The mark of destiny

Mark is open to the possibility of finding love in London

Mark is open to the possibility of finding love in London

Mark Bautista did not have high expectations when he auditioned for the role of former President Ferdinand Marcos in the West End production of David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s “Here Lies Love” – a musical about the rise and fall the Marcoses.

In fact, he said he did not even expect a call back on account of the high turnout of good actors and singers that also auditioned for the role.

It was then a big surprise when he got an email from Atlantis Production saying he aced the part. He related how his heart practically “jumped” a notch when the news sank in.

The 32-year-old singer-actor said, “Si Lord, unexpected palagi ang blessings niya.”

Mark shared that his audition piece was Tom Jones’ version of “Kiss.” With a British panel at the audition, “(Inisip ko) baka familiar sa kanila ’yung song,” he added.

Although he was intimidated with the other actors and singers vying for the part, seeing how they prepared with script and dance steps perfectly memorized, Mark’s talent saw him through.

His faith also gave him the courage he needed. “Basta maging patient ka lang kasi si Lord may sariling way para maging successful ka at totoo ‘yung sinasabi Niya na ‘I have bigger plans for you,’” he said.

He believes going to London is his “destiny.”

So far away

The production of “Here Lies Love” requires Mark to stay in London for six months, or even longer – depending on how the audiences will respond to the musical.

Mark is not worried about how he would cope with being away from home. He is more anxious as to how his local fans would take to his prolonged absence.

“Kasi sabi nila na kapag umalis ka ng bansa it’s either makakalimutan ka talaga or may mangyayaring mas maganda sa ’yo,” he explained.

To stay in the loop, Mark plans to keep active via social media. Aside from that, he would also keep his presence felt on “Sunday All Stars.”

“Sabi nila magsend lang daw ako ng video ko palagi para mapakita sa TV,” he shared.

Hello, goodbye

In previous interviews, the Kapuso singer-actor shared how he’s found new inspiration. Apparently, he has been following a commercial model on Instagram whom he contacted to hopefully star in his music video. Luckily, she agreed to a meeting.

He made clear however that it wasn’t exactly a date. “Wala pang masyadong attachment,” he said, laughing.

Asked if the girl already knows that he will soon be leaving for London, Mark said, “Ngayon ko pa lang formal na sasabihin… another loss…”

That said, he is open to the possibility of finding love there. “Malay mo European pala mahanap ko,” he joked.

The singer is set to leave for London on Aug. 16.

Mark said “Here Lies Love” will focus on Imelda, touching on the love story between her and Ferdinand. It ends just at the onset of the EDSA Revolution.

“Hindi namin ipapakita dito ’yung mga problema nila sa politics dati… at wala ’yung mga shoes ni Imelda,” he stressed.

Also included in the cast are Australian actress Natalie Mendoza as Imelda, and “Britain’s Got Talent” semifinalist Dean John-Wilson as Ninoy Aquino.

Directed by Alex Timbers, the musical play will be staged at the National’s Dorfman Theatre in South Bank, London from Sept. to Jan. 2015.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Pop sensation Lorde is pulling together the music for the next installment of “The Hunger Games,” due out in November, the film’s producer Lionsgate announced Thursday.

The 17-year-old New Zealander — who dominated the charts in 2013 with “Royals” — is “hand-picking” the artists who’ll feature in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1,” it said.

She’ll also supply the movie’s first single — which, she disclosed on her Twitter account, she’s already penned with songwriting partner Joel Little.

“i am so pleased and proud to have been announced the sole curator of the soundtrack for MOCKINGJAY – PART 1,” she told her 1.94 million followers.

A global phenomenon when it first hit movie theaters in 2012, “The Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence as the bow-wielding survivor of a bloody reality TV contest in a dystopian future.

Picking Lorde to “curate” the soundtrack of its third installment dovetails with the franchise’s core demographic — teenagers and young adults.

“I sat down with Lorde on the set of ‘Mockingjay’ this spring and I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film,” said director Francis Lawrence.

“I can’t wait to share what she’s done with the fans — it is truly remarkable.”

Paramount apologises after Ninja Turtles poster recalls 9/11

SYDNEY (AFP) – Paramount Pictures apologised Thursday after publishing a poster of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film that showed the characters jumping from a burning building, with its Australian release date — September 11 — printed at the bottom.

The American movie studio deleted images of the poster, which it had placed on Australian Twitter and Facebook accounts this week, after it was slammed by users of the social media sites.

“We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia,” Paramount Australia said in a statement.

“Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offence and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use.”

The World Trade Center Twin Towers collapsed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the Al-Qaeda atrocity, with dozens jumping to their deaths from the skyscrapers to escape the flames.

The film version of the 1980s comic book heroes — who are based in New York City — will be released in the United States on August 8.

Twitter users expressed shock at the design of the poster.

“I wonder why no one at the design phase thought this poster art direction was a bad idea,” said one Twitter user, while another asked: “Is this really for real? What were they thinking?”

The apology was not posted on Paramount Australia’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Australian pop rock group 5 Seconds of Summer scored one of the year’s biggest debuts on the weekly Billboard 200 chart on Wednesday, cementing its status as the latest boy band to conquer the United States.

5 Seconds of Summer’s debut self-titled album sold 259,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. It became the third most-streamed album on music platform Spotify, with more than 4.4 million streams last week according to the platform.

For 2014, the album’s first-week sales trailed only Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories,” which debuted with 383,000 copies in May and Eric Church’s “The Outsiders,” which opened with 288,000 in February.

5 Seconds of Summer, formed by Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford, built a following as an opening act for British boy band One Direction over the past year. This year, its popularity grew with the single “She’s So Perfect,” which is on the debut album.

Disney’s “Frozen” climbed three spots to No. 2 with sales of 37,000 in its 35th week on the chart, while last week’s chart-topper, parody singer “Weird Al” Yankovich’s “Mandatory Fun,” dropped to No. 3 this week, selling 33,000 copies.

Only two other new entries made the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week. Rapper Common’s “Nobody’s Smiling” came in at No. 6 and metal band Crown the Empire clocked in at No. 7 with “The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways.”

For the week ending July 27, overall album sales totaled 4.3 million units, down 9 percent from the comparable week in 2013, Billboard said. So far this year, album sales have reached 137.8 million, down 15 percent from a year earlier.

At Skywalker Ranch, the ‘Force’ of George Lucas is everywhere

George Lucas. (AFP)

NICASIO, California | George Lucas, the man behind the mega-successful interplanetary saga “Star Wars,” may well have retired, but his spirit looms large at the famous Skywalker Ranch.

The creator of Luke, Leia, Indiana Jones and Darth Vader bought the property in 1978 with proceeds from his first blockbuster hit, “Star Wars”, to realize his dream of creating a haven for filmmaking outside Hollywood, at a cost of around $100 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rare visitors allowed into the huge complex — 1,900 hectares near San Francisco — must first weave around hills, orchards, and pastures occupied by cows and deer.

Within its boundaries, there are several screening rooms, vineyards, an underground pool and even a small inn for clients and friends.

“The ranch has its own police so do not get away from the group; they are not very flexible,” warned a spokesman during a recent media visit.

Beside an artificial pond dubbed “Lake Ewok” lies the “technical” building that houses the studios of Skywalker Sound, specializing in special effect sounds for science fiction and fantasy films — those by Lucas but also for outside clients, recently including “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Working there are several longtime collaborators of Lucas, who refer constantly to the ideas and spirit of their revered mentor.

“George always said that music is half of the movie experience,” said Matthew Wood, a Skywalker Sound employee.

On the other side of the pond, the massive white, slate-roofed main house boasts a research library with 21,000 volumes as well as the former office of the owner, now 71, who hardly comes in these days.

Lucas “is retired. He got married and just had a baby,” a spokesman said, referring to his daughter Everest who was born last year.

“He is working on his narrative art museum project in Chicago,”the spokesman added.

PRESERVING THE MAGIC

The building — decorated with film mementos, like Indiana Jones’s bullwhip, and with pieces from Lucas’s art collection, including several canvasses by Norman Rockwell — has the air of a museum.

The filmmaker sold his company and the rights to his space opera to Disney in 2012 for $4 billion, one of the biggest ever such deals.

The media empire aims now to make good on its investment.

Three new feature-length films are planned, with “Episode VII” currently filming in London, and the animated film “Star Wars: Rebels” debuting on the Disney XD channel in 46 countries in October.

In downtown San Francisco, at the Lucasfilm headquarters, Lucas’s former colleagues have gone back to work expanding the Star Wars universe while preserving its appeal for millions of fans.

With “Star Wars: Rebels,” pitched at children between age six and 12, Disney and Lucasfilm also hope to suck in a new generation to the world of the Jedi and “the Force.”

The TV series “represents this new era” beyond Luke and Leia, said executive producer Dave Filoni in the studio offices, decorated with a collection of hundreds of posters of Lucas’s films, statues of Darth Vader, spaceships and monsters.

“Star Wars: Rebels” features five fugitive rebels who live in their spaceship and who, obviously, battle the nefarious Empire.

“George always said that you cannot rely on the Star Wars lure of ships and light sabers. You need the family to work as a story,” explained Filoni, wearing his ever-present black cowboy hat.

But for fans worried about the Star Wars universe post-Lucas, Filoni promised nothing big is changing.

“Disney shows great respect for the franchise. They know that we’re the ones who know it best.”

‘Sharknado 2′ creates feeding frenzy on Twitter, record audience for Syfy

Ian Ziering battles a giant shark on subway in 'Sharknado 2'.

LOS ANGELES | Flying sharks chomping through New York City drew a record audience for Syfy’s “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” and became the most tweeted-about TV movie on social media, the U.S. cable network said on Thursday.

“Sharknado 2,” which aired on Wednesday and reunited leading stars Tara Reid and Ian Ziering from last year’s campy hit “Sharknado,” drew 3.9 million viewers to become Syfy’s most-watched original movie.

The network added that the film also attracted 1.6 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet.

On Twitter, Syfy, a unit of Comcast Corp’s NBCUniversal, said “Sharknado 2″ garnered 1 billion impressions across conversations on the micro-blogging site, and was also among the top trending topics of Wednesday evening.

In the movie, an aerial shark attack causes large-scale destruction across Manhattan. It features numerous cameos including “Today” show hosts Matt Lauer and Al Roker and country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

Last year’s “Sharknado” became a surprise hit for U.S. cable channel Syfy after attracting a cult audience drawn to the film’s low-budget special effects about a hurricane that unleashes hungry sharks on Los Angeles.

The popularity of “Sharknado,” which drew an audience of 1.4 million with its July TV premiere last year, created a social media frenzy that drew larger audiences to rebroadcasts of the film, and led the network to release “Sharknado” in 200 U.S. movie theaters.

Syfy is continuing the shark attacks with “Sharknado 3,” due out in summer 2015.

Paris porno cinema makes lone stand against the Web

Maurice Laroche, owner of Le Beverley adult cinema, poses inside the projection room at his cinema in Paris July 30, 2014. (Reuters)

PARIS | In a shabby cinema tucked away in a backstreet of central Paris, a crowd of aging devotees are putting up quiet resistance to the might of on-line pornography.

Faced with the onslaught of the Web and its thousands of sex sites catering to every taste, “Le Beverley” bills itself as the last registered porn-only cinema in Paris still serving a diet of retro classics to a loyal clientele.

Its program of 35mm films from the 1970s, along with more modern offerings, attracts 700 customers a week, many of them regulars.

Owner Maurice Laroche has run the theater for 30 years and remembers the heyday of sex cinemas, when Paris’s Grands Boulevards area was full of competitors.

But with the Internet and on-demand pornography, Laroche has seen numbers plummet with 1,000 fewer customers passing through the poster-lined hall every week than they did 15 years ago.

“There are clients that I’ve known since I came here, about 30 years ago. We’ve followed their working life, they’ve retired and since we’re all about the same age they worry whether Le Beverley, as it’s the last – barely profitable – cinema, is going to disappear or not,” he said.

The City of Love’s numerous sex shops are no substitute, Laroche says, for the sense of community in the cinema where many customers have built up friendships over the years.

“Those clients meet others in the cinema who they’ve known for some time, and who they’ve got along with. Quite a few meet up at midday for a little lunch before heading to Le Beverley to let the food go down,” he said.

Some 700, almost exclusively male, customers return weekly and Laroche puts the average age at about 60.

He started his career in mainstream cinemas and remembers showing cult classics such as “A Clockwork Orange”, the 1971 Stanley Kubrick adaptation of the Anthony Burgess novella.

Though he said he had only seen two or three pornographic films in his life, he moved to Le Beverley for a career change and bought it from the former owner in 1992.

The films are shown on a loop and its 120-seater cinema is at its busiest around three o’clock in the afternoon. Laroche says the aging clientele have little desire to brave the Paris metro system late into the night.

One of its little blue paper tickets costs 12 euros ($16), a bargain as far as Laroche is concerned as the price has remained untouched by inflation for six years.

The film reels are delivered once a fortnight by his supplier, of whom he is now the only customer.

He sees no future for his business once he retires, but for the moment at least the thought of his loyal fanbase stops him from closing the doors for the final time.

“I came here by chance and I don’t regret it,” he said. “I’ve got great customers – not many of them anymore, but they’re high quality.”

“News5” anchor Paolo Bediones has revealed via social media that a supposed blackmail attempt was behind the leakage of a private video allegedly involving him and an unidentified female.

On Instagram, Paolo posted a photo that shows a seal of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group and a computer-printed letter.

Seemingly addressed to Paolo, the letter sender claimed possession of the supposed private video.

The message read in part: “Madali namang akong kausap! Kung ayaw mong lumabas ito sa publiko, tawagan mo ako. Antayin ko ang tawag mo! Wag mo patagalin mainipin ako.”

Included in the last part of the letter is a mobile number with the last seven digits appearing to have been strategically blurred.

Sharing on Instagram that he was at the PNP-Anti Cybercrime Division, Paolo said that “Investigation has begun.”

He added, “Please help me put a stop to this. Thank you.”

After the leakage of the said video on Sunday, Television Network TV5 affirmed their “support” for the beleaguered anchor saying how they strongly disapprove the “malicious and wanton publication of the video.”

Darren to pursue singing career in PH

Darren Espanto

Darren Espanto

He may not have won the grand plum on ABS-CBN’s “The Voice Kids” but Canada-raised Darren Espanto is still bent on pursuing a music career in the country.

“Hindi na po (muna ako babalik doon) kasi po marami din pong mga offers pagkatapos ng finals (ng ‘The Voice Kids’),” he told ABS-CBN News.

His parents are open to the idea, opting to leave Darren in the care of relatives.

“Babalik sila (sa Canada) para sa trabaho,” the 12-year-old said of his folks.

Elated for gaining fans during the competition, he deems himself “quite blessed.”

Paolo Bediones bares blackmail try over private video

Paolo Bediones.

Four days after an intimate video allegedly involving himself and an unidentified female had gone viral, News5 anchor Paolo Bediones revealed that a blackmail attempt was behind it.

“At the PNP-Anti Cybercrime Division. Investigation has begun,” he posted on Twitter and Instagram Thursday afternoon. “Please help me put a stop to this. Thank you.”

The post came with a photo of the seal of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group and a computer-printed letter. (See screenshot below.)

Presumably addressed to Bediones, the letter declared the anonymous letter-sender’s possession of Bediones’ sex videos, followed by a threat to circulate them if Bediones did not call the letter-sender immediately.

The last seven digits of the phone number provided, which begins with 0919, appeared to have been redacted.

“Hawak ko ngayong [sic] ang mga sex videos mo. [M]adali naman akong kausap. Kung ayaw mong lumabas ito sa publiko, tawagan mo ako. Antayin ko ang tawag mo! Wag mo patagalin mainipin ako,” the letter said.

Immediately after the video spread online on Sunday, TV5 stood by Bediones and condemned “the malicious and wanton publication of the video, an act that clearly violates pertinent cybercrime laws”.

At posting time, Bediones had yet to issue an official statement regarding the video. Monday night, before reporting for work on TV5′s late evening newscast, “Aksyon Tonite”, he took to Twitter and Instagram and thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their “overwhelming love”.

On Tuesday, Facebook took down the video from a new Facebook account called NA PAOLO Bediones Dre. The account had been opened only last Sunday, apparently for the sole purpose of circulating the video.

InterAksyon is the online news portal of TV5.

Leeteuk reunited with Super Junior after army discharge

Preparations for K-pop boy band Super Junior’s new album and world tour are in full swing following the discharge of leader Leeteuk from the Korean army.

Leeteuk was discharged last July 29 with no fanfare. He did not meet the media and fans waiting outside his army unit in Inje, Gangwon Province in South Korea. He immediately boarded a van and sped off.

SM Entertainment previously said Leeteuk requested that no special event be held upon his release from the army.

Upon his release, Leeteuk immediately went to the SM Entertainment building and joined the Super Junior rehearsal. Leeteuk also held a private fan meeting in Seoul on that day.

Choreographer Tony Testa, who is working on Super Junior’s comeback, posted a photo on Twitter of the boy band’s rehearsal.

The photo, with the caption “Great work gentlemen,” showed Testa with Super Junior members Leeteuk, Siwon, Donghae, Eunhyuk, Sungmin, Ryeowook, Kyuhyun and Kangin.

Testa has previously worked with SM Entertainment artists EXO, SHINee and TVXQ.

In the US, he worked as choreographer for Nikki Minaj, Demi Lovato, Janet Jackson and Britney Spears.

Two days before Leeteuk was to be discharged from the army, Eunhyuk posted a photo of Leeteuk and Super Junior members at a rehearsal.

“Siwon Sungmin Kangin Ryeowook Kyuhyun Eunhyuk Leeteuk Heechul Donghae Shindong SJ is back soon,” according to the caption of the photo uploaded on Instagram on July 27.

Super Junior’s “Super Show 6″ world tour will start in Seoul on September 20 and 21. The boy band will then tour Japan, China, Thailand and other countries.

Before this, the new album is expected to be released.

INTERVIEW | Fil-Am journalist Jose Antonio Vargas on being ‘undocumented’

Jose Antonio Vargas. (Reuters)

In 1993 at the age of 12, Jose Antonio Vargas said goodbye to his mother and boarded a plane in the Philippines to join his grandparents in California. It would be four more years before he would learn that he was in the United States illegally.

“Documented,” the debut film of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who is still without the necessary papers, will open the 10th edition of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in Manila on Friday. It tells his story growing up and working as a newspaper reporter without legal status and without a path to reverse it.

The documentary, which Vargas produced, wrote and directed, aims to put a human face on the 11 million undocumented people in America. He said it is not “an immigration film,” but a “love story between a mother and a son.”

Vargas, 33, spoke with Reuters last month about the emotional stress of feeling “illegal,” why language matters in the U.S. immigration debate and how talk show host Charlie Rose helped him act “legal.”

You “came out” as an undocumented person in a 2011 magazine feature. What compelled you to share your story?

It actually started when I was assigned to cover the presidential campaign in 2007. I spent two years and two months on that campaign trail following Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and John Edwards and Sarah Palin. I didn’t have the right papers and I’m on a campaign plane in Ohio.

I think that’s when my madness started … It was either someone was going to find out or I just out myself. And really for me the hardest decision to make was deciding whether I was willing to be my own story.

Why make a film and not write your story?

The only reason I became a writer was so I could exist on a piece of paper. That was really my own reason. To this day writing is the most painful thing to do … Film, as any immigrant will tell you, television and movies is the way we make sense of this country when we first got here. Before I knew what a Republican or a Democrat was, I think I’ve seen every Mike Nichols film (“The Graduate,” “Working Girl”) you could see at the library.

Jose Antonio Vargas campaigns for immigration during a rally for the Mitt Romney campaign in 2001. (Image courtesy of Define American)

What sort of psychological pressure did you feel knowing that you could be deported?

I think I’ve always been paranoid. I always felt like I had the word “illegal” tattooed on my forehead. All of that is internal and the guilt of knowing that I am, and people not thinking that I am (illegal) because I look like this. People think this is a brown, Latino issue.

I remember the first thing I did when I found out I was illegal was to get rid of my thick Filipino accent. I figured that I had to talk white and talk black at the same time, like Charlie Rose and Dr. Dre. If I can talk white and black then no one is ever going to think that I’m “illegal.”

Through your group Define American you have campaigned for the media to change the terms in which it talks about undocumented immigrants. Why does language matter?

A lot of the reason I outed myself was to politely and aggressively ask my fellow journalists to think about language and the consequences of language … To be here illegally is actually a civil offense and not a criminal one.

Did you find any catharsis making this film and reviving contact with your mother after several years of silence?

Let’s put it this way: I got a therapist after we edited the film … It became very apparent that my story doesn’t make sense without her. She’s the one who put me on the plane. She’s the one who made the sacrifice. My story is her story. That’s when it became intensely personal. And then to face myself, I had to face her.

Do you daydream about what you would do with a passport?

The daydream would be to be free, to go wherever I want to go. I’ve done everything I’ve done in this country with the limitations I have.

(“Documentented” will be screened at 7PM on Friday at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater, after the opening ceremonies at 6PM.)

INTERVIEW | Chris Pratt on going from slob to film heartthrob

Chris Pratt in a scene from 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

BURBANK, California | Chris Pratt could have just stuck with his humorous sidekick roles and indulged in the eating and drinking that accompanies marital bliss with wife and fellow actor Anna Faris.

But then a door unexpectedly opened to a lead role as Peter Quill in Marvel Studios’ new movie franchise “Guardians of the Galaxy,” a big-budget, humor-filled outer-space adventure opening in U.S. theaters Friday.

With a more buff physique than his doughy character Andy Dwyer on TV’s “Parks and Recreation,” Pratt combines cocky and dorky into an unlikely leader of a band of outcasts bent on saving the galaxy.

The 35-year-old Pratt talked to Reuters about trusting his fanboy director, the humiliation of auditioning for action roles and the ability to provide for wife and kid now that he’s a leading man.

How did you deal with the big responsibility of establishing a franchise for Marvel?

Most of the responsibility falls on James Gunn as our director and trusty leader. James was the perfect guy to do it because he is a huge fanboy himself. He was able to guide us in terms of justifying certain things. He will say ‘You can’t do that, that wouldn’t make sense.’ And I say ‘There’s a talking raccoon standing next to me. Why does that make sense?’ And he’s like ‘Trust me!’ And so I did.

Did you have any doubts about taking on this role?

Yes I did. The casting director contacted my manager a couple of times before I was willing to go in and read for it. At the time, it was a little cloudy in terms of defining myself as an actor. I didn’t know who I was and what I was capable of doing. I had done a lot of sidekick characters, I had put on a lot of weight over the eight years I had been with my wife. We’d been in love and eating fabulous foods and drinking wine and I was getting more work than before by playing the schlubby sidekick characters.

I had been embarrassed doing auditions where I was 35 or 30 pounds overweight and I wasn’t mentally or physically sharp. Like ‘GI Joe,’ I could see their eyes glaze over halfway through the audition and that hurts your feelings (laughs).

Chris Pratt (rightmost) with Paton Oswalt, Aziz Ansari in a scene from 'Parks and Recreation'.

You were born in 1979, so what do you think about the film’s 70s soundtrack?

This movie has a great soundtrack. It definitely sets a tone and creates a sentimental feeling. Even though I wasn’t around for the 70s, I feel like I know what the 70s felt like because it really was defined by its music. Back then it was really one kind of awesome progressive music. I think it was a brilliant choice to thread this movie with that great music.

What does this role mean for your career now?

It’s definitely opened the door for me to play a more leading man character. I got the role in “Jurassic World” because of the buzz about this character before anything was released about this movie. People were willing to take my phone calls or my agent’s phone calls just because I was in this.

It is stability. I have a family, a wife and a child, and I think there is a likelihood that I’ll be working for this company for maybe a decade. That is nice because in this business you don’t always know what your next job is going to be.

I think it really works and it is a new kind of tone that I think a lot of people are going to attempt. So maybe that means that if this tone is something people were hungry for, I’ll be able to do more movies that are similar to it. But then again, it probably means nothing (laughs).

GB’s ‘Separados’ inspired by own experience

GB Sampedro’s entry to the New Breed category of this year’s Cinemalaya Film Festival, “Separados” is about people who were in marriages or relationships that, for one reason or another, didn’t work out.

GB SAMPEDRO

GB SAMPEDRO

It was a concept GB toyed with in 2006, a year after one of his relationships ended. He refined the concept, adding characters and scenes until the movie took its current form.

“Separados” is GB’s follow-up to 2009’s “Astig,” a movie that won him a Best Director award in that year’s Cinemalaya festival. The new film will be screened from Aug. 1 to 10 at different venues of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Ayala Malls Cinemas.

GB promises, “May ibang perspective ka na makikita dito. ’Yung punto de vista ng kalalakihan. Usually kasi, hindi naiisip na ang ang lalaki pwede ring masaktan.”

He adds, “People will be able to relate to the characters in the film.”

The film stars Victor Neri, Ricky Davao, Anjo Yllana, Jason Abalos, Alfred Vargas, and Erik Santos, who makes his film debut as a call center agent and battered husband.

Paramount Pictures apologizes for tweeting Ninja Turtle 9/11 poster

The four Ninja Turtles escape from an exploding skyscraper in this image from a promotional poster for 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'.

SYDNEY | Paramount Pictures film studio apologized on Wednesday for a poster for its upcoming film “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, showing the four characters jumping down from an exploding skyscraper underscored with a Sept. 11 release date.

The poster went out in a tweet posted by the Australian Paramount Pictures Twitter account and also appeared on its official Facebook page, which has more than six million fans.

Both posts received a barrage of criticism and were deleted, though some screenshots were still being shared on social media.

“We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia,” Paramount Pictures Australia said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

“Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offence and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use.”

The live-action reboot, starring Megan Fox and Johnny Knoxville and produced by “Transformers” director Michael Bay is due for release on Aug. 8 in the United States.

In Australia it will be released on Sept. 11, the thirteenth anniversary of the al Qaeda militant attacks on U.S. cities and the destruction of the World Trade Center twin towers in New York.

GB Sampedro returns to Cinemalaya with personal film about marital split

Director GB Sampedro.

Giussepe Bede Sampedro, or simply GB, was an independent screenwriter and TV director who first gained prominence in 2009 when “Astig”, his full-length feature film debut, won four awards in the 5th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, including Best Director.

An episodic tale of four young men whose stories parallel and contrast with the landmarks and various images of Manila, “Astig” won six more awards in the 2010 Star Awards for Movies and clinched a Special Mention recognition in the New Currents category at the Pusan International Film Festival also that year.

With all such accolades, one would wonder why it took Direk GB five years to come up with his second film and he concentrated on directing TV shows instead. Sampedro said it wasn’t for lack of offers.

“The truth is after ‘Astig’ in 2009, natakot akong mag-pelikula ulit kasi medyo na-pressure ako as a result of the awards. Hindi ako tumanggap ng offer to make a film kasi kung gumawa ako ng pelikula two or three years ago, iisipin ko na naman ang awards,” he told InterAksyon during the recent press conference for his new film, “S6parados”, an entry in the New Breed section for Cinemalaya’s 10th year.

But even before he started making films, the idea for “S6parados” had begun taking shape as early as 2006.

“I got separated from my wife in December, 2005. The following year, I began writing the concept for the film. Kaya lang hindi ko siya matuloy-tuloy kasi feeling ko kulang yung istorya. Kulang sa highlights, hindi ko siya matapos-tapos over the years,” he confessed.

That was until last year when GB decided he was confident enough to finally get it done. Enlisting the assistance of award-winning screenwriter (“Two Funerals”) and InterAksyon entertainment editor Enrique V. Ramos, Sampedro thought he finally found the right ingredients for his latest big screen offering.

“Feeling ko, okay na okay na yung timpla ng story. At napag-isipan ko rin na it’s about time to make a movie without thinking of awards. Para sa akin, hindi makakatulong yun sa paggawa ng isang magandang pelikula,” he added.

Inspired by the lessons from the failure of his own marriage, GB said “S6parados” is the story of six men separated from their wives, which explains the number 6 in the title.

“The film is seen from a man’s point of view when it comes to separation. Normally, we only hear the side of the women who are also in this situation. We usually don’t see that men also get hurt in these circumstances. This time, the movie presents the other side of the story,” he pointed out.

Like “Astig”, it also has a multi-story arc which has become a trademark of sorts for the filmmaker. “I always liked fast-paced stories and I’m always intrigued by the challenge of telling stories that focus on several characters. That’s probably why it has become my style.”

GB Sampedro (rightmost) with the cast of 'S6parados', namely (from left) Patricia Javier, Jason Abalos, Ricky Davao, Melissa Mendez, Ritz Azul (seated), Erik Santos, Anjo Yllana, and Victor Neri.

“The first character played by Victor Neri suffers from sexual incompatibility with his partner which led him to become a workaholic, which eventually resulted in their separation. He gets a second chance when he is remarried to the character of Ritz Azul, who happens to be the daughter of Ricky Davao, another separado who happens to be a closet queen. Ricky harbors feelings for another man, a car salesman and another separado played by Jason Abalos and so on. Tuhog-tuhog ang mga istorya nila,” he elaborates.

Sampedro says although he did not particularly identify with the characters of “Astig”, it was still a personal film for him in the sense that he grew up in the streets of Manila where the film was shot. The characters of “S6parados”, however, are closer to who he is in real life.

“Victor Neri’s character is probably the closest to me but there are bits and pieces of me in the characters of Jason Abalos, Erik Santos, Alfred Vargas and Anjo Yllana. Nakita ko rin ang sarili ko sa characters nila, in a different perspective nga lang. Perhaps the least closest to who I am is the character of Ricky Davao, which is based on the story of some of my friends.”

Cast member Alfred Vargas, now a congressman representing the 5th district of Quezon City, is also one of the film’s producers and said he is very proud to be part of this project.

“People can expect to see themselves instantly in the shoes of one or more of the separados,” he told InterAksyon during the launch of Cinemalaya X earlier this month. “‘S6parados’ is a narrative about love, life, relationships, failures and hope. It’s everybody’s story.”

“S6parados” boasts a loaded stellar cast that includes Angel Jacob, Melissa Mendez, Althea Vega, Sharmaine Arnaiz, Iwa Moto, Diana Zubiri, Sue Prado, Menggie Cobarrubias, Cris Pastor, K-La Rivera, Rhea Lim, Jace Flores, Patricia Javier, Katrina Halili, Joel Lamangan and Ritz Azul in her first feature film.

Like all other entries in the festival, the film will be screened from August 2 to 10 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Greenbelt Makati, Alabang Town Center, Trinoma and Fairview Terraces.

“S6parados” will have its gala premiere on Sunday, August 3, 9PM at the CCP Main Theater.

Alternative ‘Stairway to Heaven’ mix to be released

Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. (AFP)

LONDON | Led Zeppelin is to issue an unreleased version of their most famous song, “Stairway to Heaven”, the legendary rock band said Tuesday, after more than four decades hidden in the vaults.

The alternative mix of the epic track will be released alongside a reissue of the British heavy rock group’s untitled fourth album, commonly referred to as “Led Zeppelin IV”, due out on October 27.

It will appear on a companion disc accompanying the album, as part of a remastering of the group’s entire catalogue.

Guitarist Jimmy Page has sifted through vintage studio recordings to unearth different versions of the eight tracks on the album, which first came out in 1971.

The unreleased version of “Stairway to Heaven” comes from mixing sessions done at Sunset Sound studios in Los Angeles.

The final released version was mixed at the Island Records studio in London.

Led Zeppelin’s fourth album has sold more than 29 million copies, and in the United States has gone platinum more than 23 times over.

“Stairway to Heaven” was in the news earlier this year when a US lawyer said he was gearing up to sue Led Zeppelin for allegedly pilfering another band’s music for the classic song.

Contacted by AFP in May, Francis Alexander Malofiy confirmed a report in Bloomberg Businessweek saying a copyright lawsuit is in the works, but declined to give details.

According to the magazine, the plaintiffs allege Led Zeppelin lifted the song’s opening riffs from a 1968 instrumental called “Taurus” recorded by the Los Angeles psychedelic band Spirit.

Spirit and Led Zeppelin shared the stage during a US tour in 1969.

Also to be issued on October 27 is a remastered version of the group’s fifth album “Houses Of The Holy”, also with archive takes alongside it.

New editions of the band’s first three albums came out last month.

Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham.

Page, singer Robert Plant and bassist John Paul Jones reunited in 2007 with Bonham’s son Jason on the drums for a one-off tribute concert for the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the group in 1968.

But Plant is not interested in doing it again, saying he does not want to be part of his own tribute act, touring old hits just to make money.
