13-year-old newcomer upsets Nora Aunor for CineFilipino Best Actress award

In a stunning upset, a skinny 13-year-old newcomer was named Best Actress at the ongoing CineFilipino Film Festival instead of the heavily favored superstar Nora Aunor.

Teri Malvar’s surprise victory capped a triumphant evening for first-time director Sigrid Andrea Bernardo’s lesbian coming-of-age-film “Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita”, which tied for Best Film and also won Best Supporting Actress for Angel Aquino and Best Acting Ensemble for its cast.

Aunor’s film, “Ang Kwento Ni Mabuti”, shared the Best Film honors and won Best Screenplay and Best Director for veteran indie filmmaker Mes De Guzman.

The story of a faith healer who accidentally found a stash of money, “Mabuti” was also the film festival’s top grosser and will extend its theatrical run for another week after CineFilipino wraps up in September 24.

Four out of the eight feature films in the festival shared the wealth of awards in ceremonies held at the Genting Club of Resorts World Manila Sunday night.

The Jose Ma. Sison biopic of sisters Sari and Kiri Dalena, “The Guerrilla Is A Poet”, also fared well as it won honors for Best Actor for Karl Medina, Best Supporting Actor for Bong Cabrera, Best Musical Score and Best Film Editing.

“Puti”, Mike Alcazaren’s stylish psychological thriller, won most of the technical awards as it took home the trophies for Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

Other entries in the week-long festival are Ato Bautista’s “Mga Alaala ng Tag-Ulan”, Randolph Longjas’ “Ang Turkey Man Ay Pabo Rin,” Ron Bryant’s “Bingoleras” and Janice Perez’s “The Muses”.

There were three winners in the short film derby. First place went to Pamela Ll. Reyes’s “Ligaw” followed by Kimberly M. Ocariza’s “Logaritmo” and “Sangandaan” by Jose Ibarra E. Guballa and Bienvenido Ferrer III.
