In a spectacular display of fireworks, a 3D mapping show and first-rate entertainment, TV5’s biggest stars and special guests ended an eventful 2014 and welcomed 2015 on a very upbeat mode with “Happy sa 2015: The Philippine New Year Countdown” at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.
A joint endeavor of the Quezon City Government and the MVP Group of Companies, the New Year’s Eve festivities was opened to the public as early as 10AM Wednesday featuring booths from sponsors like PLDT and Smart and highlighted by the Happy Network’s first ever “on the spot” talent search that attracted thousands of hopefuls.
By late evening or about an hour before the start of the New Year Countdown, the formal program began with a star-studded musical number led by Ogie Alcasid, Tuesday Vargas and DJ and former child star Tom Taus.
Following the number Ogie and Tuesday were joined by Alice Dixson and Metro Manila Film Festival Best Actor Derek Ramsay to host the event as an estimated crowd of over 20,000 were treated to more entertainment fare.
Highlights included the well-received performance of “Trenderas” stars Isabelle de Leon and Katrina Velarde with the vocal group AKA Jam.
Dancer Gab Valenciano, son of Mr. Pure Energy himself Gary Valenciano, displayed the form that made him a phenomenal YouTube sensation in 2013 as he and the Philippine All-Stars literally owned the stage in a show-stopping number.
Not to be outdone, beatboxer and Talentadong Pinoy 2014 Ultimate Talentado Neil also dazzled the crowd with his multi-voiced prowess in another thrilling presentation obviously inspired by his musical hero, Michael Jackson.
In a medley of popular show tunes including “Tomorrow” from “Annie”, Pop Diva Kuh Ledesma delivered another classy performance further enhanced by aerial dancer Mystiq, another Talentadong Pinoy 2014 Hall of Famer.
And “Kanta Pilipinas” grand champion Chadleen also performed a medley of the popular “Wattpad Presents” theme songs she had recorded.
Also in attendance were other TV5 stars like Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Ritz Azul, Carl Guevarra, comedian Empoy Marquez and “Artista Academy” graduates Marvelous Alejo, Akihiro Blanco, Mark Neumann, Brent Manzano, Chris Leonardo and Alberto Bruno.
As the network stars also took the opportunity to promote some of TV5’s new shows for 2015, also seen in attendance at the New Year Countdown were MVP Group of Companies chairman Manny V. Pangilinan, TV5 president and chief executive officer Noel C. Lorenzana and other network executives.
Top executives of the MVP Group, including Smart’s Napoleon Nazareno, Maynilad’s Ricky Vargas, Metro Pacific’s Ramoncito Fernandez and MVP himself, delivered their New Year’s message to the public.
Speaking in behalf of the MVP group, Pangilinan expressed his gratitude to the Quezon City government led by Mayor Herbert Bautista for the staging of TV5’s first ever New Year countdown show which may be an annual affair from hereon. MVP said their wish for 2015 was simple: to deliver happiness in every home.
MVP’s upbeat tone is very much reflected on the new programming thrust of TV5 for 2015 which intends to shun the negative and instead places emphasis on everything positive.

LOS ANGELES | Sony Pictures Entertainment added more viewing options for its provocative comedy “The Interview,” making the film available through U.S. pay television operators and nearly doubling the number of independent theaters that will show the movie.
The film, blamed for triggering a massive cyberattack on Sony’s movie studio, will also be sold through Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s digital on-demand service, Vudu, and on Sony’s PlayStation Network, Sony said in a statement on Wednesday.
On Dec. 17, Sony canceled the Christmas Day release of “The Interview,” a farcical story starring Seth Rogen and James Franco as journalists recruited by the CIA to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, after hackers threatened violence against movie theaters and major theater chains refused to show it.
Following days of criticism from Hollywood celebrities and President Barack Obama, Sony struck deals to launch the film in 331 independent theaters and through online distributors, such as Google Inc’s YouTube Movies and Google Play.
After the film earned $15 million from 2 million sales or rentals over four days, Apple Inc added the movie to its iTunes store, where it ranked as the top-selling movie on Wednesday.
Also on Wednesday, U.S. cable, satellite and telecommunications providers began making “The Interview” available to rent through their video on-demand and pay-per-view services, Sony said. The providers include Comcast Corp, Time Warner Cable Inc, Cox Communications, AT&T Inc’s U-verse, Verizon Communications Inc’s Fios and DirecTV. Vudu and Verizon customers also can buy the film.
“The Interview” will also play in more than 580 independent theaters starting on Friday.
Over the long Christmas holiday weekend, the limited theatrical release brought in $2.8 million at the box office, as moviegoers turned out to support what they called a triumph for free speech.
Sony is trying to recoup the $44 million production budget plus an estimated $30 million to $40 million in marketing costs for “The Interview.” The studio shares revenue from theater and online sales with the distributors.
The U.S. government has blamed retaliation by North Korea for the hacking of Sony in November, the most destructive cyberattack on a company on U.S. soil. North Korea has denied that it was behind the attack.
LOS ANGELES | Taylor Swift stole the crown from the princesses of “Frozen” in the final week of 2014 as her pop-centric “1989″ became the top-selling album of the year, Billboard reported on Wednesday.
In the nine weeks since its release, “1989″ sold 3.66 million copies, clipping the 3.53 million in sales for the soundtrack of the Disney blockbuster, which was the top-selling album of the year every week except the final one.
“1989″ held the No. 1 spot in the weekly U.S. Billboard 200 chart for the seventh time, selling 430,000 units in the week ending Dec. 28, including 326,000 album copies and over 1 million songs, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.
The album, Swift’s fourth No. 1, first launched on the back of “Shake It Off,” but the single “Blank Space” has taken over and is the top song downloaded digitally, according to Nielsen.
Swift, 25, does not have any streaming sales in a newly configured Billboard formula. She is one of a handful of top artists protesting some streaming sites like the popular Spotify.
In its second week, rapper Nicki Minaj’s “The Pinkprint” retained its No. 2 position in the chart with 156,000 total units sold, from 105,000 albums, 405,000 songs and 1.4 million hits on streaming.
A cappella quintet Pentatonix held at No. 3 with “That’s Christmas to Me” registering 131,000 total sales units.
The revamped Billboard 200 counts 10 songs downloaded as equal to one album unit, while 1,500 online streams equals one album unit.
The new chart formula unveiled this month is an effort to better represent current music consumption, Billboard said. Album sales have been in steady decline with the rise of individual song downloads and Internet streaming.
The Year of the Wooden Sheep looks only too exciting for some of the country’s biggest stars based on the predictions of soothsayers Robert Das and Maricell Gaskell. Here are some of them.
An extension
Das made headlines when he predicted early in 2014 that Coco Martin will get Kris Aquino pregnant.
He was wrong. The two aren’t even in a relationship as of this writing.
Undeterred, Das shared on “Gandang Gabi Vice,” “Masyado lang maiksi ’yung time na ibinigay ko. ’Yung nakita ko no’n, (na) si Sir Coco Martin saka si Ma’am Kris Aquino magkaka-anak ng babae, i-retain natin ’yan from 2015 to 2017.”
He insisted that he is on the right track, pointing out how the two have gotten quite close while working on “Feng Shui 2.”
Gaskell isn’t as forthright, offering simply that Kris will found new love in 2015.
“Magiging makulay (ang love life niya) for 2015. Merong special someone. May special someone na iyan sa 2015,” she told “Startalk.”
Baby Bossing?
Gaskell is more confident dishing out about Pauleen Luna and Vic Sotto. According to her, the two might just be blessed with a baby in 2015.
She related, “Hindi ko kasi nakita iyong marriage for 2015. Pero there’s a possibility na magkakaroon sila ng baby. Mas nakikita ko iyon.”
Gaskell is also seemingly too knowledgeable about goings on inside the bedroom of newlyweds Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, sharing how the two will have a baby ahead of Heart Evangelista and Chiz Escudero.
Well it should be a no-brainer, with Evangelista and Escudero tying the knot a few days later than the two, on Feb. 15.
Gaskell said the couple did good in scheduling their wedding on the said date.
“Kasi kung ikakasal sila after February 19, eh ’yung sign ni Heart which is Year of the Ox, hindi good for the Year of the Sheep so baka magkaroon pa ng problema,” she said.
Sharon as politician
Sharon Cuneta, who described 2014 as the “most horrible” if “worst year” of her life would do well to lay low relating showbiz matters in 2015.
According to Gaskell, Cuneta will have a hard time making a comeback this year. She suggested that the Megastar should start investing time and effort on politics instead.
She said, “Kahit ayaw niya, talagang du’n siya mapupunta.”
Conflicts
Suspended Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla, who are both currently in detention over plunder and graft charges, are recommended to look for the right advisers.
“Kung puwede lang, makinig sila sa mga tamang tao. Maayos naman ’yung mga problema eh. Kasi (sa case nila) ’yung signs talaga play a vital role. It so happened kasi ’yung sign ng presidente natin, kalaban talaga ng sign ng dalawa kaya may conflict talaga,” Gaskell said.
Revilla was born in The Year of The Horse, while Jinggoy was born in The Year of the Rabbit.
President Noynoy Aquino was born in the Year of the Rat.
Despite a stellar nine-trophy finish at the recent 40th Metro Manila Film Festival, including Best Picture, the producer of “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” couldn’t help but wonder why their film wasn’t able to bring home the other major awards including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress.
Navarro wanted to be “educated” on the film festival’s judging process, particularly in the Best Picture category as “hindi ko siya maintindihan.”
She made clear that she is not holding a grudge against the team of “English Only, Please,” which won Best Director (for Dan Villegas), Best Actor (Derek Ramsay) and Best Actress (Jennylyn Mercado).
“I don’t want to discredit anyone. Maganda naman ang acting nila,” she said. “Hindi nila kasalanan that they won. Lahat ng mga artista, of course, they gave their best. I only speak po for ‘Bonifacio.’”
Criteria
Metro Manila Development Authority chairman and head of the MMFF executive committee Francis Tolentino was quick to defend the judging process maintaining, “Lahat ay sinuri at sinuma ng ating independent auditing firm.”
According to Tolentino, the criteria for Best Picture include 25% creativity and artistry, 25% technical excellence and innovation, 25% content and 25% Filipino, cultural or historical value.
“Baka may close fight doon o merong basehan ’yung judges na hindi ko alam, hindi naman ako member ng board of jurors,” he said.
Tolentino thanked Navarro for entering this year’s MMFF, noting how “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” contributed greatly to the festival’s success.
It’s great to start off 2015 with gratitude. Besides, being thankful for one’s blessings is bound to attact good vibes throught the year. The big winners of the recently concluded 40th Metro Manila Film Festival Awards took this to heart, evidenced by their posts on social media:
Robin Padilla, lead star of “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” acknowledged via Instagram how his nephew Daniel Padilla’s popularity contributed to the film earning the Youth Choice Award, which he considers the more significant recognition even with their film also earning nods as Best Picture, Best Festival Sound Recording, Best Musical Score, Best Original Theme Song, Best Cinematographer (for Carlo Mendoza) and Best Float.
Note that the film also earned the Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Film Excellence and Gatpuno Antonio Villegas Cultural Award.
Robin went on to compare Daniel to a modern-day version of the youthful revolutionary Emilio Jacinto, saying, “…tunay na ikaw ang naging daan upang makamit namin ang minimithing hudyat… Ang iyong patuloy na pakikiisa sa Truth Revolution is the only way to guide the Youth to love God, Country and fellowMen… Mabuhay ang Katipunan.”
Best Actress Jennylyn Mercado (for her performance in “English Only, Please”) uploaded on Instagram a photo of her kissing her trophy.
Co-star Derek Ramsay, who was named festival Best Actor, for his part, tweeted how a “crazy emotional” year still ended up quite good for him.
He posted, “I went through many trials but with the support of family, friends and faith in (G)od I got through them… Having the opportunity to be a father to my wonderful son & now winning this award make this one of the best years of my life. Life is good!”
The rom-com’s director Dan Villegas (who won Best Director) quietly expressed his gratitude by posting an outdoor photo on Instagram.
His partner, Antoinette Jadaone for her part tweeted, “DAN VILLEGAS. BEST DIRECTOR. LANG NAMAN. Pinagdasal ko talagang mapunta sa’yo ’to. WHAT DID I TOLD YOU SO??? Partner, congrats! \m/.”
She also rejoiced over “English Only, Please” being named second Best Picture, saying, “Nakakataba kayo ng puso, grabe. Magre-reply ako sa inyong lahat, promise, pero sa ngayon… ang sarap maging kaibigan n’yong lahaaaaaat.”
“English Only, Please” also won Best Screenplay, Best Original Story and Best Editor (Marya Ignacio).
Best Supporting Actress Lotlot de Leon (for her performance in “Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2”) shared her joy with fans on Instagram, describing her win as “the greatest blessing, Father GOD.”
The film’s star, Dingdong Dantes, congratulated and recognized the whole team of “Kubot: The Aswang Chronicles 2,” wishing everyone “Isang malaking apir” on Instagram.
The film also scored the Best Supporting Actor plum for Joey Marquez, Best Production Design, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects.
Best Child Performer winner Ryzza Mae Dizon (for her performance in “My Big Bossing”) offered the award to all her “Dabarkads.”
“Sa lahat po ng nanood ng ‘my big bossing’ maraming salamat po. Sa mga hindi pa po nakakanood, nood na po kayo,” she posted on Instagram.
Jason Paul Laxamana, who won the New Wave Best Director (Full-Length category) for “Magkakabaung (The Coffin Maker),” which also won New Wave Best Picture (Full-Length category), and New Wave Best Actor (for lead actor Allen Dizon), celebrated the multiple triumph on Instagram, posting, “What a way to end 2014!”
Despite coming up empty-handed during the awards night, Vice Ganda nevertheless tweeted “155 Million THANK YOUs” to viewers who watched his “The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin 2.” Note that the number relates to his entry’s reported box office earnings. (Other photos by Ali Vicoy)

THE FIRST SPINNR HITLIST AWARDS
Legal music downloading is considered by most as among more successful attempts to quell music piracy. Today, it is what the industry uses to gauge a hit song.
Smart’s homegrown music app, Spinnr, is a huge part of this movement. It is as such that they deem it only quite fitting that they launch the first Spinnr Hitlist Awards.
Held at Valkyrie in The Fort, the first first winners of Spinnr Hitlist Awards are: Spinnr Song of the year: “All of Me” by John Legend; Spinnr Album Of The Year: “Big Hero 6 OST;” Spinnr Best Indie Artist of 2014: Julie Ann San Jose; Spinnr OPM Artist of 2014: Nikki Gil (“Babalikan Mo Rin Ako”); and Spinnr Artist of the Year 2014: Taylor Swift.
“We can no longer deny that the digital music business has a big say on naming which song qualifies as a hit. With the Spinnr Hitlist Awards, we are pushing more boundaries for hit music contributions, local or foreign, through digital downloads, which is the Smart Life, a tangible concretization of our Live More campaigns,” said Lucille Tang, Spinnr’s product manager.

2014 is a landmark year for Pinoy pride, with several of our talented countrymen eking huge attention on the global stage, particularly in the realm of entertainment.
From London to Nuremberg, Singapore to Vietnam, the following gave us reasons to wave Pinoy flag even higher:
RACHELLE ANN GO, MARK BAUTISTA
Mark Bautista was recognized at the 60th Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his portrayal of Ferdinand Marcos in the musical extravaganza “Here Lies Love,” which is currently being staged in London.
Mark also received rave reviews from different international websites for his portrayal of the late president.
Critic Michael Billington of The Guardian noted Mark’s “effective” performance. Paul Taylor of The Independent found the Pinoy’s essay “sexy.”
Rachelle Ann Go, on the other hand, wasnamed Best Featured Actress at the Broadway World UK/West End Awards for her performance as Gigi in “Miss Saigon.”
‘NORTE, HANGGANAN NG KASAYSAYAN’
This Lav Diaz-helmed four-hour opus about crime and punishment has consistently earned accolades locally and internationally.
Aside from winning Best Screenplay (Pinakamahusay na Dulang Pampelikula) at last year’s Gawad Urian Awards, the Filipino drama won Best Film at the Pancevo International Film Fest in Serbia and Audience Award (Feature Film Competition) at the IBAFF Murcia International Film Festival 2014.
“Norte” also received the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Award at the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival.
Variety, an online site considered as one of the most respected sources of information in Hollywood, named it one of the year’s best films under the article titled “Variety Critics Pick the Best Films of 2014 (So Far).”
As if those were not enough, the film was also included in American men’s magazine Details’ “Top 10 Best Under-the-Radar Films of 2014.”
‘MY HUSBAND’S LOVER’
The series got the lion’s share of trophies at the 5th Golden Screen TV Awards in March including Outstanding Original Drama Program.

SARAH GERONIMO
Sarah Geronimo continues to add to her multi-decorated cap this year.
Just recently, she was handpicked to record an English version of the Disney Princess theme song “The Glow” – the first Pinay to do so.
Prior, Sarah already made waves internationally winning the Best Southeast Asia Act plum at the 2014 MTV EMA. Of course, Sarah also won several awards in home turf. She nabbed the Best R&B Recording award for her single “Ikot-Ikot” at the 2014 Awit Awards, Female Performer of the year at the Yahoo Philippines OMG! Award, Favorite Media Soundtrack (“It Takes a Man and a Woman”) and Favorite Artist at the MYX Awards.

LOS ANGELES | Jennifer Lawrence says she’d be fine if she got Ebola, in a video that encourages Americans to focus more on West Africans far more likely to die from the dreaded virus.
The Oscar-winning actress teamed up with fellow stars from “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1″ for the nearly two-minute online public service announcement from the Ebola Survival Fund.
The video opens with a montage of clips from breathless US television news coverage of the tiny handful of Ebola cases so far in the United States.
It then points out that none of the eight “American patients” treated for Ebola in US hospitals have died — while in some parts of West Africa only two out of every 10 cases survived.
“A lot of them didn’t make it,” says Lawrence, to which her “Hunger Games” co-star Josh Hutcherson replies: “They didn’t have a lot to begin with.”
“In Liberia, they had 50 doctors for 4.4 million people,” Hutcherson said, before telling Lawrence: “I know what would happen if you got Ebola.”
“I’d be fine,” she solemnly replied.
Mahershala Ali, Liam Hemsworth, Julianne Moore and Jeffrey Wright also appear in the video.
But the core message came from Harvard medical professor and Partners in Health co-founder Paul Farmer, well-known for his work in developing health care in poor countries.
Ebola patients in West Africa, he said, urgently need IV fluids, electrolytes, food and “many more well-trained West African medical professionals.”
“With high-quality supportive care, the great majority of people in West Africa will survive Ebola,” Farmer added.
Two Ebola fatalities within the United States have been reported, but neither were native-born Americans.
Last month, another posse of Hollywood stars including Ben Affleck, Bono, Vincent Cassel, Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, came together for an Ebola video sponsored by the ONE Campaign.

LOS ANGELES | The upcoming installment of the “Star Wars” franchise tops moviegoers’ lists of most anticipated films of 2015, ticket seller Fandango said on Tuesday in what Hollywood watchers expect to be a banner box office year for studios.
“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” highlights a year of big-budget franchise releases that includes runner-up films “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.”
Those films are expected to push challenge 2013′s record year of about $11 billion in U.S. ticket sales. This year so far, films have grossed $9.4 billion domestically, according to boxofficemojo.com.
The new “Star Wars” film, which will be the first produced by Walt Disney Co, is set to be released on Dec. 18 and the reboot of George Lucas’ sci-fi universe will be directed by “Star Trek” filmmaker J.J. Abrams.
“Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence was the top female actor moviegoers wanted to see for the second consecutive year, according to Fandango’s survey of more than 1,000 people.
The final installment of Lions Gate’s young-adult thriller is scheduled to be released on Nov. 20, 2015. This year’s installment has so far grossed $306.7 million five weeks into its run at U.S. theaters, the second-highest in 2014 ticket sales behind “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Robert Downey Jr, who returns as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the follow-up to Disney’s 2012 “Avengers” superhero film, was the top male actor, according to Fandango.
Other anticipated films include erotic thriller “Fifty Shades of Grey,” from Universal Pictures’ art house unit Focus Features, and “Jurassic World,” Universal’s resurrection of the “Jurassic Park” dinosaur disaster series.
“Fifty Shades” star Jamie Dornan was picked as the biggest breakout male star, while “Star Wars” actress Daisy Ridley was the biggest female breakout star.
The top anticipated family movie was “Minions,” Universal’s next installment in the animated “Despicable Me” franchise. It was followed by “Cinderella,” “Inside Out,” “Peanuts” and “Pan.”
The groom, in an elegant white tuxedo, arrived in church on a Ducati motorbike; the bride in a white wedding gown, came on board the groom’s first car, a restored 1976 Mercedes Benz sedan.
The personal touch to the grand entrance of the “Prime time king and queen” of GMA7 – Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera –added a charming touch to their wedding ceremony held yesterday, Dec. 30, at the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Cubao, Quezon City. The church was chosen because it was where Dantes was baptized and where the couple had frequently visited.
It was a grand fairytale wedding which gathered some of the biggest names in show business, fashion, business, and politics, with several Catholic bishops and priests concelebrating the mass.
The witness of honor was President Aquino. The principal sponsors included Governor Vilma Santos Recto, German Moreno, Kris Aquino, Lily Monteverde, Celia Rodriguez, Randy Ortiz, Wilson Tieng, Wilma Galvante, Regine Velasquez, and Dr. Vicki Belo. Among the secondary sponsors were Ai Ai delas Alas, Richard Gomez, KC Concepcion, and Ryzza Mae Dizon.
Dantes’ tuxedo was created by Randy Ortiz, his long-time friend.
Rivera wore a Michael Cinco lace gown studded with crystals, and a mother-of-pearl crown made in the Middle East.
Even the music played during the wedding ceremony seemed like personal choices –from Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” to Eraserheads’ “Ang Huling el Bimbo” rendered by an orchestra and at times, sung by combined chorale groups.
The guests came in red and black; the women with roses in their hair, and coin bearers dressed like Spanish matadors. The Spanish motif was a reminder of Rivera’s roots in Madrid. Her father had flown in from Madrid days before the wedding.
The mass went solemnly with the couple exchanging meaningful, happy glances, and beaming at each other during the homily and throughout the proceedings.
The reception –a sit-down Italian banquet reportedly for 1,000 guests –was held at The Arena of The SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
In lieu of gifts, well-wishers were encouraged to make donations to YesPinoy, an organization of the National Youth Commission where Dantes is Commissioner-at-Large.
Dantes and Rivera were in a relationship for years before he proposed to her first, in Macau’s Butterfly Garden, then on national TV a few years later.
They shot several pre-nuptial photos and videos in Pampanga and Dubai after the wedding announcement. Rivera had at least eight bridal showers tendered for her by family, friends and fans.
Dubbed as the “Royal Wedding” or the “Wedding of the Decade,” the official wedding website of the couple openedweeks prior to the big day. An area in front of the church was allotted to viewers, and several streets around the church were closed and manned by police officers yesterday.

Rhonda Byrne, author of world-famous book “The Secret,” has a new tome out titled “The Magic” about attracting more blessings.
Since 2015 is just a “kembot” away, I would like to share some of the things it says, mainly looking forward, not back.
Singer-songwriter Willie Nelson, was quoted by Rhonda Byrne in “The Magic” as saying, “When I started to count my blessings, my whole life turned around.”
Count your blessings. A lot of people might have told you that, but have you ever given it a try?
According to the book, when you’re grateful for the things you have, no matter how small are, you will see these things increase exponentially.
Like if you learn how to be grateful about your job. When you learn to love, respect and appreciate whatever it is that you do, it actually becomes easy. More, it becomes enjoyable. The magic follows in that, suddenly, opportunities would simply sprout from nowhere.
The idea also works well in relagrateful for the relationships you’re in – if you’re more appreciative of your partner – you will see yourself loving him or her more.
The same goes with money. If you’re grateful for what you have, however little, you will see it grow right before your eyes.
See, it’s all about being thankful.
Now what happens when you don’t count your blessings and instead fall into the trap of counting negative things? Like when you lament about the things you don’t have, when you criticize or find fault in other people, when you complain about traffic, waiting in lines, delays, the government, not having enough money, or the weather.
When you count negative things, they double. More, every negative you count cancels the blessings that should have been yours already.
I often say this to people: “Huwag na huwag mong sasabihin na wala kang pera. Kasi kapag sinabi mo iyon baka papunta na ‘yung pera sa iyo, lumihis pa!”
Personally I have tried both and I can assure you that counting your blessings leads to happiness and peace of mind—exactly what I wish for in 2015.
WASHINGTON | Even after Washington pointed the finger at North Korea for the massive cyberattack on Sony Pictures, some experts say the evidence is far from clear cut.
President Barack Obama earlier this month took the unusual step of naming North Korea for the crippling attack, while promising that the United States would “respond proportionately” after the FBI said evidence pointed to Pyongyang.
But a number of cybersecurity specialists argue that links to North Korea are uncertain, and that some evidence leads elsewhere.
“I’m skeptical about the claim and I would be even more skeptical that the North Koreans did it on their own without help from a third party or government,” said John Dickson, a former air force intelligence officer who is now a partner in the cybersecurity firm Denim Group.
The North Koreans “certainly have the will to poke us in the eye,” but “don’t have the critical mass skills of other nation states” to carry out an attack of this kind, Dickson told AFP.
Security technologist Bruce Schneier of Co3 Systems, also a fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Center, said he also doubts the role of North Korea.
“The truth is we don’t know,” he said. “There are facts that are classified and not being released.”
Schneier added that “even if we don’t know (who is responsible), it makes sense for us to pretend we know because it serves as a warning to others.”
In a blog post, Schneier said that “clues in the hackers’ attack code seem to point in all directions at once… this sort of evidence is circumstantial at best. It’s easy to fake, and it’s even easier to interpret it incorrectly.”
North Korea has been seen as the source of the malware, presumably due to anger at the cartoonish portrayal of the Pyongyang communist regime in the comedy film “The Interview.”
But a linguistic-based analysis of the malware by the Israeli-based security firm Taia Global said the native language of the hackers appeared to be Russian, not Korean.
The study concluded that the software authors were not native English speakers, and that the translation errors pointed away from the Koreans.
“We tested for Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and German,” the report said. “Our preliminary results show that Sony’s attackers were most likely Russian, possibly but not likely Korean and definitely not Mandarin Chinese or German.”
CLASSIFIED INTELLIGENCE
Security experts note that it is relatively easy for hacker to route their attacks through third parties to fake their location and that is nearly impossible to conclusively show the source of an attack.
And Dickson notes that Washington is unlikely to reveal its intelligence sources in the Sony case “because the next set of attackers would change their tactics” to avoid detection.
Johannes Ullrich, dean of research at the SANS Technology Institute, said the attacks could have been carried out by independent hacker groups, possibly with help or direction from North Korea.
“Sometimes state actors use the hacker groups and stay at arm’s length, but are helping these groups,” he told AFP.
The free flow of information among hacker groups and rogue nations could mean multiple parties were involved, Ullrich said.
He noted that the Sony attack “did not require a high level of sophistication, but what it required was persistence, to find the weak spot to get in.”

Researcher Robert Graham at Errata Security said if North Korea had a role in the attacks, it may have been through outside hackers.
“North Korean hackers are trained as professional, nation state hackers,” Graham said in a blog post.
“North Korea may certainly recruit foreign hackers into their teams, or contract out tasks to foreign groups, but it’s unlikely their own cybersoldiers would behave in this way.”
Other experts argue that the Obama administration would not publicly name North Korea unless it had solid evidence.
“I’m amazed that people continue to have doubts,” said James Lewis, a cybersecurity researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “People love conspiracy theories.”
Lewis said US intelligence has the capability to locate the source of the attacks, and there is no domestic political need to blame North Korea.
“The intelligence community would never have let (Obama) stick his neck out on this unless they had a high degree of confidence about this,” he said.
Paul Rosenzweig, a former US Homeland Security official who now heads a consulting group, said “it is worth considering the opposing view.”
“In the post-Watergate/post-Snowden world, the (government) can no longer simply say ‘trust us,’” he wrote in a post on the Lawfare blog.
“Not with the US public and not with other countries. Though the skepticism may not be warranted, it is real.”
As Kris Aquino pointed out during the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival awards night that she co-hosted with Edu Manzano at the PICC, films that win awards in the annual Christmas season festival usually draw enough curiosity to prompt more people to see it.
That turns out to be true as far as Dan Villegas’ “English Only, Please” is concerned. One day after it won seven MMFF awards including 2nd Best Picture and the equally coveted Best Actor and Best Actress trophies for lead stars Derek Ramsay and Jennylyn Mercado, celebrated indie filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone who co-wrote the unheralded romantic comedy with Anj Pessumal tweeted the good news to her social media followers.
Happy that ticket sales for #EnglishOnlyPlease are now picking up! Thank you for helping us spread the word! Kayo ang promo team namin hihi
— Tonette, Tonette (@tonetjadaone) December 28, 2014
Jadaone would later tweet photos of the film’s sold out screenings in Greenbelt and Trinoma cinemas indicating its growing following after the awards night. As “English Only, Please” is fast becoming the sleeper hit of the MMFF, it reportedly added 17 more cinemas where it is set to open this Tuesday, December 30.
Among these theaters are Newport in Resorts World Manila, SM Megamall Digital Cinema, Sta. Lucia Cinema 7, Walter Mart in Makati, SM Lucena, Robinsons Imus, Robinsons Pioneer, SM Sucat, SM Valenzuela, Robinsons Magnolia, Ayala Center Cinema Cebu, SM Tarlac (two cinemas), SM Cagayan de Oro, SM Pampanga, SM San Fernando and Megacenter The Mall in Cabanatuan City.
Not bad for a film that almost did not get completed in time for the festival. During her acceptance speech for their 2nd Best Picture Award, practicing lawyer and independent film producer Atty. Joji Alonso whose Quantum Films co-produced “English Only Please” acknowledged “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo” co-producer Eduardo Rocha for coming to the rescue of the film at the last minute.
Now the modestly budgeted film has become the sleeper hit of the ongoing MMFF.
It has also become a huge career boost for both Derek and Jennylyn who took over the roles that was originally announced by the MMFF to be portrayed by Sam Milby and Angeline Quinto.
The unlikely tandem who were never paired together before showed remarkable chemistry throughout the film particularly in their cute and hilarious “Don’t ask” repartees.
For his role as Julian Parker, a Fil-American lovelorn who hired an English tutor to help him interpret the bitter message of a letter he wants to personally deliver to his ex-girlfriend, Derek won the first Best Actor award of his career. More importantly, it also established his versatility as an actor following a villainous turn in the equally acclaimed Cinemalaya feature, “The Janitor”.
Derek will continue his foray into comedy in 2015 with the TV5 sitcom “Mac & Chiz” which co-stars him with comedian Empoy Marquez and actress Bianca King.
In her review of the film, Interaksyon columnist Jessica Zafra noted that Jennylyn “seems overdue for stardom.” Although she first won the 2006 MMFF Best Actress award for Joel Lamangan’s “Blue Moon”, Jennylyn has since become more known for her GMA teleseryes rather than her film projects, the last of which was the rather unmemorable “The Bride and the Lover” in 2013.
But the 27-year old actress showed why she became the first ever winner of the GMA reality talent show, “StarStruck” where she bested an illustrious batch that included Yasmien Kurdi, Nadine Samonte, Katrina Halili and Cristine Reyes.
In “English Only, Please”, Jennylyn delivered the performance of her career as Tere Madlansacay, the English tutor who wears her heart on her sleeve and as a result is often taken advantage of by the men she falls in love with, particularly by her on-and-mostly-off boyfriend played by Kean Cipriano.
“Her Tere is fully believable and sympathetic—you can’t help but root for her. She’s beautiful, but doesn’t seem to know it…She’s not trying to make the audience like her, she’s showing the audience that she is like them. Most actresses think they have to deglamorize themselves to find their Everywoman quality; Mercado projects it by acting natural,” Zafra wrote in her review.
Like Zafra, other film critics have also given “English Only, Please” their glowing recommendations. As with the seven other entries of the MMFF, the film will remain in theaters until the festival ends on January 6. The films that did very well in the box office during the filmfest’s duration, however, are usually given extended runs in several theaters.
Actress Jennylyn Mercado has refuted rumors linking him to Ilocos Sur Congressman Ronald Singson.
The talk started with a tabloid alleging that they were supposedly spotted being cozy in Boracay last month.
In a taped interview for “Startalk,” Jennylyn howled, “Hindi ko po siya kilala. Saka hindi ko pa po siya nakikita. Kahit na ‘hi, hello,’ never pa po.”
She added that she has been quite busy with work to actually think about taking it easy in Boracay in the last month.
Jennylyn enumerated, “May pelikula ako, may soap akong ginagawa, may cooking show ako, may ‘SAS (Sunday All Stars)’ ako. Paano ako makakaalis?”
She maintained that she doesn’t want to be in a relationship as yet.
“Hindi pa talaga ako handa eh. Sayang naman ’yung oras. Ayoko ring magaksaya ng oras ng ibang tao,” she stated.
Prior, Jennylyn was rumored to have been canoodling with ex-boyfriend Dennis Trillo. She was also rumored as supposedly romancing her “English Only, Please” co-star Derek Ramsay.
She made clear, “Friends naman kami ni Dennis Trillo. Diyos ko, ang tagal na nu’n (relasyon namin). Ang tagal na, siguro naman dapat kahit papa’no (naka- move on na).”
As to Derek, she related, “Sa totoo po, si Derek, kaibigan ko talaga siya. Kumbaga, nagkaroon ako ng isang kaibigan talaga kay Derek kasi parang nalalapitan mo siya, ’yung talagang nakakausap mo siya, ’yung ganon.”
Successful year
Jennylyn ended 2014 with a bang, receiving her first Best Actress trophy from the 40th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) for her portrayal of a hopeless romantic language tutor in “English Only, Please,” which also earned Best Editing (for Marya Ignacio), Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Director (Dan Villegas), 2nd Best Picture, and Best Actor (Derek Ramsay).
Jennylyn was also recognized as the Female Kontrabida of the Year at the Yahoo! OMG! Awards.
The Kapuso star also finished a TV series as well as release a new album in 2014.
She is set to do another drama, titled “Second Chances,” with Raymart Santiago, Camille Prats and Rafael Rosell in 2015.
Happy holidays
Jennylyn spent part of the holidays with ex-boyfriend Patrick Garcia and his new family.
She took to Instagram to post a picture of them together.
Nikka Martinez, Patrick’s fiancée, shared the same photo and captioned it “Truly the spirit of Christmas!”
Jennylyn has already transferred in her “dream house” in Quezon City. Her new home has seven bedrooms.
“Kumabaga ’yung ilang taon na pagod at puyat din sa trabaho (dun napunta.) Worth it naman,” she said.
The actress also had a three-story building built in Quezon City, which, she said, she will use for several businesses.
“Naisip namin na i-open siya Jan. 15 kasi parang alanganin kung i-o-open namin siya by the end this year,” she said.
