mo throughout those years, ay nakapaloob dun sa kapirasong papel na ’yon.”

It took him some eight years to finish school but Dingdong was already able to put up several businesses along the way, notably an auto dealership and a KTV bar.

“Para sa akin, nabaliktad eh. Kumbaga, I did the application first before the actual theory. I have products now that I put (up) on my own, through my business and stuff, so ’yun ang ginamit ko na pag-present sa class ko,” he shared.

Dingdong admitted, however, that he is still a “work in progress.”

“’Yung natutunan ko sa classroom, sa lessons ko, sa professors ko, ina-apply ko ngayon sa mga maling ginawa ko sa mga businesses ko. Kahit na sabihin nating nauna ’yung application before the theory, pwede pa din siyang baguhin,” he said.

Knowing his priorities

Dingdong is planning to pursue further studies in the future. “I’m just exploring my options for, possibly, a master’s degree. But hindi pa ngayon. Magpapahinga muna ako nang konti,” he quipped.

As advice to others who are still dreaming of earning their diplomas, he said, “Kailangan malaman muna nila kung priority nila ’yun (education). Kasi ako, I believe that it really has to be a priority especially if you are capable and you are able, kung posible naman siya. Kasi it is really one of the most powerful tools one can use to explore the world, be it artist ka man, negosyante ka man… kahit saan ka pa sumabak, kung well equipped ka, kahit papaano, may mararating ka.”

As to incessant questions concerning marriage, Dingdong simply laughed and said, “In God’s time.”

“I’ve been ready since I’m 25, but you have to be emotionally ready before putting yourself (through) a lifetime commitment,” he explained, dismissing recent reports of his alleged engagement to girlfriend Marian Rivera.

Getting to know Maricel Soriano

Dingdong will soon be busy with his upcoming soap, “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real.”

“I’m so excited to work with a stellar cast headed of course by Ms. Maricel Soriano and Lovi Poe. I’m so honored to work with them,” he expressed.

Although admittedly intimidated by the Diamond Star at first, but was quick to add, “Ongoing adjustments ’yan and maganda naman na may ganun. It’s not good naman na instantly parang feeling close ako agad sa kanya.”

According to Dingdong, taping for “Ang Dalawang Mrs. Real” might start soon, making it impossible for him to plan a vacation with Marian.

Spider-Man joins Earth Hour

Andrew Mayne combines magic and mischief in new Lifetime series

Andrew Mayne.

Magician Andrew Mayne uses his antagonistic sense of humor to create an arsenal of illusions in helping someone exact revenge on a friend or family member who has done them wrong.

But with a charming demeanor that recalls Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Saget and fellow illusionist David Copperfield, he somehow stays incredibly likeable despite his politically incorrect edge.

Thanks to his knack for both magic and mischief, it comes as no surprise that Andrew headlines a new show for the Lifetime network called “Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne”.

In a recent interview with InterAksyon and other Asian media, Andrew insists that the title of the series is a misnomer.

“I think you should trust me, I’m totally trustworthy. You trust me to have a good time, you trust me to have fun. I don’t think you should trust that title. I think ‘Don’t Trust Me’ is ironic. Sure, sometimes I borrow things and I don’t give them back, sometimes I make things blow up even if you don’t want that to have happen. But, face it, you got to take your chances,” he quipped.

Andrew said what makes his show different from other similar series about magic is about “trying to push magic in a different area”.

“Magic is a way to tell stories and I wanted to tell different kinds of stories and in this case, how I can use magic to help people. A big part of the show is trying to play pranks on people but the heart of the show is using it to make a difference,” he pointed out.

But while Andrew concedes that magic is largely illusion, the idea of using it “to have a real effect in this world” is something that very much appealed to him.

“In this case, somebody who loves somebody else but they’re just not listening, maybe they’re wasting their time on the phone or they’re always obsessing over their car and doing something to call attention to that and say hey, you need to, you need to pay attention to what this person is trying to say and people at home, I think, can relate to that.”

For Andrew, playing pranks is a surefire way to get someone’s attention, not to mention it’s also a fun twist on performing magic.

“I’ve always been a prankster. My family played pranks when I was growing up, my brother and I played pranks at each other and I had an interest in magic. You know, it’s one thing about having you pick a card and I make the card appear somewhere else, but what if I do that with your wedding ring? I make your wedding ring appear attached to a fence and that’s a really cool trick.”

Asked how he feels about being compared to other magicians, especially Criss Angel who has been a staple of primetime television more than any other magician in history, Andrew said there’s no rivalry between them.

“I know Criss, and he is a very hardworking guy. He’s been out there longer than I have and anytime my name gets mentioned with somebody who’s been working that hard and who’s achieved that much success, I can only be flattered,” he declared.

Aside from Criss Angel, Andrew also cites several other magicians as inspirations.

“David Copperfield is impressive. When I was a teenager, I worked with him in one of his TV specials and I saw how disciplined he is. I saw the same kind of perfectionism in somebody had taken it into magic, which very few people did,” he revealed.

Andrew Mayne performs a trick in 'Don't Trust Andrew Mayne'.

“There’s also David Blaine. When he first came into the scene and introduced street magic At first I didn’t, I couldn’t see, it was hard for me to appreciate to it. When I thought about it and the more I realized how much he’s changed magic forever.”

Asked if he ever got a chance to meet or work with Filipino magicians, Andrew happily revealed that he’s always had very intelligent Filipino people to mentor and help him.

“My head magic consultant Enrico Dela Vega is actually Filipino, so there’s a big influence in the show. He is an amazing magician who has worked with Cyril Takayama, who in turn is a great magician in his own right. He was actually my go-to guy who makes sure that everything worked. His family is from the Philippines. Also, my judo teacher was from the Philippines,” he confessed.

And yes, Andrew would love to visit the country and perform here at some point. For now, his fans would have to settle with watching him in the comforts of their own home. He assures everyone that there’s a lot of fun to be had in the 13 episodes of what is hopefully only the first season of “Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne”.

“I don’t take myself too seriously. I’m not out to prove to the world that I’m the best magician in the world. Think of me as your friend that you bring to a party and plays tricks on everybody. And know that I’m not a mean person, I’m really not, sometimes I make people squirm but I make sure that everybody leaves happy and glad with the experience.”

“Don’t Trust Andrew Mayne” premieres this Tuesday, April Fools Day, at 10:10PM on the Lifetime Network.

Singer-producer Pharrell Williams to join NBC show ‘The Voice’

Pharrell Wiliams (Reuters)

(Reuters) – Pharrell Williams, the R&B singer of the hit song “Happy” and a music producer, will join NBC’s singing contest “The Voice” as a coach for its seventh season in the fall, the network said on Monday.

Williams, 40, will join the show’s fall jury panel replacing longtime judge Cee Lo Green, who left the show for other ventures with the Comcast Corp-owned network.

Williams is expected to join country singer Blake Shelton, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and pop singer Christina Aguilera on the season seven panel.

The producer has seen his star rise in the past year as a performer on Robin Thicke’s smash hit “Blurred Lines” and Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning disco track “Get Lucky.” Williams was also nominated for an Oscar for “Happy,” the lead song from the “Despicable Me 2″ animated film on which he composed the music.

Williams has also carved out a niche as an arbiter of urban style, with such fashions as a tuxedo with shorts at this year’s Oscars and a giant brown hat at the Grammys.

“The Voice,” which averages about 13.8 million viewers per episode, has outpaced its Fox rival “American Idol” this season by about 3 million viewers per episode.

The show’s celebrity panel of judges has been credited with helping it rise in the ratings against “American Idol.” It is also considered a top spot within the music industry to promote songs, such as Maroon 5 and Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger,” that became a hit in 2011 after the singers performed it on the show.

The spring panel consists of Shelton and Levine with R&B singer Usher and Colombian pop singer Shakira.

Engaged Johnny Depp shows off ‘chick’s ring’

engagement

Johnny Depp (AP)

BEIJING (AP) — Johnny Depp showed off a diamond engagement ring that he called a “chick’s ring” on Monday — indirectly confirming rumors of his engagement to actress Amber Heard.

Asked whether he was engaged, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star replied: “The fact that I’m wearing a chick’s ring on my finger is probably a dead giveaway. Not very subtle.” He laughed as he lifted up his left hand and displayed a single diamond on a band around his ring finger.

His comments follow months of unconfirmed reports of his engagement to actress Heard, 27, who starred alongside Kevin Costner in “3 Days to Kill” released in the U.S. earlier this year.

Depp and Heard starred together in “The Rum Diary,” filmed in Puerto Rico in 2009.

In 2012, Depp split with his partner of 14 years, French model-singer Vanessa Paradis. They have two children.

In a trademark off-the-wall comment, Depp said: “I think that I would be better at making women’s shoes than I would be at wedding planning, I can’t plan anything. I’m really bad at that stuff.”

The 50-year-old actor was in Beijing to promote his new movie “Transcendence.” Depp plays a terminally ill scientist who downloads his mind into a computer in the sci-fi drama that asks: What if we could upload a human mind into a computer? It also stars Rebecca Hall as Depp’s wife and Morgan Freeman.

“The technology that exists within the film, what I find most fascinating is that a lot of it exists already and by all accounts from scholars and professors and scientists that species of technology is not far away, that kind of artificial intelligence,” said Depp in an interview.

“It’s one of those films that one person is forced to make a choice in an instant, when your loved one is dying and you have a split-second decision if you have the ability to upload their consciousness into a computer, would you do that? It’s quite a strange decision to make but for love I think we would all do it.”

“Transcendence” comes out in China on April 18 — the same day as the U.S. release. China is the only country currently where “Transcendence” will be showing in 3-D — a format popular with Chinese audiences.

China is also the only international stop Depp is making as part of the movie’s promotion tour, illustrating the growing attention Hollywood is paying to the country that now has the world’s second-biggest box office after the United States.

Last Monday, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson promoted “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in Beijing, followed the next day by “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx.

“With regard to Hollywood, China is quite a large market, certainly,” said Depp, who was on his first visit to China. “I think there will be a lot more films coming here, a lot more people coming here and continuing the trend.”

Copyright suit against Bieber, Usher dismissed

jb usher

Justin Bieber and Usher (AP)

NORFOLK, Virginia (AP) — A judge has dismissed a $10 million lawsuit that claimed Justin Bieber and Usher copied parts of a song written by two Virginia songwriters.

U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen ruled Friday that the song, “Somebody to Love,” isn’t intrinsically similar to a song by the same name that Bieber and Usher performed.

Devin Copeland and Maerio Overton filed the lawsuit in 2013 in U.S. District Court in Norfolk. The lawsuit claimed that the song performed by Bieber and Usher contains numerous lyrical and stylistic similarities to their copyrighted song.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1fGOuis) newspaper reports that the judge listened to both songs at a hearing earlier this month.

Allen’s ruling says a reasonable juror couldn’t conclude that a member of the public would construe the songs’ aesthetic appeal as being similar.

New music coming from Michael Jackson estate

Michael Jackson (AP)

Michael Jackson (AP)

NEW YORK (AP) — A new posthumous album of previously unreleased Michael Jackson music comes out May 13.

Epic Records and the late pop singer’s estate will release “Xscape,” an album of eight new tracks that have been updated musically by producers including Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Jerome “Jroc” Harmon and John McClain.

Executive producer L.A. Reid refers to the work as “contemporizing” in a Monday news release. A deluxe version will include the original recordings.

Few details were shared Monday, but Reid did say the album is named for a track produced by Jackson and Jerkins, then later updated by Jerkins. It’s the only song on the album where the original producer freshened the music.

Jackson died in June 2009 at 50 from a lethal dose of an anesthetic.

Have Kim and Maja reconciled?

Majakim

Maja and Kim

It seems that actresses and former bestfriends Maja Salvador and Kim Chiu have buried the hatchet.

On Sunday, showbiz writer Ogie Diaz tweeted about the supposed reconciliation between the two Kapamilya stars during Dreamscape’s thanksgiving party.

“Yehey! Bati na pala sina @dprincessmaja at @prinsesachinita last week. Nagkita sila at nagkatsikahan na. #SarapNgFeeling,” he wrote.

The post has been retweeted 299 times and favorited 377 times as of this writing.

Even actor Gerald Anderson – Maja’s current and Kim’s ex-boyfriend – has also made peace with the latter, claimed Ogie in another post.

“Usap na din sina gerald at @prinsesachinita kanina. Nagbibiruan pa nga sila. All’s well that ends well. ‘Sarap ng walang kaaway!’ –kim,” he tweeted shortly.

Dreamscape executive Eric John Salut seems to have seconded the hints that Maja and Kim are now in good terms, tweeting, “Finally, they have reconciled. Thank you LORD. Bless them more Oh LORD,” without making any direct reference.

He also posted on Instagram a photo of Gerald posing with Kim’s older sister, Kam Chiu, and Dreamscape head Deo Endrinal.

The rift allegedly began when Gerald confirmed being in a relationship with Maja early last year.

Maja has expressed optimism to making amends with Kim in a recent interview, while the love team “Kimerald” was recently reunited in a pictorial last February.

New Michael Jackson album to feature 8 unreleased songs

Michael Jackson. (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES | Eight previously unreleased songs by the late Michael Jackson will be part of a new album, “Xscape,” the singer’s estate and Sony Music Entertainment’s Epic Records said on Monday.

The songs were unearthed from Jackson’s archive of recorded material by L.A. Reid, the chairman and chief executive of Epic Records. “Xscape” will be released on May 13.

The new album is the latest venture for Jackson’s estate to capitalize on the posthumous popularity of the King of Pop.

Jackson died in 2009 at age 50 in Los Angeles from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol given to him by his personal physician while he was rehearsing for a series of 50 comeback concerts in London.

The unreleased tracks have been re-produced by the likes of present-day hitmakers Jerome “Jroc” Harmon, who has helped produce hits for Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, and Norwegian duo Tor Hermansen and Mikkel Eriksen, who work under the name Stargate and have produced hits for Rihanna and Selena Gomez.

Top pop producers Rodney Jerkins and John McClain were also enlisted to make the songs sound contemporary in style, Reid said.

One of the songs is called “Xscape,” which was taken for the album title to continue Jackson’s tradition of using a one-word song title on the album for its name, Reid said.

The age of the material or the remaining song names have yet to be released. Hip hop and pop producer Timbaland will be executive producer of the album.

Pharrell Williams to replace Cee Lo Green on ‘The Voice’

LOS ANGELES | Pharrell Williams, the R&B singer of the hit song “Happy” and a music producer, will join NBC’s singing contest “The Voice” as a coach for its seventh season in the fall, the network said on Monday.

Elton John to marry longtime partner

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Pop icon Elton John says he will tie the knot with partner David Furnish now that his native Britain has legalized gay marriage.

The top-selling artist told NBC’s “Today” show that “we’ll do it very quietly.”

“But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion,” John added.

The couple, who have two children together, entered into a civil partnership in 2005.

A historic law legalizing same-sex marriage took effect in England and Wales on Saturday, the final stage in the long fight for legal equality for gays and lesbians.

Civil partnerships have been legal there since 2005.

“I’m very proud of Britain and the laws that we’ve seen come into existence since we’ve been together,” John said in excerpts of the interview set to air Monday.

“For this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother to get married.’ We will get married.”

Furnish told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in a separate interview that an intimate ceremony would take place in May.

“I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses,” the publication quoted him as saying.

Pia Wurtzbach hints she’s done with pageants after shocking loss in Bb. Pilipinas

Hours after her shocking loss in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant where she was widely considered a shoo-in for one of its five crowns, Pia Wurtzbach took to social media to thank her supporters and hint that her days as a beauty pageant contestant may be over.

“GRATEFUL that I was able to experience what it’s like to be a part of the pageant world. When I placed 1st RU last year, I gave all my time, effort & love to my job. I had so much fun! I just tried again because I wanted to know of this was really meant for me. But how do you know if you don’t take chances, right? I’m glad I made it this far. No doubt that I learned so much from it. I’m a better person now than I was a year ago. Thank you to my mentors from Aces & Queens for teaching me everything I know & transforming me! & to my supporters for pushing me & encouraging me. THANK YOU!! Time to turn the page & move on to a new chapter!” went her latest post on Instagram.

Five hours before that, the 24-year-old Filipino-German from Cagayan de Oro City, who is also a professional chef and a former contract artist of Star Magic, posted the word “Maktub” on her Twitter account. Maktub is an Arabic word which means “it is written”.

Pia had been a heavy favorite right from the onset of the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 with the introduction of the 40 candidates last January 28. With every pre-pageant event, she consistently figured among everyone’s top choices, including final fearless forecasts that had her winning one of the five titles up for grabs.

Her supporters blamed her loss on judge Senator Sonny Angara, who opted to ask his question in Tagalog which elicited a reply in the same language from Pia. The Tagalog exchange between the two prompted fans to believe that it alienated the foreign judges in the pageant, namely reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler, Sofitel Hotel general manager Adam Laker, US Consul Officer William Christopher and Mexico’s Ambassador to the Philippines Julio Camarena Villasenor.

But in his own tweets, Angara said he had explained Pia’s answer to Isler and Camarena, who were both impressed. Angara also revealed that in the final vote, Pia was tied for 6th or 7th place so at best, she could have only duplicated her runner-up feat last year.

Just the same, it was obvious from the get-go that Pia was determined to win. In a pre-pageant interview with InterAksyon when the 40 candidates visited the PLDT Home offices, Pia sounded assured and confident and said that she’s having a much easier time in this year’s competition compared to last year when she finished 1st runner-up.

“Finally, I’m able to let the real me out. Hindi na masyadong robotic na pageant conscious, mas natural na talaga,” she declared.

She also said that she learned a lot from the previous title holders that she often appeared with in public during their reign.

“Iba-iba sila ng personality. With Mutya (Datul), she’s very carefree and natural. Cindy (Miranda) is a perfectionist so that’s what I learned from her. Ara (Arida) is also very carefree. And she shines because she doesn’t overthink while Bea is very articulate especially so I got a lot of pointers from each one,” she noted.

Pia could learn one more thing from newly crowned Miss Universe-Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa: perseverance.

Lastimosa continued to work hard and kept joining Bb. Pilipinas until she finally won the big crown that she has always been shooting for on her third attempt.

Pia’s fans believe that like MJ, she should not yet give up on her dreams. At 24, she is still qualified to join Bb. Pilipinas up to two more times before she reaches the age limit of 26.

Fans are likewise urging her to join this year’s Miss World Philippines where she could be a worthy successor to Megan Young. Then there’s also Mutya ng Pilipinas and Miss Philippines Earth where there are also several titles up for grabs.

4Minute wins first comeback trophy

4Minute showing their first comeback trophy (Twitter)

K-pop quintet 4Minute notched their first TV music chart triumph since making their comeback with their new mini-album “4Minute World,” which contains five tracks including the lead single “Whatcha Doin’ Today.”

The girl group performed the title track on SBS “Inkigayo” on March 30, competing with other artists including CNBLUE, Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, Orange Caramel, Boys Republic and JJCC.

In the end, 4Minute won with 8,928 points, edging out Girls’ Generation, which got 8,772 points and 2NE1, which had 7,648 points.

4Minute said making a comeback is never easy considering the competition.

“To be honest, it’s never been easy. We always comeback when the house is full of other singers. The same goes for this album (laughter). You can’t release an album if you’re searching for the right timing. We

subconsciously knew that we would face hard competition no matter when we made our comeback,” said member SoHyun, according to a report on EnewsWorld and Newsen.com.

Hyuna said they released their album when other groups made their comeback.

“The title song was completed awhile back. But since there is right timing, we decided to wait out a little, but then all these awesome groups made their comeback. So we decided to come back, because we’ll

never be able to if we waited for the right timing. We thought that if it’s a good song and we’re confident about it, then many people will like our song,” she said.

The girl group said they are proud of “4Minute World” since they all participated in making the album.

“It’s our comeback in a year. We feel more attached to this album since we participated in everything, including the jacket photo, music video and choreography. I think the album expresses the members’ colors well since we participated in this album the most,” they said.

They added that the new album shows a new side of 4Minute.

“Thanks to the success of our last album, the company was very supportive of us and took in our requests. This album is an extension to the last one, but it also shows new sides of us. The stage is arranged differently and we felt like we were going down the runway during practice. The range of movement of bigger and we have more number of dancers too. I think you’ll enjoy watching the different stage arrangements,” 4Minute said.

Marian Rivera named Ambassador for Women and Children with Disabilities

Marian Rivera speaks at a forum at the House of Representatives on Monday after she was named Ambassador Women and Children with Disabilities. (Lira Fernandez/InterAksyon)

MANILA, Philippines | Television actress Marian Rivera is lending her star power to promote the rights of women and children with disabilities in the country.

Rivera said the public and the government should be sensitive to their condition and provide them with the needed support so that they can enjoy the same access to education, livelihood, health and social activities.

“Kung anuman po ang magagawa ko sa inyo, gagawin ko sa abot ng aking makakaya,” she said in a forum at the House of Representatives where she was named Ambassador for Women and Children with Disabilities.

In 2009, Rivera said she wore arm crutches in 140 episodes of the fantasy series “Darna” when she portrayed the role of the lead character, a crippled teenager named Narda who turns into a superheroine with the aid of a magical stone.

“Hindi ko po lubos maisip na ina-acting ko lang iyon sa isang araw. Aaminin ko po na nahihirapan talaga ako. So ngayon po na nakikinig ako sa inyo, ano pa kaya yung mga totoong hinaharap ito araw-araw o kaya panghabanmbuhay? Napakahirap,” she said.

The actress said she also recently played the role of a sister of someone with Down Syndrome, who experienced discrimination.

She said that a person’s disability should not be the basis of judging his character, stressing that a number of women with disability emerged successful in their career.

“I did some research and found out that Jessica Cox, who is armless, is a licensed pilot. And there’s Rosel Ambubuyog, who graduated summa cum laude from Ateneo despite being blind,” she added.

Rivera said she had also been exposed to people with mental illness during her on-the-job training in college. She finished a course in Psychology at the De La Salle University – Dasmarinas in Cavite.

Carmen Zubiaga, acting executive director of the National Council on Disability Affairs, said they chose Rivera as ambassador because they believed the roles she had played in the past made her aware and sympathetic to the plight of women and children with disabilities.

“Marian can help if she urges her fellow actors and the public to support the education for children with disabilities. With her popularity, the call will ring to the whole nation,” she said.

Zubiaga said support should be institutionalized so that parents of children with disabilities would be assured that someone will take care of their children.

She also proposed a public-private partnership for the establishment of a special school for children with disabilities so that they can have better access to education.

Officials: Reality TV star Benzino shot by nephew

BROCKTON, Massachusetts (AP) — The star of a hip-hop reality TV show was injured after being shot by his nephew on a Massachusetts highway Saturday while riding in a funeral procession for a family member, according to authorities and his hip-hop magazine.

Benzino, whose real name is Raymond Scott, is a cast member of the VH1 reality show “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” and CEO of Hip-Hop Weekly. The magazine confirmed on its website Saturday night that Benzino had been shot.

The 48-year-old Benzino was traveling on a highway south of Boston just before noon when 36-year-old Gai Scott pulled alongside and fired several shots into a red SUV driven by Benzino, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Officials say there had been growing tension between the two.

Benzino, of Mansfield, Massachusetts, got out of the SUV after being struck and was taken by a passerby to the Duxbury Police Department and then transferred to a hospital.

Hip-Hop Weekly said he was shot in an arm, and his back was grazed by a bullet.

He was listed in good condition, a spokeswoman for South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth said Sunday morning.

The magazine said Benzino was in the area to bury his mother. He was heading to a church in Plymouth at the time of the shooting, the District Attorney’s Office said.

Gai Scott, of Randolph, Massachusetts, was taken into custody and charged with assault with intent to murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in the Plymouth District Court.

The “Love & Hip Hop” series is known for its over-the-top drama and fights — making it a ratings success, but also a target for criticism. The fourth season of the show’s New York series ended in January. The third season of the Atlanta spinoff debuts in May.

Benzino is a former co-owner of The Source magazine. In its prime, The Source was the pre-eminent magazine for rap, and it helped fuel the rise of urban magazines such as XXL and Vibe.

Benzino left the publication in 2006 and later launched Hip-Hop Weekly, which chronicles the lives of urban music stars.

WASHINGTON | Pop icon Elton John says he will tie the knot with partner David Furnish now that his native Britain has legalized gay marriage.

LONDON (AP) — British actress Kate O’Mara, best known for her role in the 1980s soap opera “Dynasty,” died Sunday at the age of 74, her agent said.

Phil Belfield said O’Mara died in a nursing home in southern England after a short illness.

The actress, who began her television career in the 1960s, became a household name for playing Cassandra “Caress” Morrell, sister to Joan Collins’ Alexis Colby, in “Dynasty.”

In Britain she is often remembered for her role in “Triangle” — a soap opera set aboard a North Sea ferry that is often cited as the worst piece of British television.

She also appeared in the original run of British series “Doctor Who” and BBC drama “Howards’ Way.” In the 1990s she starred in the comedy show “Absolutely Fabulous” with Joanna Lumley.

More recently she appeared in a 2012 stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile.”

She is survived by her sister, actress Belinda Carroll.

BOSTON | Reality television star and rapper Benzino was shot and wounded, allegedly by his nephew, during the funeral procession for his mother outside Boston, authorities said on Sunday.

Benzino, star of the VH1 show “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta,” was driving in the procession on Route 3 on Saturday when he was shot by his nephew, Gai Scott, who had pulled alongside in another vehicle, the Plymouth County, Massachusetts District Attorney said.

He was listed in good condition on Sunday at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, a spokeswoman said.

There had been “growing family tension” between Scott and Benzino, whose given name is Raymond Scott, the district attorney said in a statement.

Gai Scott, 36, was charged with assault with intent to murder. It was not immediately clear on Sunday whether he had a lawyer, and he could not be reached for comment.

Benzino, 48, is chief executive officer of Hip Hop Weekly, which said on its website that he had been shot in the arm and grazed on his back by a bullet.

The online report did not identify Benzino’s nephew as the shooter.

It published photographs of Benzino lying in a hospital bed with a bandaged arm in a sling. In one picture, he is sitting up in bed to pose with a friend.

‘Frozen’ hits $1B in global sales, becomes top-grossing animated film ever

A scene from Disney's 'Frozen'.

NEW YORK | Disney’s hit film “Frozen” has become the top-grossing animated film in box office history, the studio said on Sunday as the musical topped $1 billion in global sales.

The film has sold $398.4 million worth of tickets at domestic (U.S. and Canadian) theaters since opening on November 27 on the eve of the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Foreign box offices have added another $674 million, for a global total of $1.072 billion, Disney said.

“Frozen,” inspired by “The Snow Queen” fairytale, is the story of a Scandinavian princess who must reconnect with her sister, the Queen, who has the power of freezing anything into ice with her hands and accidentally sets off a long winter that is destroying their kingdom.

The previous animated-film box office champion was 2010′s “Toy Story 3,” which racked up $1.063 billion in sales, according to Boxofficemojo.com. Both films were distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.

“Frozen,” which stayed in the top 10 films on domestic box office charts for more than three months, also has now become the 10th-largest grossing film in cinema history.

It sailed past last weekend’s winner, “Divergent”, based on the novel by Veronica Roth about a dystopian world divided into factions. “Divergent” collected $26.5 million and a total of $95 million since its March 21 release.

“Muppets Most Wanted”, starring Ty Burrell and Tina Fey with Jim Henson’s furry puppets, was third with $11.4 million in ticket sales from Friday through Sunday, according to estimates provided by Rentrak.

The road for “Noah” to theaters was bumpy. To counter reports in trade newspapers that Christians disapproved of the film, Paramount Pictures, the film’s distributor, commissioned a survey by Nielsen that found 83 percent of “very religious” moviegoers were anxious to see the film.

That helped push the film well beyond box office experts’ forecast of an opening weekend of about $36 million.

The film, directed by “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler” director Darren Aronofsky, was banned from theaters in Pakistan, Indonesia and other countries because it was seen by their governments as critical of Islam.

Paramount inserted an “explanatory message” before the movie that said “the film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values and integrity that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide.”

“This is really a spectacular result,” said Don Harris, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc., who said the studio had anticipated an opening of around $32 million or $33 million going into the weekend.

Looking at tickets buyers, Harris noted that “Noah,” which cost about $125 million to make, performed well across the board, “with African-American communities, with Latino communities, in the suburbs and in the central cities.”

As to the controversy that built up around the film, Harris said “it probably was helpful. Anything that causes people to talk about a movie is good for a movie.”

“But ultimately, the movie succeeded because it works as a movie,” he added, noting its strong reviews with a 76 percent “fresh” rating from the site Rottentomatoes.com.

And its strong performance at IMAX theaters, which cost more and added another $6.2 million to the take, “tells you people view the movie as an epic and want to see it in its biggest and best version,” Harris said.

In fourth place for the weekend, the animated film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” collected $9.5 million in ticket sales, pushing its take in domestic theaters to $95 million. The film features the voices of Ty Burrell, Ariel Winter and Mel Brooks.

Rounding out the top five, “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” director Wes Anderson’s offbeat look at a rundown hotel and its scheming concierge, expanded its run to nearly 1,000 theaters from 300 last week and generated $8.8 million in ticket sales.

The weekend’s other widely distributed new film, “Sabotage,” sold just $5.3 million worth of tickets for the No. 7 spot, another disappointment for a film starring one-time box office superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger. The 66-year old former California governor plays the head of an elite Drug Enforcement Agency task force that finds itself at risk of being taken down themselves.

“Cesar Chavez,” starring Michael Pena as the labor leader who organized U.S. farm workers in the 1970s, sold $3 million and was in 12th place, despite playing in fewer than 700 theaters, according to the site Box Office Mojo.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” took in an estimated $75.2 million in its first weekend of overseas release from 32 territories, Disney said. The film opens in the United States and Canada next weekend.

“Muppets Most Wanted” was distributed by Walt Disney.. Lionsgate released “Divergent” and “Cesar Chavez.” “Sabotage” was distributed by Open Road Films, a joint venture of AMC Entertainment and Regal Entertainment.

Third-time contestant from North Cotabato crowned Miss Universe-Philippines 2014

As clichéd as it sounds, the third time turned out to be a charm for Mary Jean Lastimosa.

The 26-year-old native of Tulunan, North Cotabato finally won the Miss Philippines-Universe crown that she has coveted since she first joined the pageant in 2011 and finished as second runner-up.

After making it as far as the semifinals in her second attempt in 2012, Lastimosa traveled to Brazil to gain more training in modeling and beauty pageants before returning to the country to give the Bb. Pilipinas pageant another shot. This time, she was more than ready.

“I’m releasing everything, all the past experiences that I’ve had and I’m treating this pageant as a totally new experience for me to show the new MJ,” she told InterAksyon in a pre-pageant interview.

The new MJ looks like she’s ready to face the world and win the third Miss Universe crown that has eluded the Philippines since Margie Moran-Floreindo last won it in 1973.

She had the most applauded answer in the Q&A portion when Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler asked her, “What is the greatest advantage of a woman?”’

“The greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose ourselves. Like here, we are not sure if you will support us or you will boo us. We keep our emotions to celebrate beauty,” was the winning reply of the entrepreneur who also operates a slimming center in Davao.

Lastimosa also told InterAksyon that if she wins any of the Bb. Pilipinas titles, she will give the international pageant she’ll compete in her “1,000 percent to maintain the victory that all the title holders have brought to our country”.

Aside from Miss Universe-Philippines and the People’s Choice Award that automatically comes with it, Lastimosa was also named as the new brand ambassador for PLDT Home and won the Lactacyd’s Bb. Best in Swimsuit special award.

Other winners of the pageant’s grand coronation night held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum are Mary Anne Bianca Guidotti from Taguig (Bb. Pilipinas-International), Kris Tiffany Janson from Cebu (Bb. Pilipinas-Intecontinental), Yvethe Marie Santiago from Albay (Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational) and Parul Shah from Pangasinan (Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism).

Laura Lehmann and Hannah Ruth Sison, both from Makati, won first and second runner-up respectively.

Guidotti and Santiago are given the tough tasks of duplicating the remarkable feats of their respective predecessors, Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Johanna Datul.

Like Lastimosa, Janson and Santiago were also considered as heavy favorites to win any of the five crowns up for grabs. Guidotti and Shah also figured in some fearless forecasts.

However, the loss of another heavily favored contestant, Pia Wurtzbach came as a shock to many. The former Star Magic talent who finished 1st runner-up last year seemed to have done everything right, including a Tagalog question by judge Senator Sonny Angara that she also answered in the same language.

Wurtzbach nonetheless won two special awards, Miss Philippine Airlines and the She’s So Jag award of Jag Jeans.

Janson also won Bb. Best in National Costume and Face of Bb. Pilipinas Bb. Photogenic. Other special awardees are Racquel Kabigting (Bb. Friendship), Gabrielle Erika Tilokani (Bb. Talent) and Ladylyn Riva (Bb. Manila Bulletin Readers Choice Award).

All three failed to make the top 15 semifinalists, which included Julian Aurine Flores, Joana Angelica Romero, Nichole Marie Manalo, Zahara Mae Soriano, Emma Mary Tiglao, Kenneth Santiago and Mae Liezel Ramos.

Books that celebrities are reading

I’m reading “The Sky is Everywhere,” by Jandy Nelson. It’s a beautiful story about a girl who falls in love with her dead sister’s boyfriend. But my favorite is the inspirational book, “The Purpose Driven Life,” by Rick Warren. It teaches you about God and life, asks questions and urges you to reflect. It taught me that a successful person does not take credit for his achievements; he attributes them to God.” Marinel R. Cruz

Chris Evans’ fears, his ‘Shield,’ and surviving Hollywood

Los Angeles – “My fear is fear,” revealed a hunky Chris Evans when he talked to us one sunny morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for his latest action hero movie, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

Portraying Steve Rogers/Captain America once more in the superhero sequel, the 32-year-old Boston native explained, “My fear is fearing things. Fearing things is the problem, and no matter what the issue is, whether it’s failure…. It’s the problem, it’s unnecessary.”

Co-directed by the Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe), “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” happens two years after the events of “The Avengers,” with Steve Rogers residing peacefully in Washington, DC, struggling to adapt to contemporary society. After a S.H.I.E.L.D. compatriot is assailed, Rogers becomes entangled in a mystery that may endanger the globe.

Asked what is his shield or protection in real life, Chris replied, “My family I suppose, because it’s not just protection from people, and my business and my profession, sometimes it’s protection from yourself. Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy. People who knew you before you knew to know yourself. We are blessed with this self-awareness but a lot of times, that self-awareness turns on us and if you remember a time in your life before you knew better, before you knew to look at yourself with such a judgmental vision, those are the people who know you best. It’s nice to go back to those people and be around them and remember that time.”

Asked how he is able to stay away from the tabloids, since we don’t hear of him doing drugs, partying or doing other stuff and staying in the background, Chris explained, “Well, it’s certainly been beneficial when you are trying to find different roles, given the fact that there isn’t a pre-conceived understanding of who they think they know you as. But more so than that, it’s about a personal mental health clarity. And this is a tricky business.

“No matter what business you are in, there is going to be brain noise. It’s what the brain does. It makes noise. The root of suffering is listening to that noise. If you can stay out of the public eye, you can maintain some personal stillness in your own life. It’s only going to help you find peace.”

Chris pointed out that every day, he tries to practice stillness. “I have a tattoo on my neck that talks very much about stillness,” he revealed. “It just talks of being in the now, being in the moment, being present. Our consciousness as a people is just so spread out. We are so pre-occupied with past and future and the inability to be present, to be completely accepting of the now is our biggest hurdle. If you can do that, if you can master that, you win, because all life is, is a series of now. You will never meet the future, the future will just be now.”

But isn’t that part of the essence of being in the entertainment business, we asked. “Well that’s the issue, that’s the problem, when you are in LA for an extended period of time, things that shouldn’t matter, start to matter,” he said. “Things that didn’t affect you start to affect you. This is why I go home so often, because this business is saturated with distraction. It’s saturated with pitfalls. It’s like learning a sport. If you are going to learn basketball, you just have to dribble every day, just dribble a little bit. So on a daily basis, when you feel your brain noise activating, when you feel yourself being sad or negative, for some foolish reason, all you have to do is practice just being still and being present.

“So whether it’s sitting in a museum or just sitting on your bed, whatever you can do to silence that brain noise, and just drop into the moment, that’s liberating, that’s the education, that’s the part of growth and it’s necessary. It’s all I fight for really. So it’s not necessarily in a museum. It’s every day. It’s all the time. It’s right here, right now. It’s so easy right now to even let your third eye see yourself and become insecure. But these are the moments where you have to relax and just breathe and don’t allow that noise your brain makes.”

So what’s the tattoo, we asked.

“It’s a quote from a book,” he said. “We will talk later about it. Green Eggs and Ham.”
